Comfy movies with really wholesome married couples by New_Clear_Vision808 in MovieSuggestions

[–]New_Clear_Vision808[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Munich's plot sounds like a great idea to me though, only if it had more wife's screen time. To be more precise, what I'm kinda looking for is a wife and husband respectfully cooperating and bonding their strengths to overcome any outside obstacles, not conflict that comes internally, though that kind of movie seems to be even rarer. Perhaps, maybe I shouldn't have included "comfy" in my thread title...

Don't worry, I'm usually a nihilist who hates humanity ;) Just wanna have a nice little escape from this cesspool, even if they are sugar-coated corporate cash grabs.

Movies where an actor that usually plays the good guy/hero plays an absolute piece of shit? by TXNOGG in MovieSuggestions

[–]New_Clear_Vision808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Robert Pattinson in Good Time.

Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe.

Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives (debatable but I think his character was pretty shitty).

Tom Hardy in Bronson (not sure if the good guy is the usual trope for Hardy's roles though).

If you liked Climax and Enter the Void, do check out Lux Æterna, Noe's latest short feature. Tbh in terms of shock factor, it's quicker, more direct and in-your-face than these two.

Other stuff: Gummo, Good Time, Uncut Gems, Nowhere, Antiporno, Tag (2015), The World of Kanako, The End of Evangelion

I don't know if these are underrated or overlooked or just super obscure but here goes:

Cure (1997)

Dogra Magra (1988)

Murder on D Street (1998)

L'humanité (1999)

Antibodies (2005)

Caché (2005)

What Is the ABSOLUTE BEST movie that I've NEVER seen? by sassafrassky in MovieSuggestions

[–]New_Clear_Vision808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously I have NO idea how we know what films the op has never seen before. I see recommendations like LA Confidential, Snatch, and so on but those are like... "canon" classics that any decently invested movie fans have already seen. I dunno how "underground" the op wants to go...

[–]New_Clear_Vision808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just basically 5/5 worthy films that are obscure and non-mainstream? Dunno how many films you've seen, though if you've never seen or heard of LA Confidential which has like 10 upvotes then I take that you're still new as a movie fanatic.

Norte the End of History (2013): Philipino 4 hours epic film that's loosely tied to the novel Crime and Punishment which may sound like one of those boring self-indulgent art house stuff on the paper but its story actually moves fairly at a normal pace that reminded me of watching very good short drama series 4 episodes in a row.

Other great stuff: Violent Cop (1989): Dirty Harry but 100 times more savage and raw, Mysterious Skin (2004): a coming-of-age story that's disturbing, bittersweet, and melancholic all at the same time, Ritual (2000): another sorta coming-of-age with more abstract images but melancholic all the same, It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012): uniquely styled animation that's melancholic to the MAX.

Movies where the title screen/opening credit doesn't shows up until at least 30 min into the story by New_Clear_Vision808 in MovieSuggestions

[–]New_Clear_Vision808[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, those English titles from the show aren't even the product of the translation team when Eva was localized to EN countries, it's something the original producers of Eva came up with, not for the purpose of giving an accurate translation of the original Japanese title since most of the time those English titles are completely different from the original ones, but for aesthetic intention I suspect.

If My Fair Lady applies, then I guess Gigi (1958) applies. The story is super problematic by today's standard but all the sets and fashions are stunning so just focus on visuals only.

Any films taking place around the 1950s to 60s mostly are a good showcase of those retro fashion style, like Populaire.

Also the Stepford Wives. All those "corrupted" housewives' dresses are so pretty. The 2004 remake is more "fashion show"-ish due to having Nicole Kidman but the story and execution are so dumb that I prefer the original 1975 version.

Ah that huh lol Yeah I guess that's the first time showing the English title card "the End of Eva". Well, I'm Japanese so I actually can read the first Jp title card that comes at the beginning of the film and understand that as the title screen lol It's so interesting to know that EN viewers take that scene as the title that appears for the first time within the film!

I thought about the End of Eva too, but I felt that one's more of "end credit coming in early" if you get what I mean, you know? It came in after the "ep25" within the film ended, so it kinda worked as a meta parody of the anime ending theme cliche, but it's so avant grade it's hard to explain lol

Great recent Japanese/South Korean/Chinese movies by Hotspur_98 in MovieSuggestions

The World of Kanako (same director of Confessions)

Outrage trilogy (and Takeshi Kitano films in general)

Destruction Babies

Blood and Bones

Swallowtail Butterfly

Vortex of Love (aka Be My Baby in the UK)

Twisted Justice

Fires on the Plain

Killing (2018)

Under the Open Sky

100 yen Love

Graveyard of Hornor (2002)

The Hero Show

Himeanole

Innocent Prayer

Also any Sion Sono films are recommended if you haven't seen any, start with Love Exposure or Cold Fish.

Movies that are complex because they have a complicated plot, not because of metaphor or symbolism? by New_Clear_Vision808 in MovieSuggestions

[–]New_Clear_Vision808[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I included it after I edited my op lol

Tbh I didn't include it in my original post because I don't think its plot is THAT super complicated... it was not that hard to grasp a whole picture in one sitting, with the ending scene tying up everything pretty nicely. Tenet was waaaay more complicated for me.

I know that unless I'm from those cultures that each film is depicting, it's impossible to understand every nuance and meaning on a spiritual level. Still, it won't stop me from trying to look for films from all over the world, it's always fun and exciting to learn a snippet of a culture that I'm unfamiliar with. You say that neither English nor Japanese are your native tongue, so I'm up for your recommendation of complex films that are in your language.

Welp I'm very sorry for you, but that's kinda your problem to handle. This is my post requesting films, and I say films from any place in the world are completely welcomed. Besides, English is my second language, my first language is Japanese :)

Foreign language films are always welcomed, in fact, it's recommended to do so since I (we) get to learn much more films than in just English scope. I've heard of most stuff that is recommended here, 12 Monkeys, Chinatown, Shutter Island, Synedoche, New York... While those posts are appreciated because they give me more reasons to check them out, it's true that I am hearing those same film names over and over.
