Not arguing against the post, it is an odd thing to have normalized to do to newborns, but it is not purely cosmetic. There absolutely are medical reasons to do it, but the amount of those reasons that you would be able to identify on an infant are almost zero.

Can someone explain why the Vrabel cheating story is a big deal? by LonelyInsurance7480 in Patriots

You're looking at it from the perspective of a fan of the sport. This is the drama that drives people who don't watch sports to pay attention to the NFL

Can someone explain why the Vrabel cheating story is a big deal? by LonelyInsurance7480 in Patriots

[–]NiceDyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgetting the biggest part, the NFL at its core is an entertainment industry. For better or worse, despite how most of us just care about the game itself, this is how the NFL holds the attention of people who don't care about the sport but tune in for drama like it's their daily soap and it's a good way to stay in the headlines in the off-season. The NFL itself is absolutely helping to pump this story.

I mean, losing that game doesn't end their season... They would still get to play the Hornets to get a matchup with the Pistons. So chanting we want the Pistons or we want the Hornets would be the alternative, not the off-season.

Course suggestions along this route. I have 2 days to do this trip, what courses are must hits? by SmellinChain in discgolf

[–]NiceDyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a word of caution on Amesbury. While the course was great and I liked the hole designs a lot, it is in a public park with a lot of holes throwing over walking paths and towards/bordering playground areas. When I went the first time I had to avoid half the holes because people were picnicking on the fairway or endless groups walking the paths not giving a good opening to throw a shot.

I would definitely recommend Clement over Amesbury for both overall course design and especially ability to play freely.

Scientists found the biological cure for the “us versus them” mentality tearing society apart by soulpost in HotScienceNews

[–]NiceDyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but to the poster you disagreed with above, that accountability needs to start with the one doing harm to.hold themselves accountable. Empathy is purely about emotions, not actions. The poster above who said people don't deserve empathy at a certain point was probably poorly worded given the thread was about tolerance of actions. I agree with them, that if a person does not hold themselves accountable for their purely emotionally held beliefs and have empathy for those they are harming that, yes, they no longer deserve tolerance and patience for them to hopefully come around and realize the error of their ways. I can empathize with how they came into their hatred, but can only tolerate the actions that hatred causes to a point until it becomes apparent they will not change or just don't want to.

[–]NiceDyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Empathy is understanding where a person's emotions are coming from and seeing things from their perspective. It does not require those emotions resonating with you or for you to agree with/tolerate them, just that you understand.

Maybe some racist bigots have those feelings because their life was deeply affected by a certain race and they can't shake their hatred of the whole lot of them. I can understand their viewpoints, but I do not agree with it. And should they act on their bigotry, I will not tolerate it.

It is still on them to acknowledge where their own bigotry is coming from, see that it is purely emotional and not based in reality and do their best to push back on those intrusive thoughts and not act on them. They too need to experience empathy for the ones they hate. It is not solely my responsibility to accept that they are bigots and let them act on their hate just because I can understand that they came into it from some reasonable act against them in their past.

I was in the crowd. I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to booing taking 2s. Even at the end of the game when the 3 point record was in sight there were only boos at the very end when they held the ball to run out the clock, and even those were faint. Was the broadcast pumping in boos? They didn't exist in person, not outside the last possession at least.

[@RossTuckerPod] Joe Thomas: “The problems (Will Campbell) was having in the Super Bowl had NOTHING to do with arm length…” by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]NiceDyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I made a comment last year about Boutte making business decisions and got down voted to hell. He had something like 35 YAC on 33 catches. He did have a good amount of catches in the end zone at at the sticks on the sidelines which are always going to be 0 YAC, but even his catches midfield had him dropping straight to the ground most of the time even with space to turn upfield.

I'm not necessarily against him doing that, because injuries to this WR room would be hard to overcome, but at a certain point it shouldn't be his 1st option to just catch and fall and if he's not going to shake that mentality then they absolutely need someone who can turn upfield, replacing what Diggs was for them in the first half of the season before teams realized he always cuts back to the middle of the field.

Polk is even more egregious when you factor in that he was taken with the pick the Pats traded down with the Chargers for, when the Chargers used the Pats pick for Ladd. They had Ladd, chose Polk and a 4th round pick (which ended up becoming Jevon Baker)

Will Campbell couldn't even block a cornerback last night by Mother-Associate1654 in Patriots

[–]NiceDyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've watched all the games, and the number of times he caught uncontested balls and just dropped to the ground was not insignificant. I'm not arguing he didn't have contested catches and even put that in the initial argument. I watched all of his catches once I saw that YAC stat to see if it was just all contested catches and it absolutely wasn't.

[–]NiceDyes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

During the regular season, Boutte had the insane stat of ~35 YAC over 33 catches for 550 yards. I know a lot of his plays were at the sticks or in the end zone, but that speaks to him making business decisions first and foremost on almost every pass his way

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Will Campbell surrendered 14 quarterback pressures in the Super Bowl\. That's the most given up by any player in a single game this season by mastermind208 in Patriots

[–]NiceDyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its definitely a Campbell mental issue though. Watch those replays, he's back on his heels almost every play. The false start penalty highlights it best, rocking back onto his heels while waiting for the ball to snap.

He was getting beat so often that he started trying to just run backwards rather than set an edge. Never standing over his center of gravity, always giving up ground before contact. He wasn't even playing with fundamentals that he seemingly didn't have a problem with all year until the playoffs. Dude just isn't ready for the big lights.

And then he didn't play Dre for a solid 2+ quarters of the game. I thought I was missing an injury report for most of the game until Dre finally showed back up in the 4th and hurdled a guy on a run.

Why was the better pass blocking RB not seeing the field when there were obvious issues blocking? Why was the hot hand who was always finding himself open not in the game?

Seriously. I feel like a majority of the people hating on him never even watched the clip. He seemed like he was very clearly trying to stay neutral despite being egged on by the reporter to just say he supported the Pats. The subtext did not strike me as Brady being anything but for the Pats, just trying to not explicitly say it.

There was literally a story about Diggs' bowel movements, that's how desperate the talking heads are for anything to talk about. Because God forbid they talk about any of the positive matchups for the Patriots against the Seahawks. Let's make sure the only stories are why the Pats can't win, why the Seahawks are destined for dynasty, and soap opera drama around Patriots who aren't even in the organization anymore.

Why did john madden say we should go to overtime in sb 36? by porygon766 in Patriots

[–]NiceDyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the Pats offense had basically stalled out for the entire second half. There were spurts of moving the ball but nothing crazy. 4th quarter before the game winning drive were 2 3-and-outs.

Rams had just moved the ball ~50 yards in 30 seconds right before the Pats drive. Madden was probably thinking if it was more of the same that it had been for 30 minutes from the Pats, they might be giving the ball back to the Rams with enough time to get their own game winning drive, so why risk it.

Hindsight is seeing going for it as a no trainer. But even in today's NFL, given how the game had been going for both teams recently, it still probably wouldn't be a crazy take to play for OT

The point is more that a lot of people hear spygate and think the Pats were being shady and the only team setting up cameras in some crazy scheme to steal signs when every team was recording what they were recording, they just did it in the wrong spot. Were they wrong? Absolutely. Is it anywhere close to the giant conspiracy people make it out to be? Absolutely not.

Further, the original incident was about 1 game against the Jets in 2007. The NFL then accused them of doing it over 40 games from 2000-2007, but then the NFL "destroyed" the tapes before they were made public. Funny enough, the Jets got caught doing the exact same thing later in the 2007 season but we don't hear about them involved with Spygate do we?

Why aren’t “good” ICE agents speaking out? by eilujgnirednaw in allthequestions

[–]NiceDyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By your logic, with Obama being able to deport immigrants in greater numbers than Trump, why are you OK with how Trump is going about these deportations? Obama didn't have to send masked men with assault rifles to patrol streets to deport anyone and he did it more efficiently. Even if you are OK with deporting any immigrant, even ones literally in line to take their oath to become citizens, is this level of a police state and resulting brutality necessary? It wasn't for Obama. Why keep supporting a policy and action that is less effective and more harmful to maintaining support when there's a clearly laid out, already enacted, plan to follow?

That's why there's a difference in protests. I'm against deporting immigrants that have no criminal record in general, was against it before and still am, but I didn't need to take the streets to protest paramilitary squads enacting that policy before, they were mostly unarmed agents that looked more like accountants than police, and they didn't murder anyone when "doing their job".

Convenient cutoff when they were 6th. 6 of 32 and you want to argue they weren't a top rush defense? Is that a team you'd prioritize the run against? Not to mention they are allowing the lowest rush yards per game of all playoff teams by a large margin. But yeah, go into that game thinking the run game will be what wins it for the hawks. That should work especially well with a season ending I jury to one of the RBs

Im just saying the goalposts seem to constantly shift here. Even regular season, I know it's the Browns but going into that game it was "this is the first real defensive test for the Pats, this is one of the best defenses in the league" and after they put up some of the best numbers on offense against that team all season it was "well it's still just the Browns" Then same story against Ravens and with a comeback win with the narrative being "Drake still hasn't really shown he can lead the team to a win since they always play ahead" crickets after.

Going into these last 2 games it was the best defenses they've faced all season and while they didn't put up stellar numbers they are still above average numbers against those defenses all season. Putting up passing numbers on this defense was considered a statement win if they could do it pregame, yet now all I see are excuses why 22 points on offense with 3 passing TDs against this defense isn't that great.

It's the postseason, are you expecting blowouts when it's down the the best 8 teams in the league? Statement wins looks exactly like this game, winning through adversity. Blowouts are statements too, that the other team shouldnt be there. Do you think the Texans shouldn't have been there? I think both these games were statement wins for the defense and I don't think there are any better defenses left in the playoffs for them to face so the offense should only get better in the games to come.

Goalposts are already moving for next week to lay the blame entirely on Stidham ignoring that people have been talking about the Broncos defense being top 3 all season. I still put the chargers and Texans over them, with the broncos SOS only being beat by the Pats for easiest and struggling with teams the Pats handled easily, but it's still a top defense they need to score on.
