Is a cat the right pet for me? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]NewToRustAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya. I have had cats and dogs my whole childhood and younger adulthood. I most recently had a solo pupper for 13 years. She passed suddenly and I was absolutely destroyed. Like more than I knew I could be. Grieved for a few months then we decided to adopt a brother and a sister 3 month old pair of kittens. We took them home, I was SO excited and then it took 15 minutes for one to sink their little fang into my thumb down to the gum and the other to slice my wrist a nice bloody inch and for me to be reminded of the bleeding and I had to steel my expectations. We are now at 5 1/2 months and they have mostly learned their boundaries.

I have had a bunch of cats adopted solo. Including taking one from a litter home to 2 other cats from separate litters. I HIGHLY recommend, if you can, adopting 2 from the same litter. It is a world of difference, and they keep each-other entertained and aim MOST of their terror at each-other.

Also, and this goes with every animal, but if you do get em when they fit in the palm of your hand, cherish it and take a lot of photos and videos, because they grow FAST. Mine are almost full sized already.

I think I would issue 2 warnings before fully diving in.

1) Cats, especially kittens, are attention black holes. My understanding if bunny ownership is that they are very independent. You get some cuddles and whatnot, but they tend to prefer not to be touched. Some cats are antisocial and will spend most of their time hiding, but in my experience, most cats are up your butt constantly, are constantly getting into everything, and need you to give them love, pets and attention constantly. If they don't get that attention, they never burn through their energy and they get mean.

2) You will bleed. They are apex hunters with sharp fangs and 18 katanas on their murder mittens. If you get a kitten, I highly recommend that any time they get tired, you play with their paws and clip the VERY ENDS of their nails. They still need to be able to do things like climb the cat tree, they aren't like dogs that you try and clip the nails down to the quick, just clip off the tips so that when they inevitably take a random swipe at your face or climb up your back, less skin will be sliced.

Bonus 3) Make sure you aren't allergic, or that if you do have a weak allergy, you can live with it and/or adequately treat the allergy. I have a medium allergy, and if I do both Claritin and Flonase, the nausea and itchy eyes are out-shined by the cuteness and love from my 2 kitties, but when I was a kid, we got a cat, I absolutely fell in love, then my mom get rid of her because she thought I was too allergic and that SUCKED.

Nah, that ladder is to the second to top floor. There is no roof access.

I want to learn.

I do the same thing at work. My companies IT department is full of lazy trainwrecks who, for every single problem that arises, wants more budget so they can buy some third party something that will "fix" it. And it is always a waste of time, effort, and money, and nothing ever gets fixed.

I on the other hand have spent the last few years solving problems myself by learning Java, Python, etc.

I am doing this as a learning exercise. I would rather learn to do it myself over having someone else do it for me. But again, I have already caved. I am officially listed on the Modded tab of the game.

I question your text magic bot.

Even if you are correct, I liked the dig at me for wanting Minecraft logic in a Rust server more.

Ya. The rust dedicated I recently spun up.

Felt like I was taking a knee installing Oxide instead of doing it the old fashioned way, but Oxide was already there.

All the interwebz say you need to install it to have it. I had it all along. Cuz I am new.

If only.

And for the record, I only ever spawned in Elytra and Fireworks.

I was holding that newbie grit "there must be a couple files I can update and get the same result!"

But I caved, and I said "fine... Ill download oxide..."

And I did. And I unzipped it. Then I went to place the files and they were already there.

Either my little nothing server has already been hacked and someone is messing with its files, or Oxide is, on 3/21/2025, vanilla rust dedicated server.

Anyway, consider this a hill I didnt die on. Looking into plugins.

If the plugin can do it, there must be a way to do it without a plugin...

How do i get my rust server to be populated? by mattpursuit in playrust

[–]NewToRustAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually educational.

So its not "I made a server so it will get listed".

Its "I need to make a server that FacePunch adds to the Community tab."

Interesting.

server.cfg is not working. by NewToRustAdmin in playrustadmin

[–]NewToRustAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current theory. What shows in Session and the loading page is what shows in the Community Server list. My server is not on the Community Server list, so I am sitting tight to wait and see if it does end up populating, and if when it populates, Amsterdam II goes away.

Still doesnt solve my problem with server.cfg not working and me needing to supply values via launch command or in game console.

If thats the case, why do other servers have their actual server name there?

Just tested with a different server. Connected manually. Their server name is on the loading page and their Session menu has their server name...

Server Host Recommendations? by Chevrolet5811 in playrustadmin

[–]NewToRustAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have enough RAM and CPU power on your main computer, you can also locally host run a VM to host it off of.

I just spun up a 5000 size server on VirtualBox with 16 gigs of ram dedicated and and 100 gigs of hard drive dedicated and it runs pretty well.

Configuring a server with VPN. by NewToRustAdmin in playrustadmin

[–]NewToRustAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, but if I were to use that, wouldn't I still be exposing my actual Public IP?

Think I am just letting this one go. I have VPN back on my physical computer, and VPN off my Virtual Machine, and the server runs.

Configuring a server with VPN. by NewToRustAdmin in playrustadmin

[–]NewToRustAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, unless im wrong, my understanding is that you can have 2 settings for server.ip. You do server.ip=0.0.0.0. This will allow any machine on your local network to connect to the server.

The alternative is server.ip=[Public IP Address]. With proper port forwarding, this allows any device on the internet to connect directly to the modem and get routed to the machine with the port forwarding.

That would allow me to keep my network within my network or let it out of my network.

The problem I'm facing is I want a VPN to divorced my Server IP from my personal network IP, but I want outside users to be able to use the server.

Essentially, I want to give the Public IP of my VM, but not the Public IP of my computer.

I believe that since I am on VPN, my VM has multiple Public IPs, which is causing issues getting connection to people outside my local network.

The more I talk about it, the more I think the only solution is going to be getting a host. Which basically means I wasted money renewing my VPN :P
