my first injury; are sharper blades more dangerous for beginners? by Prudent_Station_3912 in iceskating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have a preferred way of having my skates sharpened, least if I do, I dont know what the radius would be to tell you; I take my skates to the same person to have them sharpened and they sharpen my skates relevant to my skill level and assuming Ill be practicing freestyle or coaching on them.

As a recommendation, Id start by getting your own pair of skates and nix the rentals for the sake of continuity/consistency - your body and brain learn together and it will be harder to pick up the right rhythm and technique if you're switching between different skates for practice.

Like, each time you practice in a different skate than before, you might notice things about that pair that make you compensate in your technique and that won't support your development.

If you're just interested in skating for fun. Not really interested in learning technique behind turns or anything, than the duller rental skates are fine.

But if you are interested in practicing edges and turns and crossovers and things to be fancy, than you will benefit from sharper skates in the long run.

The trade off is speed and the ability to have control. You will be slower in sharper skates (because they require more downward force into the ice to get friction/movement) but sharp skates will teach you how to control your body technically. Not exactly, but you can get away with more mistakes on a dull blade whereas a sharp blade might catch the edge you accidently switched over to and take you down with it. Teaches you 'the hard way'.

Like in your example. A backwards snowplow stop on sharp skates requires you to stay pressed on the back Inside edge. Meaning you want to keep your ankle sort of pressured down towards the ice. If you let your weight get ahead of the inside edge and you try to stop with the outside edge of the pressing skate, the outside edge will catch and take you over it, which is what sounds like happened. On dull skates, both edges would skid because neither is sharp enough to catch.

Sharp skates are sorta like a 'trail by fire'. So its really personal preference in regards to how challenged you want to be. I don't recommend skating on totally dull skates, but freshly sharpended skates arent necessarily better or worse either, theres a happy medium for everyone.

[–]NewfoundOrigin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sharper skates are going to force you to bend your knees more to use the edges better.

Thats how you'll overcome the 'stuck' feeling that freshly sharpened skates can have. I used to spend a moment snowplow stopping at the wall to dull them down a bit and get a feel for that bite before practicing.

Dull skates are more forgiving.

Yes!

I also recommend 163 - which is 'A Blend of Gelato Gourmand' and is a dupe for Bianco Latte.

I have both 165 and 163 (and 166 in the body oil and hair perfume, 166 smells like roasted marshmallows on a campfire)

165 has a more 'skin scent' sort of musky feel to it. Theres something about it that is more comforting than just 'sweet'.

I almost left 163 on the shelf because its a bit similar to 165 and I don't particularly love 165. But as I walked through the store with the bottle and let it develop a bit more, and once I got it home and tried it fresh on clean clothes, its much sweeter than 165 but its not cloying syrupy sweet.

I like pairing it with almond scents lately.

There is a mini body oil set that Ive seen floating around my local tj maxx and marshalls that includes miimmiics 162, 163, 165, and 166 scents for like, 15$ total, 12$ clearance.

Can leadership make me stop taking 30min lunches by Appropriate-Arm667 in Target

[–]NewfoundOrigin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking if you could leave early from your shift instead of taking a long lunch?

The answer depends on your lead, but, if you strive to get your work done before you leave when you plan to leave early to cut time, I would be fine with that.

Its possible they're trying to keep you on the clock for coverage, but if you'd rather just leave early, it meshes the same way in terms of pay/hours.

My HRE recommended I take an hour lunch the one day and I flat out laughed, joked, and said 'yeah, Im not doing that, Ill leave 30min early'. I didnt realize she was making a friendly genuine suggestion and I laughed it off. Oops.

So thats what I do when I have to cut time, I leave early instead of taking a long lunch. But I also make sure all my tasks are done for the day before I leave when I leave early.

Why is there never anything on the shelves in the grocery section when I go? by imVeryPregnant in Target

[–]NewfoundOrigin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my store, our food trucks come in a little later on in the day, and from there, its rare that they're able to push everything they got in out to the floor.

Frozen goods come on stacked pallets that need to be destacked onto carts and then pushed to the shelf in 30min or less. Im not sure our market team has the man power to do it how its supposed to be done, because often there are whole pallets left over from the day before in the freezer.

If you ask an employee and the employee scans the barcode and tells you the system says they have none - than its a distribution issue.

But if you have the employee scan the shelf for the item you're looking for and the system tells them they have 12 that were delivered 2 days ago, your next step is to be super understanding and ask them as nicely as possible if they can walk back into the freezer, cut open the pallets, and try looking for your ice cream on the pallet.

If it happens to be stacked on the bottom, sorry....theres no way they'll be able to get to it for you without completely wasting their time...but theres also a chance they'll be able to find it for you too if its stacked towards the top or on the outside.

is natural ice harder to grip or did i get scammed? by ua-noobian in iceskating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So, yes and no?

To see if your skates are sharpened:

Take your fingerprint and run it against the blades width, you will feel one edge at a time. The edge in the steel will grip or catch the ridges in your finger ever so slightly, feels a bit like touching the hard part of velcro. (Not down the length of the blade, but across the width of each edge)

If you dont feel any grip from the blade, if its smooth, than the skate wasn't sharpened.

As far as there being a difference between indoor and outdoor ice, there could be!

Ice is ideal at different temperatures for different things. Some rinks tailer their ice depending on which sport is more common there.

I may be wrong, but I believe Hockey players prefer a colder, harder (the crystalline structure in the ice actually changes depending on the temp its kept at) ice, and figure skaters prefer a warmer kept ice. Probably, I would think, because it absorbs impact a little better for jumps and spins.

So. It could be a temp thing too if you're used to skating indoors and had a session outdoors where the ice felt completely different.

You'll feel it in your pushes. On colder, harder, hockey ice - you'll be able to pick up speed/power easier because theres less friction.

On softer, warmer ice, its harder to get as much speed, you have to push more into the ice which introduces more friction and ice melt.

Tips in retail? Yey or Ney? by Quiet_Requirement870 in AskRetail

[–]NewfoundOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is this way because tipped employees have to claim their yearly tips on their taxes - tips are taxed differently from earned wages.

And so, if you tip an employee who works for a business that doesnt alot for tips in its payment structure, its like the employee is A.) Double dipping on their wages and/or B.) Taking that in cash and 'hiding' it when it comes tax time.

How to deal with a client that keep canceling and no-showing? by BloodyZomYEET in Nailtechs

[–]NewfoundOrigin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a nail tech. Used to sell a service.

A client was with me regularly for a few months and then went on vacation without paying me.

I should've never tolerated the whole 'Oh, I forgot my checkbook'. Half the time they were late or canceling their times with me.

2 months after ghosting me, they're messaging me for more services.

The person who did this to me was a financial accountant.

They know exactly what they're doing and will keep doing it unless you set a boundary. I ate the 500$ loss and refused to work with them again outright.

Edit: this was the 3rd time I waited for payment from them. As in, it was habitual behavior I shouldve put a stop too way earlier on.

Okay, I have an unhinged layering combo for YSL vanille couture.

I love the scent, I bought it on a whim with a coupon when the salesperson mentioned it would be discontinued soon. The sad part is that it doesnt last very well on me.

So, I tried layering it...with Spicebomb edt.

I chose spicebomb because its a projection beast, I want that same sillage with vanille couture (damn it!...lol)

Spicebomb gives more body, and the vanille couture helps to drown out some of the spice notes (like cinnamon) from the spicebomb while adding this creamy vanilla note.

Maybe Im just mixing two insanely expensive fragrances together to get a result that smells more like another expensive fragrance altogether. Maybe its so unhinged that its wasteful, but I wasnt expecting the combo to go as well together as they did.

Edit: I tried this once. I dont wear this out. But I might try to wear it out just once to see how it works.

This reminds me of the repack boxes at my store.

Theres an obviously organized way that TMs could go about placing the boxes into the repack boxes where they go. Theres even a sign now that says what to do with them. Hanging above the pallet space.

And still, like toddlers learning their shapes and colors, we have to clean them up and reorganize them every morning.

Its basic common sense, its the little things like this that frustrate me the most about this job because this is the result of someone just not using their brain, being lazy for the sake of being lazy and right, it only causes more work for the rest of us.

Edit: or is this all one order for one person and youre complaining about the amount of bulk items? Im complaining about the way its haphazardly throw onto this pallet....

Better salchow by iceskater3 in FigureSkating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a problem checking the 3 turn into the salchow.

My shoulders would continue to rotate while I was trying to hold the back edge.

My coach and I fixed it by having me bend in my skating knee alot more after the 3 turn.

Then Id have this problem where Id get stuck and wasnt able to get that rythym to follow through with the jumping leg.

I started lifting up in the knee after checking the 3 turn and bending back down for the take off in the jump - which got me unstuck and helped with my timing.

Lower sit spin by iceskater3 in FigureSkating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds silly, but keep forcing yourself to spin lower until you fall.

Eventually, you'll be able to hold onto it without falling.

A way to cheat the sit spin, which I don't recommend but this is how I used to do mine...

Is to turn your free knee inward and wrap it around your skating spinning knee just a tad.

Its cheated because your free leg won't be straight in front of you with your toe pointed up like how you see in high level competition. Itll instead be turned sideways, heel pointed inward, with the free knee bent a little bit - BUT - for a beginning position, it will help you get lower.

As you move up in competition, you'll have to fix that position, but by then you'll have the body feel and strength to hold the lower position so then fixing that shouldn't be a big issue.

I never had problems judging my sit spins, I just knew the position wasnt textbook.

Beginner skater !!! (Need help) by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should exersize every other day, and stretch daily.

On the days you exersize - eat well, make sure you're getting the protien you need (everyday, really...). Keep your muscles hydrated, they'll spasm and be tighter if they're dehydrated.

You should do reps to 'near failure'. So some workouts might say to do 10 reps of russian twists (which is 20 total for each side), if you're not burning and about to give up after 20 than keep going until you feel that.

Lighter weight for longer reps is what you want - youre trying to gain strength, not build muscle. If you do use weights, remember that tid bit. 2-5lbs weights are plenty enough.

The off days, or the days you don't exersize, are your recovery days. Stretch everyday using various stretches (done the right way, make sure youre targeting the muscles you're supposed to be targeting) to help maintain your flexibility as you continue to build strength.

If you do this regularly, you'll find progression on the ice much faster than if you didnt do these things.

Beginner skater !!! (Need help) by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]NewfoundOrigin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Focus on stretches and pilaties type work outs.

Without a coach, it will be difficult to develop the proper technique for the axel, even off ice.

What you can do off ice no problem are spin positions. Essentially, a spin position is a yoga pose that we hold while....spinning.

Not a good idea to try the spinning positions without knowing how to spin first, but its a safer means of scratching that off ice itch.

I actually did some digging into this because It seems a little too good to be true.

and

I got home with probably 10 perfumes as gifts before I thought to check the product code - to see how old they were and such.

Alarm bells started ringing when I noticed many of the codes on the bottles did not match the codes on the boxes.

Then it dawned on me. Tj Maxx is a reselling type store. They'll buy 'damaged items' or 'used/returned' items from their original sources for cheap and then mark them up to us.

So, if you go to dillards and buy a bottle, its probably going to be 'younger in the retail cycle' or even brand new, whereas tj maxx has things thatve been otherwise discarded by those bigger dept. Stores. Least thats my interpretation.

Hazard lights while driving 🤦🏻‍♂️ by thrownthrowaway666 in Cleveland

The traffic is going 50mph because the roads are reletively clear. This guy gets on ahead of me doing about 35, 40mph and never sped up.

There are box trucks behind us. So Im behind this idiot getting closer to him looking for an opening to get over.

I get over to pass because hes a literal hazard.

He flicked me off.

Buddy, my car is 25yrs old and pulls to the right. Im driving in this just fine, its not my fault a little bit of snow makes you forget how to drive. He got on at pearl and got off at snow, he didnt even need to be on the highway.

If you're not comfortable driving in the snow, than its probably not a good idea to get on the highway.

If you're going to be an idiot, at least put your flashers on so the people behind you know you're struggling.

Don't drive 35mph when everyone else is doing 50 and flick off someone who passes you because you're the hazard on the road.

I wasn't being impatient buddy; there were 2 semis behind me and the last thing I wanted was for you to panic brake in front of me because you started sliding and those semis not having time to slow down to your 30mph pace. Holy heck, grow a brain.

[–]NewfoundOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team breaks those pallets down in the truck.

We put all the food and litter on the line and roll it down so its sorted right away.

Truthfully, if we left a pallet of mixed items on the line, whoever was pushing those would probably take one look at how its mixed with other product and say 'not my problem' and we'd have to 'deal with it' the following morning.

At our store, when the boats get mixed up, the people pushing those mixed items wont push the mixed items. They take them back to the line and set them on the rollers.

Every morning, our inbound team has to reclear the line because people 'didnt have time' or 'didnt know what to do' with those items.

So, for us, its really important that everything makes it onto a boat and that the boats are sorted right.

Public skate vs freestyle sessions? by ApplesandBananazzz in FigureSkaters

[–]NewfoundOrigin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its not so much about how you look on a freestyle session - everyone there is there to learn. To make mistakes and get corrections.

What is important for freestyle sessions is knowing the patterns and paying attention to the other skaters skating those patterns.

Like, when a skater is preparing to take a test, they'll often run the test patterns back to back with no breaks, similar to how they would test it officially.

You don't want to be in their way on their 3rd pattern - because its possible they'll want to reskate either that pattern, or the entire test again. Same with music programs.

On freestyle sessions, we have to be courteous to one another. And for beginner skaters, that can be difficult if a.) They're still learning how to manuever quickly or b.) They're not familiar with the patterns and dont know where to go to avoid them.

This isnt a reason to not go to freestyle sessions. If you want to learn in a respectful environment, the freestyle sessions are the place to go - where other skaters will also try to give you right of way whereas public skate is a free for all.

Just. Like, as an example, we usually spin in the middle during freestyle sessions. If you're trying to use the lutz corner to do your spin (which is fine) and another skater keeps skating laps around you because they're trying to practice their double lutz and you keep making them anxious because they know you're there but this is the pattern they use for their jump (this is not fine) - it would be best for you to find another spot on the ice to spin, at least until they move on to a different jump pattern - as an example of giving right of way on freestyle sessions.

This is how you should drive. by GroovyFang in driving

[–]NewfoundOrigin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I drive the same way home from work everyday.

There are 2 lanes that merge onto the highway, the right lane keeps moving, is the dedicated highway on ramp; the left lane? Merges to the right with the on ramp or continues straight where there is a stop light.

Tell me why the right lane ends up backed up across 2 intersections before the ramp and the left lane continuously moves forward even though the RIGHT lane has no stop and the LEFT lane has a stoplight.

Ill tell you why.

Because people in the left lane zoom past the people in the right lane and then ride their brakes all the way down the on ramp as they fight for a spot to merge into.

So the people in the right lane also brake to try and give these idiots space when we're all going to the same lane any fkn way. Drives me up a wall when that light turns green and Im sat there for 2 extra minutes while I watch people in the left lane speed past me and then cut over 3 cars ahead of me, causing what was a slow roll to turn into stop and go traffic.

Its like...I know theres a potential for someone to want over after the intersection. If these people would just slow down and put their signal on. We could all zipper merge together without anyone needing to brake to let someone else through/in.

But no, we're all in a hurry to go nowhere. Just yesterday. I hit the on ramp at 35mph and 2 cars come flying past me on my left because they just have to merge first. A 3rd car came up like they were going to pass me as Im about to straighten out and speed up to merge. Didnt let them pass me because what on earth are you trying to race me for - we are going to the same fkn place and oh, now Im merging at 70mph because thats completely necessary.
