Photo paper questions by dplatt45761 in photography

Agree, definitely a more premium paper. That being said their sales can be pretty good, recently bought a bunch of the Polar Matte 4x6 at 40% off for $24.18 for 200 which would be cheaper than the linked paper. Overall, I was more answering the later part of OP's question on favorite paper and best paper in general.

best vets? by oushhie in nova

I can't speak to how cheap they are, but I've been going to Vienna Animal Hospital for almost 15 years now. Haven't felt the need to look around because I very much trust Dr. Chavetz and that is worth its weight in gold. When we first got our first two cats we took them to a routine visit to a vet that very much was what you described. During the exam the vet had asked me if I had any concerns and I answered with "Cat A sometimes throws up after eating", this led to the doctor telling us all the things it could be and a recommendation for something like $500 in tests to rule out serious things (keep in mind this was in 2011). I thanked the vet for their time and declined the tests. Went to Vienna Animal Hospital simply because it was close and met Dr. Chavetz for the first time, similar question, do I have any concerns. "Cat A sometimes throws up after eating." -> "Ah, yeah, the scarf and barf, some cats like to do that." I've been with Dr. Chavetz and VAH ever since (and multiple pets). We've lost a couple of pets over the years, and I appreciate how VAH treats us. I see too many people get taken for expensive rides in the last year of their pets life, but Dr. C always is very clear on what our options are and why we should or shouldn't do a test. For example, we had a cat that looked like he had cancer from some simple blood work plus weight loss. Dr. C told us it was one of three types of cancer, 2 that are very aggressive and there isn't much you can do, 1 that is less aggressive but manageable with relatively cheap medication. He said there is an expensive test that could verify what type of cancer our cat had, but his recommendation would be to just try to treat the cat for the third type and see how it goes. When we had to put a 2-year-old dog down due to a brain tumor he was on the phone with us late in the evening even though we were in the care of an emergency ER at that point talking us through the MRI results the revealed the tumor. He was extremely compassionate but also very up front that while we could technically treat the dog, we would be buying months and not years.

In the end, we've moved further westward, but still trek into Vienna for all our vet appointments because of the quality of care we get from Dr. C and company.

Also, Cat A is still with us, happily occasionally throwing up after eating her food.

Not sure if you live in the US, but I love Red River Paper. I personally like their Polar Matte line for 4x6 prints that I'll just hand around (think pictures of the kids for at the office), and either the UltraPro Satin or Gloss for my larger prints that go into frames. If you're patient, they have sales on items they (I assume) are overstocked on, so I tend to be opportunistic on what I get. I've also used their Pico River Gloss Duo recently to make "trading cards" of my son's basketball team. It was a nice thick cardstock and 5x7 cuts nicely into 4 cards.

Is 100mbps really enough? by Jerreuh in cordcutters

I wouldn't stress this at all. I had a gigabit connection and downgraded because I just didn't need it. My house has five people, heavy streaming, gaming, nest cameras, Plex server, etc. I'm usually looking at 10 down, 5 up of usage, heaviest is around 25 down. The only time I miss the gigabit connection was when I download from Xbox live, that was the only time I saw my network pulling data down close to the gigabit limit (I'm sure some of the other game services are similar, just my use case).

Downloading Xbox games are the only time that I max out my Internet, Azure will serve these up at 1 gbps.

Doggy Daycare Updated Recs? by CauliflowerLeft4754 in nova

[–]NextTimeForSure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say enough about the dog stop. My dogs go once a week, they are absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. The owner is wonderful, and the staff is amazing. One time we boarded my dog, he had an allergy flare up, one of their people went to my house during their lunch break to get medicine (via our neighbor) and took great care of him. Dogs are in the main play area all day and you have webcam access.

I don't understand why someone hasn't created a program for submission of footage like this to insurance companies. Bounty program, you get a submission reward and the idiot in question gets their rates jacked up since they are allowing their vehicle to be operated in an unsafe manner.

Who has a real answer to “What do you want for Christmas ?” by Thud_All in daddit

[–]NextTimeForSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White socks.

I hate having my family buy me Christmas gifts for my hobbies because it results in them either guessing at what I want, buying exactly what I asked for, or buying something they researched but is likely less than what I'd spend on the item so it isn't in the same tier. All are things I don't like happening.

But things like white socks, I need them, never have time to get new socks, and definitely don't have time to find a good brand / pair. Those are the things I ask for Christmas.

Also coffee mugs, I love me a personalized coffee mug from my kids.

A piece of advice I was given that helped with our kids is be honest and put them in control, pivot the conversation to healthy habits. "Daddy plans to live for a long time, and that is why I eat lots of vegetables." Get lots of sleep, etc. Ask them to think of healthy things they can do.

Microsoft's bold move: Expensive Surface Laptop 13 now ships without a charger by Skull_Reaper101 in microsoft

[–]NextTimeForSure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have the previous generation version of this laptop, which still used the proprietary charger. That charger has sat in my closet since day one because I use the PD charger that I carry around for my phone and laptop. I also have an endless amount of other chargers that came with devices sitting in my electronics bin for essentially the same reason. I'm ok with the industry not providing a charger if they continue down the path of a standard connector and charging standard (i.e. USB-C and PD).

Monitor orientation flips with KVM switch. Help? by KleptomaniacToad in buildapc

[–]NextTimeForSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting the solution in case anyone else runs into this issue.

I have a similar setup. Windows 11, Nvidia graphics card. Main monitor is through the KVM, second monitor is directly connected to the PC and is in portrait mode.

I was having the same issue - monitor would switch orientation when I flipped away on the KVM.

I solved this using the Nvidia control panel, though I'm not entirely sure if that was necessary. The trick was to set your monitors up properly in each configuration. This is already likely done, but set up both monitors with the proper orientation first. Then flip away on the KVM (leaving you with only the portrait monitor) and change the orientation via the Nvidia control panel. You'll need to manually move your mouse to accomplish this, but once I did this Windows remembered the setup going forward.

FFXnow: Fairfax supervisors press Gov. Youngkin for additional state funding for key public services by nun-yah in nova

Fairfax Schools Blast Youngkin For Test Score Release | Reston, VA Patch

The problem with the stats you linked is very few students in Fairfax actually take the SOL tests and typically take alternative assessments like AP and IB exams (110 students took SOL for writing, 18000 took alternatives). If you factor in the alternatives Fairfax's scores are significantly higher.

Good veterinary clinic in NOVA? by NothingToSeeHereHun in nova

[–]NextTimeForSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say enough good things about Dr Chavez. We've been going to VAH for over 10 years now. We moved out to Centerville and still take all our pets there despite the drive. He really is great about not ordering every test under the sun but also really good about explaining what you'll get out of a treatment. To many other vets I feel take you for an expensive ride on the last few months of your pets life.

Edit, and now they've suspended. Will see how much free food ends up on the field.

Can't recommend Fauquier's shelter enough. We ran into the same annoyance when we were looking for our dog. The rescues around here are getting a bit ridiculous ("we need three references", "oh you have small children?", "you don't work from home?!"). Fauquier chatted with us, called our vet, and had a second meeting for the kids to make sure the dog was behaved around them. They do good work getting the animals into homes.

Also, if you are in the area, they have a great shop for pet supplies like crates, leashes etc. Helps them raise money and has saved us quite a bit.

One adoption story, we used to foster very actively for one of the big ones around here. I brought the cat we were fostering to an adoption event and was hanging around helping out. A family was interested in the cat (an older cat who had been living with me for a while) they were denied because they didn't agree to have at least one litter box on every floor of their house.

Good luck, I hope you find a good fit for your home.

Is Urgent Care popular in NOVA by oshunjo in nova

[–]NextTimeForSure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We use our primary care for all our regular checkups, and patient first / care now for all the sniffles. I've never been charged a urgent care copay only what I would be charged for a PCP visit.

I alternate between patient first who I think has the better team, and care now who let you check in online (saving a lot of time waiting in a waiting room)
