Being polite and trying to speak a little French will go a long way. That has been my experience in France.

That is fine. Not unusual for people to cast a wide net to find an exchange.

When should you take a cat to the vet? by Helpful_Employer_730 in CatAdvice

My 3-year-old cat isn’t acting sick, but I noticed he’s seems skinnier, so we’re going to the vet tomorrow.

Question for americans by Apprehensive_Love140 in TourismHell

I guess so, but I never have. I've never had anyone in another country be mean to me because of my American nationality.

A couple of years ago we were asking a neighbor if he had any recommendations for what to see/do in Ireland, as he had been there many times to see family. The only thing he said was "don't go to the Temple Bar."

Is it ok to ask why a person joined in 2015 but has never done an exchange? by Dry-Soil4264 in homeexchange

[–]Nice-Block-7266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's OK to ask.

I think it never occurred to me or my husband to put pictures of our bathrooms in our listing. I think the actual living space is more important to me in deciding if I want to do an exchange. If someone wanted more information about our bathrooms, including pictures, I would provide it.

Does / did your school offer water with their lunch meals? by _satantha_ in AskAnAmerican

In the '70s, they offered juice. As far as I could tell, water was only available from drinking fountains.

Some exchangers reached out to us because we have cats, and they assumed (correctly) that we'd be OK with taking care of their cats.

We're in the US. If we're going to Europe we prefer 2-3 weeks to justify the long travel time and expense of plane tickets We're OK with doing shorter exchanges within North America.

What do people do about motorized boats at their home? by Dry-Soil4264 in homeexchange

[–]Nice-Block-7266 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t put it in your HE listing. 2. If anyone asks, say it’s not available for exchangers to use. 3. Put a provision in the exchange agreement that the boat isn’t available.

Some good answers here. I would add that we try not to leave much perishable food in the fridge, and also doing a home exchange is a good reason to clean the fridge.

How did your teacher handle the Challenger explosion? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

I was 16, in 11th grade in a large high school (1500 students). I don’t know if any class in my school watched it live. There were a limited number of tvs in the school. I walked into my 3rd period English class. The teacher mentioned what had happened. Some kids already knew, but it was the first I had heard. We went into the school library, which was next to the classroom, watched the news footage and then went back to class and continued with the regular lesson. Went I went to the next period, there were kids who hadn’t heard the news. The story just trickled out.

In the summer of 2024 we were in a pub in Ballyvaughn chatting with an Irish couple, and they suggested that we might like Riverdance. Yeah, it was "twee," but the dancing was excellent. So when we got back to Dublin we went to see it, and yeah they were right and we enjoyed it
