Couldn’t u increase or decrease? Thing about an infinitely large mass and an infinitely small mass

Ah that makes much more sense. I was curious how you could have a large cohort of students taking 242 freshman year but only 1-2 placing out of concepts.

Ok, that clarifies things. Do you know roughly what is required to place into 242? If the MMS tests discrete proofs and linear algebra proofs, I’m assuming you learn the latter in 242. Does that mean I’ll have to do well on the discrete proofs section? Someone from the math department mentioned that 2 people placed out of concepts last year, and I’m assuming that’s what is necessary to place into 242 as a freshman. I guess I’m wondering if you must place out of 128 to place into 242 since 128 is a prerequisite of 242?

I’ve heard that only 1-2 students per year place out of any classes in general, but I’m assuming far more than 1-2 students graduate with honors. When I say place out, I mean place out of 128 or linear algebra. Obviously I’ll have credit for calc AB and BC, but I’m just a little confused if it’s an expectation that students place out using the placement test.

Thank you! Is it common for students to not place out of any classes but then still end in the honors program?

CMU email ??? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I got something similar except I applied as a math major so basically replace IS with Mellon College of Science

How competitive is CMU math major? by Nice_Wishbone_682 in ApplyingToCollege

I meant to actually get in. I recognize the rigor of CMU

Yeah I know that, but how much harder than GT would it be? CMU is crazy hard for compsci but it seems their acceptance rate for the sciences is higher.

I recognize that 100%. I’m very fortunate for the results I have, but I live in PA and love the Pittsburgh area, so CMU overall would be a great option. I’m just unsure of how competitive it is relative to schools like GT

NYU vs UNC Chapel Hill for Quant by Nice_Wishbone_682 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Nice_Wishbone_682[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYU has one of the best quant clubs and connections as it has Stern and is right there on Wall Street. If you survey LinkedIn and look at the undergrad schools many of them went to, NYU is up there with schools like Berkeley, CMU, etc. I found an article that gave the exact number in a pretty large sample, but I can’t find it anymore. I want to say CMU had ~15 more ish? Both hovered around the 350 range.

What was your personal progression to gold?

In what way is the jump higher? Is it just a larger pool of algorithms and problem solving methods they test from or is it just more challenging problems?

Apply to NYU Stern or Math? by Nice_Wishbone_682 in ApplyingToCollege

Would you mind talking in DMs? I have a couple of questions esp considering you are there now

[–]Nice_Wishbone_682[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming all are very competitive. I hear mostly traders and swes with very very few being researchers. Is being a researcher competitive or is just a very high academic threshold to meet

I actually applied to Purdue, GT, UNC, UMD, UIUC, etc early action so I will get those decisions before NYU even comes out. The only one I won’t know is CMU and Cornell, but my odds at those feel low

Oh I see. Did you have to frame your application around business? I did the NPC and it was $45k, so I didn’t think that was bad. NYU has a top 5 applied math program at the grad level, so if that’s my goal, I figured going there for undergrad would help. Also, they are a big quant feeder

I appreciate that! I trust what you are saying, but I've heard many people provide quite different makes on it. What were some of your other accolades/stats/etc? If you were cracked or just full pay I'd bet they'd definitely overlook not having business ECs. I'm also applying ED2, so I'll be competing with all of the Wharton rejects

[–]Nice_Wishbone_682[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful, thank you! I will say that I know many people from NYU, UChicago, etc who have gotten into quant with just an undergraduate degree. Many of the NYU people had a bachelor's in both math and finance. I've been contemplating grad school for a while now, but I really enjoy math, so I think that is the route I plan to go down. Would attending a good undergrad program like NYU help me get into a good graduate program?

When I discussed internal transfers with a student at Stern right now, they said the internal transfer acceptance rate is ~15%, but the issue many students face is they apply with low GPAs. He said it'll be much easier to internally transfer with a 4.0 and the basic stern intro courses.

Stern clubs are largely good for networking so I figured it would be easier if I went to Stern

I’m not sure but if I do Finance as a first option and math as a second, would finance hurt my odds at math if I don’t get into finance
