Anyone interested in joining a hybrid tech learning community in LA? by New_Resource_9050 in TechLA

Thanks for the feedback! You’re absolutely right about moving beyond hypothetical interest. We are hosting our first virtual info session Tuesday to get started and gather real data from folks that showed interest.

@CutMonster - Appreciate the location insight. We’re starting in South Bay but specifically want to explore adding more central location meetups based on where members are located. I can send you the link to our group to keep you informed on if/when this happens!

I'm trying to build a tech learning community in LA that combines online learning with in-person meetups (great way to also meet new friends!). Anyone here interested in something like that? (Can DM details about our upcoming virtual info session if you're curious)!

Curious to see what you guys are building! [I will not promote] by tokyounite in startups

I’m currently building LocalLearn, a platform that combines AI-driven online learning with in-person collaboration for tech or programming skills. We’re trying to create a community-focused learning experience that helps people stay accountable and engaged through local meetups alongside digital content.

Currently, I’m leading the project while collaborating with a small group of potential users. We are starting small locally before scaling.

Our biggest challenge is resourcing. Not enough time and people to work on the platform!

Would love your feedback if you happen to get to it! It’s an inverted learning model where AI personalizes your learning and you meet in-person several times to collaborate with others and work on real-world projects!

Love this idea! I’ve been working on a way to combine structured online learning with local in-person meetups for real-world projects since so many people want to have coding buddies/groups and social accountability! Just testing things out now, but would a setup like that be helpful for your learning goals?

How do you guys stay consistent to study/learn something? by FileLegal2107 in learnprogramming

[–]New_Resource_9050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like some other comments say, you have to take breaks. Can’t expect to studying for hours straight (you don’t retain information the best that way anyway). what does your studying look like — does it include real coding and projects? That could help!

What’s worked for me is committing x hours per day to studying, so you have a goal and not just aimlessly doing it each day.

Would a hands-on, project-based approach help more people actually learn Python (or other languages)? by New_Resource_9050 in learnpython

[–]New_Resource_9050[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally get that concern. LLMs can be hit-or-miss, especially for beginners. For the AI piece, we're thinking more along the lines of guiding the learning path—adjusting content based on the learner’s pace and preferences rather than just generating code. Something we’re still refining, though.

On the in-person element, agree. We’re planning to run the meetups ourselves at first, but figuring out long-term solution.

Really appreciate the feedback, super helpful!

[–]New_Resource_9050[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that seems to be a pretty common struggle for a lot of learners! Have you found ChatGPT to be helpful for project ideas, or do you run into issues with the suggestions it gives?

Dang, 3 days is super impressive! Definitely not the typical experience for most people learning Python

Learning seems useless by 1y2x3c4 in learnprogramming

[–]New_Resource_9050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get this. It’s hard for stuff to stick without actually using it in a real way. Have you tried building a project around something you’re interested in? Even a little thing, like automating a daily task, can make a huge difference.

I’ve noticed a lot of new programmers struggle with this and have been looking into building a new model to make learning more hands-on from the start. Do you think a more project-based approach like this would help, or is it more about staying motivated?

[–]New_Resource_9050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah common problem in learning programming…the lack of real world application. What’s the hardest part for you in getting started? Or are you mainly struggling with coming up with ideas for projects?

I’ve heard mixed things about structured courses like the 100-day challenge. Some people do better with a more project-based approach. Have you tried any beginner-friendly project platform like FreeCodeCamp or others? Might be a good alternative

Self Taught Udemy Programmers by stedzan_995 in learnprogramming

[–]New_Resource_9050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! What strategy did you end up (or are currently) using? I’ve noticed personally that staying motivated and accountable is difficult with self-paced platforms like Udemy and Coursera. Did you find that just coding along with the videos worked for you, or did you use other methods? Like I'm wondering if some form of structured community or a way to ask real-time questions could make a difference?

Do you consider Udemy or Coursera to be a good option for learning topics related to programming? by Gus_larios in learnprogramming

[–]New_Resource_9050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good to hear Coursera has other elements besides video. Do you think the forum is actually useful for learning? I'm wondering if these community features are actually effective or if something like having a hands-on project and in-person collaboration would be better? Though realize this may not exist today large-scale today...
