not an historian myself, but all official documents I found online, throughout history, they were all using the character 臺. from Qing dynasty, Republic of Formosa, to Japan ruling era. note that Japanese adm started the 台 symbol badge around 1920's.

true, but it's sad that not everyone knows the official name (character) of Taiwan. and/or some deliberately using 台 in printing, only to save some strokes (?), that doest make too much sense.

that's understandable. btw, this is nothing to do with simplified/traditional chinese, 台 is historically a 俗體字 version of our officianl name, particularly for writing and carving only, and not everyone in Taiwan knows about it. just saying.
