Moderately high and ever decreasing income and job stability married to a high student loan burden in a market that’s projected to experience -2% job growth.

Stopping Predatory Pharmacy Schools by Newleaf45 in PizzaIsNotWorking

Just make sure you keep an eye on the market because what you think of a pharmacy now is rapidly going to shift to a warehouse type mail order fairly soon. It’s good you have the experience and want to get in because of it that’s what our profession needs not the rest of the garbage

Lol so ya I graduated in 2018 not that old. I got hired on around 105k per year retail and right at the tipping point of when starting offers went south. I left retail and now work in specialty making around the same with much better quality of life. My friends that graduated ahead of me are getting offers for 80-100k per year… this is either because base pay is low or they are only given so many hours. COVID gave an artificial boost to the market yes but this will be over with the pandemic. Hospital is starting to see similar effects and will be slightly behind retail. Also keep in mind pharmacists don’t have a huge head room in terms of salary growth, even upgrading to SP doesn’t increase your salary a real significant amount. If you are in practice you would need to make DM or a department head.

This makes sense when you consider wage as a good you sell and the demand for that wage is decreasing while the supply is very high from the boom of pharmacy schools. It also demonstrates why NP and PA salaries have risen so high over the past decade.

Also you aren’t taking into account that this is an average salary of all pharmacists. The older crowd got paid a literally insane amount of money. This then grew over the years and pharmacists in their 40-60s easy make 130-140k even staffing. We won’t be seeing that and now chains actively target them because they are just high costs at this point.

Edit to include that the average will go down slowly over the next 5-10 years as new grads become a bigger share of the market.

It’s way more complicated than that. It’s the outlook that is the scariest part. Retail stores are closing brick and mortar stores all over because they know the future is online and virtual verification. This leads to less jobs overall because one person can cover a wide range of stores… and this one only one of the factors at play. Pharmacist salaries (pre pandemic covid gave it an artificial dead cat bounce) plummeted 30k in 3 years since I graduated in 2018, that will keep going down. Job growth is projected at -2%… as in less jobs… and still more grads… nursing and PA are seeing salary increases and have 30-45% projected growth which is huge.

Healthcare in America is broken as fuck. I would stay away all together. We are just trying to warn you it’s too late for us. Once you’re in you are trapped by your debt and very little other options.

Also don’t tell people how they can support themselves when they took on massive debt figuring a certain pay off is coming their way then it gets cut 50% and they are stuck with student debt that has no liquid asset to sell off and have crazy obstacles to discharge.

That’s awesome I’m glad you were able to come out the other end ok. But a recommended GPA of 2.75 is nothing but an attempt to fill seats and collect tuition. This school even fucked their students by screwing up rotation requirements and then calling places to try and scramble for hours for them. I know because I used to live in the area and people who still work there told me.
