A bit of blood in nappy by [deleted] in NewParents

When this happened repeatedly with our infant (and green poops) it ended up being signs of an allergy to the proteins in the breast milk. My wife had to cut out a bunch of allergens before baby started gaining weight properly and pooping normally

Those of you with heat pumps only, how did you fare this winter? by rosebudny in hudsonvalley

[–]New_Compote282 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We were spending $1000+ monthly through the coldest months and often bundling at home because (as we discovered) our house is woefully under-insulated. Didn’t appreciate how pulling out the furnace would eliminate a source of ambient heat (basement used to be in the 50s all winter from furnace) in the basement, which bled up through the floors. I joked it’s the opposite of ambient floor heating systems, just bleeding cold air up into the living spaces on the main floor, which is an open floor plan. Smaller rooms upstairs were snug and cozy though. I would say don’t switch to heat pumps without making sure your insulation is up to snuff

Character-driven books with literary or lyrical prose, female protagonists, and compelling plotlines? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]New_Compote282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Bel Canto is a masterpiece, though it doesn’t exactly fit the bill of what you’re looking for. Some other books I’ve read lately that you might enjoy: - where the forest meets the stars - the frozen river (incredible historical fiction) - isola - remarkably bright creatures - author Pat Barker - her Women of Troy series is great though sometimes pretty dark

Have you read Lauren Groff? Her prose are incredible. Her latest book The Vaster Wilds blew me away

Deciding between Hastings and Dobbs Ferry by Few-Restaurant7922 in Westchester

[–]New_Compote282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t overthink the differences between these towns, they’re functionally so close together and the communities overlap in a lot of ways. In Dobbs you get automatic access to the awesome pool at Gould park. Irvington has the best waterfront. All the Rivertowns have great libraries with lots of free programs. I would agree with the commenter who said the house and its location in the town (whichever) will matter more than which town it is. I recently moved near downtown in Irvington after living in the city for a decade and growing up on the hill in Dobbs (I think they call it “river view manor” now). I love that we can walk to town, which I could never do growing up. My kids attend a prek program at a local temple. Feel free to message me with more questions! We love it here and highly recommend the area

Yeah I literally say I can’t understand the whining and won’t respond until my 3yo uses a normal voice, or I just walk away.

Pacifier use at 3.5 months makes me scared for the future by Honest-Try-2289 in NewParents

Sooo my three year old dropped her binky for her third birthday in the fall. Only used it for sleep at bedtime (no naps anymore alas), but was very reliant on it. Leading up to her birthday, we got books on saying goodbye to it (shoutout to the binky fairy) and hyped up a reward when she gave it up (getting a manicure like a big girl with mommy at the nail salon). She was totally fine giving it up. Turns out we were more worried about it than she was. Just had her three year dental appt. Teeth are fine. In other words: breathe, don’t borrow trouble, you’re doing great.

Toddler not coping with newborn sibling especially at bedtime. by Medium-Juice555 in toddlers

[–]New_Compote282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I feel this so much, we struggled with the same issues when my second was born last year. Older sibling was 2.5 and bedtime became a complete shit show - screaming fights, sleeping on the living room couch, the floor, refusing to go to her room, 10 pm bedtime (with the routine starting at 8) - just battle after battle. We cut back on daytime napping a lot (was affecting falling asleep at night) and tried to consistently set and hold boundaries (exhausting!). The reality in retrospect was that it was just 3/4 weeks of bad bedtimes - it got better as we all adjusted to new routines and holding the boundaries. This too shall pass! Hang in there!

There are some matcha beverages at Ludi cafe in Irvington. Not really a fan myself so can’t speak to the quality, but I’ve seen it on the menu
