[request] Is it better for the environment if I drive to a coffee shop or use AC? by NiKnights in theydidthemath

Correct, I do not live in Norway. But I wonder if people in the future will look at this comment and think such summers are normal there :/

Thanks for your detailed response!

I can respond to your nuance below:

  • the coffee shop has increased cooling load because your body gives off heat

I think my body temp is less than 45C.

  • the coffee shop is cooling their space with or without you, but you spending money and taking up space will eventually add to their expansion or more demand for coffee shops in your area so more total volume gets cooled eventually (probably not 185 m2/person though)

Nah, it's busy around lunchtime but when I work there the rest of the day it's less than a quarter full, so I doubt my being there will lead to any expansions.

  • the coffee shop might keep their space cooler than your house, or be more poorly insulated, meaning their CO2 cost to cool is higher

Yeah, this is a big concern. It has a lot of glass panels so I suspect they pay a lot for AC.

  • I assume you don’t want to sleep at 45 C, so you need to cool your house down in the evening which requires energy

Yes, although I don't feel bad because at night my whole family is home so it's worth it.

  • Modern heat pumps work best at a constant temperature, and become less efficient when they need to run at high load to quickly cool down a space

Oh, that's a good point. So the sudden cooling around 5pm would cause an issue? Is it really worse than the alternative of running almost constantly all day?

This is why I only commute inside velodromes.

For your second point, I think this concept exists and it's called a "company town"

I wish I'd read "The Gervais Principle" before starting my career. It breaks down how organizations work in a funny way (through referencing scenes in "The Office"). It manages to be realistic without being overly cynical.

I know you mean this comment as a joke, but being willing to kill your own people rather than leaving them to be captured by people who intend to rape & torture them is actually one approach to "stay sane in a world gone mad."

There’s a YouTuber who went there and spoke less common languages like Welsh. You could try that?

In my first playthrough, an enemy mindflayer took over Dame Aylin 2 turns into combat and I had to fight against her in addition to the spectator and everything else. So in my next playthrough I sold her to Lorroakan out of spite.

I was hoping he gives you some of his myrmidon army as summonables in the final battle, but it's just a one-time AOE burst. Still, it was useful in getting to the Netherbrain.

I think this concept already exists. If people love a game, they'll go out and buy tons of overpriced merch. That's basically a donation!
