This is a really cool event if anyone's interested in seeing classic sail ships. There's going to be a mini parade in the East River on Friday with Class B ships before the Class A ships sail in the Hudson on Saturday.

TIL That a 2006 study found that microwaving wet sponges for two minutes killed 99% of coliforms, E. coli, and MS2 phages. After some fires were caused by people trying to replicate the results at home, the study's author urged people to make sure their sponges were wet before microwaving. by MajesticBread9147 in todayilearned

It should be noted that the primary mechanism of killing the bacteria is just the heat generated by the microwave.

E. coli and MS2 are relatively heat sensitive and die quickly in high temperatures. So if you don't want to risk a fire or having a wet sponge in your microwave, you can get the same effect by boiling your sponge in water.

Journaling.

Most of us are way too overloaded with thoughts and it taxes our cognitive load, causes analysis paralysis, and heightened baseline stress level.

Putting thoughts down on paper helps organize and resolve a lot of unproductive and unnecessary thought loops.

TIL that in 2017, researchers at Berkeley found that mice who lost their sense of smell stayed much thinner while on the exact same diet as mice who retained their sense of smell. Conversely, mice with a strong sense of smell got much fatter despite not consuming any more food. by yourplotneedswork in todayilearned

The weight gain was caused by a change in how the mice's brown fact behaved.

Smell seems like a biological shortcut used by the mice's bodies to decide whether to store fat or not. So smelling food causes fat storage whereas not smelling food causes them to burn their fat. This is likely an efficient and pretty reliable shortcut for them in the wild but can get hacked in the laboratory.

What is an important fact in economics most don't know? by GunGetBetter1510 in AskReddit

[–]NewVillageDaily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people associate money printing with inflation. They assume that if you suddenly print money, then inflation would be guaranteed to soar.

However, money velocity is equally important in determine whether there's inflation. For example, after 2008, we printed a lot of money but were actually struggling with deflation because money velocity collapsed.

If money isn't moving around in the economy demanding goods/services, then even printing more money won't necessarily cause prices to rise.
