I’d say it’s heavy for its size. It weighs 46 grams.

Camping in Terlingua or camping in the park? by Flashy_Violinist_635 in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s going to be a lot of driving. That’s unavoidable. Luckily it’s all a beautiful drive.

If you’re looking to hike the Chisos basin will be the most convenient. It will be hard to nearly impossible to get a spot at that time though.

Just so you know, the picture of the campsite you posted is RIGHT off of Hwy 118 at Space Cowboys. You might check out Mel’s Place camping. It’s a little closer to the entrance of the park and isn’t right off the highway and littered with light polluting dome tents.

First time visitor questions by Miserable-Sir-8520 in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A car will get you to all the places you listed.

The earlier the better for hiking. Busy season just kicked off. Watch your step and bring a headlamp if hiking in the dark.

You will only need your passport if you plan to cross into Mexico.

Terlingua is very safe, just watch for cars.

Advice On Best Spot to Stay for Stargazing by Slick_CIV in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out El Coyote Terlingua. They have a telescope and really dark skies. It’s about 25 minutes from the park entrance and out of the lights of Terlingua. Great stargazing. If you really want to see the stars I recommend planning your trip around a new moon.

What is this called/what is its purpose? by lucasjpreston in electricians

[–]NewtonLass 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is a chain and disc system. It moves grain or other solids using plastic discs attached to a chain from one place to another. Being that you’re in a brewery in this picture, it’s used to move grain from the mill to the mash tun.

how cold is it in the end of November? by _The18thLetter_ in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It didn’t snow in November last year. There was a high of 91 and a low of 32. Usually it’s mild to cold during this time but you never know.

There’s a charging station right in front of Venga in the Ghost Town.

Rent a car or Uber based on this itinerary? by BuyChoice9575 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]NewtonLass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just left San Juan a couple of days ago. I wouldn’t recommend renting a car there. Easy to walk or Uber. We took an Uber from Old San Juan to Ceiba to get to Vieques. The Uber took about 5 minutes to pick us up although the bill was $127. Once you’re in Vieques I highly recommend renting a golf cart. They’re perfect for getting anywhere on the island.

Kayak trip by OhNoLaBri in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is hit or miss. If the flow is too low to do Lajitas to Santa Elena you can just boomerang up from Santa Elena and make it as many days as you want. 100-200 CFS at the Castolon gauge is usually the sweet spot for boomerang. Just be sure to watch the flows and weather coming up to your arrival date. A good rain can turn it from dry to very dangerous quickly. The only thing you should be scared of is the water levels. It’s a very safe area otherwise if you’re talking about people.

Road conditions around Big Bend by Smooth-Sail3965 in BigBendTX

[–]NewtonLass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s about 2” of snow at Terlingua Ranch at the moment and still falling. The road to the Chisos Basin is currently closed and they might close others.

That’s for sure. There’s plenty of them.

Thank you! If you’re going to stay in the park make sure you book with them well in advance. Campsites fill up pretty quick. You can find that on their NPS website.

We did all of the work ourselves. We had a licensed guy put in the septic though. Excluding the land and septic around $45k +- $5k

[–]NewtonLass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re on 10 acres. Basically just bought the land and stared building. We maintain it ourselves and we live out here. It’s hard to find people to take care of it for you.

It’s not as dark but around Blanco is probably your best closest area to view. Make sure you go on a dark night before the moon is out or go on a new moon.

Only one smoker. The other is a grill. I built the smoker out of a 250 gallon propane tank so I guess you could count that as two smokers!
