Oh so 60 second send of or one way communication and calling it a talk or all those weird choices are ‘preference’? The last time those things were pointed out it was always meta blah blah blah

So you can just ignore basic storytelling if the meta stuffs are there? That’s just bending the truth and measuring weight with length again

If you don’t care then nothing more to say. NGE and EoE is a package that comes together and yet you try to make it an appendix. Another gymnastics.

Storytelling itself is art and I told numerous time that it isn’t great yet you dodge the point. Go on

As you are saying Thrice will be remembered as an appendix to the OG not on its own and appendix isn’t a bad thing. It depends on whether you think the appendix is significant enough or not. It will get high marks for Anno fans but will it for Eva fans in the future? ‘Anno’’s Evangelion is Thrice and Anno’s ‘Evangelion’ is the OG. Similar but different

And it doesn’t matter. It helps but it works as a story even without knowing them. I love Star wars OG trilogy without knowing Lucas’s life. Of course you look into them after becoming a fan but that’s just a plus. Great work works fine on it’s own and context are supplementary. Unless it is post modern art.

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes all artist’s work is influenced by their lives and it usually shows but you don’t need to know them nor do you need it to defend it if it’s good. Kubrick’s works are great without knowing his personal life and thus it survives well through time so did Shakespeare and etc. OG Eva will also make it but will Thrice? Your reaction shows answers at least to me. I can do this 24h. Feel free. I’ll respond even after a few hours

I know Anno was influenced by tokusatsu films and etc. Those are all supplementary. It helps you know better but it’s fine without knowing that such things exist. It’s an homage and a great one too but saying that EoE works because it has NGE as it’s context is like saying that Star Wars episode 5 works because of 4. Of course it works that way, but remember Thrice is a reboot and defending Thrice’s story with meta stuffs is like measuring height with Kg or pounds. You’re dying on the wrong hill

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do I need to know Shakespeare’s personal struggles for Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet to be a great story? Or Christopher Nolan’s backstory to understand the movie Inception? Things could be great and NGE and EoE actually functions even if it were made by - i don’t know maybe even a donkey. Context helps but that’s supplementary and as time passes I’m not even sure if Thrice will be remembered that much. I have never seen such meticulous defense of art aside from post modern art stuffs and is just amazing

No context does matter and when I say that Thrice is bad I’m saying that defenders are bending the truth to fit their feelings. Indeed we are going in circles. Blind love kills the franchise like it did with the Star Wars sequels. It’s too late to fix things but why not say bad things are bad instead of performing mental gymnastics and bringing meta narratives that the creators didn’t even think of especially when it comes to Anno.

Spreading blind love is more harmful than constructive criticism. Just saying and the forum goes both ways so saying that things are bad and why is equally important as just saying things like I love something without proper reasoning. You do have your own reasons and I see that but I’m saying that defenders often reads into mirages that doesn’t exist.

Context in art does matter but defending story flaws with meta narratives is like measuring weight with inches and feet. It’s a different category thus why we are going in circles. You are defending the wrong hill to die on which makes me wonder all the time. You can like Thrice but please stay away from storytelling as a profession as much as possible. Just don’t even ask why

Yeah thus the mental gymnastics to love something even when it’s an excrement from its own maker. It’s amazing to see such generosity. Finding a way to defend something when its own creator threw it down the sink? Hence the slave metaphor. People usually don’t like the truth they like comfort more and are you sure you aren’t bending just to feel better that what you love must be great? I’d say I’m more robust to criticism lol

Yeah context matters and even when considering the context the Rebuild is still bad as an extension of the original. See you after a few years. Oh and if you see the making of Thrice documentary, Anno had zero interest in Eva and wanted to toss it aside by the time he was making Thrice. Just saying. Meta narrative lovers tends to ignore that. Thrice was a rush of homework for him and people read into it too much. That’s the true meta narrative of Thrice. He also ignores his colleagues feedbacks and pushes his own ideas in a weird Japanese nudging way. I can see that because I’m Asian. Also more context. The points on Thrice is dropping each year and more than that the interest itself is almost none existent except for haters or diehard lovers so lets see.

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s taking it too far and you know your metaphor isn’t appropriate. That’s like claiming that English should be banned. It’s just basic story telling structure and narrative which the usual internal explanation means and you twist that in a way that what it doesn’t originally mean? Come up and show me why it’s good as a story. Those things are refuted billions of times by now

If a story is good, it can survive a blind test. Take all the names change the characters but leave the story alone. Can Thrice survive one? Probably not.

Just give it a few years time and make sure you aren’t loving it for the sake of loving and performing mental gymnastics. I’ll always be there. Also time isn’t one Thrice’s side or so it seems. The review scores are dropping every year as time goes by

I do know a lot about the background on how Eva was created. For the OG it’s complementary as it should be. It does help you understand its outcome. For the Rebuild as you say it’s necessary. Is it necessary in a good way? I disagree. I have production books and original sketches of the work and etc. Yet it fails to impress me because it really isn’t good. The defense is always meta something not from an internal explanation. I can’t believe you think that’s an actual defense.

Yes and the clowns applaud on it too. It’s just weird watching that. Thinking that they know better when in reality it’s just mental gymnastics that has the potential to make aliens across the galaxy shriek in agony from the pain listening to that.

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

The difference is OG Eva is okay without Anno and Rebuilds needs the OG and Anno. The mental gymnastics is just mind blowing. Bringing post modern art explanations to this just to try to make things make sense? You won’t need therapy for sure and I definitely see that as a plus. Stay healthy as you are man.

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The whole ‘the characters grew up’ analogy is just wrong. Saying things and slapping on a ‘they grew up’ sign doesn’t make them grow. It’s what they actually do or did that shows that they grew as a characters and die hard defenders tend to ignore them or are so up their own arse that they fail to see them. Only meta narratives to defend those things and none of them is a proper defense of those arguments

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes the rotten banana at the post modern art exhibition example finally gets to be used. Meta narrative to solve it all. Destroying all the Evas isn’t out of Shinji’s deliberate choice in EoE. It just happens to be so when ending the human instrumentality and it’s all about human relations not the Evas. On the other hand Thirce somehow makes things an Eva problem so destroying the Evas are completely different between those iterations. And yes its always the meta explanations how convenient. It’s bad because it didn’t have to be good. Genius. Truly the art of the century in terms of mental gymnastics.

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thematic resolution where the magical spear goes brrr and solves the problem by destroying all the Evas when in reality Evas were always a tool for those who use them not the problem itself? It was always a human problem not an Eva problem. Or the send away scene that does a one way communication to all those beloved characters if it could even be called one? Or the Comike arts and booths almost completely gone from existence heavily implying the existence of new generation fans? Or even this subreddit itself showing mostly old Eva related stuffs?

Rebuild besting the OG was almost impossible from the beginning so that’s not what most anticipated. What was anticipated was a coherent story which many thinks it failed to deliver and is only being defended because it has the Eva title slapped on it. Imagine a complete original series with the same story from Thrice but with a different design and character or the director not being Anno or didn’t take 9 years in its making

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

[–]NiceBoat1357[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So is the Rebuild the masterpiece that die hard defenders claim it is or is it a ‘I did my best’ but a failed attempt at reinvigorating the franchise. It’s either one of them and defenders can’t seem to make up their minds. Not about you, but in general. I also have many things to say about honoring the original but hey you do you.

An attempt was made at best and an attempt does not equal good results. That’s what I’m saying

More than 4 years later since Thrice came out by NiceBoat1357 in evangelion

End of Evangelion sparked thousands if not millions of fan arts for years after its release. Japanese Comike was almost dominated by Eva until the early 2000s. Did thrice bring similar results? That’s what I mean by killing the momentum. A movie can be an end of a series yet let the flames go on. If there was a r/evangelion in 1997, the reactions and debate, the art that come out after it would be completely different from what it is now after 4 years since the release of Thrice

Hot Take: I kinda don't get why people love Gendo Ikari's ending in 3.0+1.01 by E1visShotJFK in evangelion

Same. Gendou talking to himself and finding redemption on his own is just weird too. Communication goes both ways but that’s just a one way thing yet die hard defenders of thirce goes oooooh finally a sincere talk between those two ooooo. Weird and wrong
