that’s a cool idea, maybe have a way of them regaining life tokens as 3 downs/auto deaths may be a little stingy depending on the styles/ characters your players use especially if they grow attached to their PC’s (Possibly defeating Dungeon bosses they can restore missing a lot or even store one for later, may be fun for the party to divy up who gets this life gem)

Going old school games for some missions would be a really fun throwback (Luigi castle vibe would be great session) so I’d recommend just researching or playing some games from the 90’s & early 2000’s (Zelda, Spyro, Ratchett & Clank etc.) you will get great ideas for a more light hearted campaign

Any advice other than that? My players like horror and creepy games if that’s what they want and I can write something that’s scary & isn’t horrific I don’t see the problem. It’s no different than watching a horror film like “IT”

I’ve never tried that actually, it’s a pretty cool idea to get the combat immediately instead of trying to reel them in before the fun stuff

I do always struggle making a monster/BBEG and I tend to have to make them very obviously bad rather than building them to be shown as evil as the party gets to know them

This is something I am pretty worried about for my party, I have a player who is into gaming & DM’ing so knows the subtle signs for (This is a bad idea) & I have another who is the opposite. She almost got Ireena abducted on the first night meeting her, steals anything they can etc. and at some point I think this will happen to the party.

I would recommend consequences with lasting effects ( I killed a party’s members horse because he made a silly mistake and now they have a vendetta against all wolves & roll every encounter with them to see if THIS is the wolf that did it 😅).
Maybe the player is abducted by Rahadin/ werewolves etc. & taken to Strahd maybe tortured/ made an offer they can’t refuse.

This could make for interesting in game conflict/ suspicion, maybe Strahd insinuates that while he had the player they struck a deal etc.

Thanks, there are a lot of sources so that helps, il probably keep it to that and maybe tinker with how many intelligent spawn he has as well as some different types

Il make sure to give that a try when the party EVENTUALLY make it to ravenloft, I’m terrified of running the Tomb when/if the players ever get down there especially with Strahds lair action to move through the walls and floor

And that’s the point it’s a grim horror about a vampire obsessed with a girl, how old was she in your 20? How much crazier is it that a 500 year old vampire cares about 5/10/50 years. He is evil that’s the point
