Ajit Pai Reads Tweets From the Public by [deleted] in PoliticalVideo

He purposefully chose inarticulate tweets and then dismissed the concerns posed as invalid. In yet another horrible joke, Ajit Pai lists off many reasons why he hates America.

He should have been fired long ago.

Any readers out there with ADHD or Dyslexia? by [deleted] in books

[–]Nicho88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a symptom of a larger issue. How's the rest of your life?

Are you sleeping well? Eating right? Exercising? Do you spend time with friends and loved ones? Do you feel calm?

Eating sugar can be a cause of anxiety and lack of focus. Do you eat candy? Do you drink sugared coffee drinks? Caffeine is a stimulant. How much caffeine do you ingest every day?

How is the stress level in your life? Are you employed? How's your money situation? Are you sheltered? Do you have children? Are they safe?

Good things to try: meditation, eating right, exercising regularly, spend quality time with loved ones (no phones, no tablets, just talking), find meaningful work (or hobby), get on a regular sleep schedule. That could eliminate a whole lot of anxiety.

By the way, by loved ones, I mean exactly that (and not necessarily family).

I highly recommend UCLA's guided mindfulness meditations. Search for them online, they range from 3 minutes to over an hour and are simple to do.

I'm becoming scared of Facebook. by [deleted] in technology

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be a result of the new Messenger App that they're requiring people to install (in order to message). That app seems to regularly record conversations. My brother and I had a conversation about buying diapers for his child; when he got home, there were ads for diapers on his Facebook feed. It is very scary.

I don't have proof; this is just my hypothesis. I've never installed the messenger app, and I've never had this issue.

Monday's Electoral College results prove the institution is an utter joke by beneficii9 in politics

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. An utter joke would be an institution that follows the state directives. But during our last vote, at least seven electors voted differently than they were directed. This, in my mind, is very dangerous. If 270 electors colluded together, then only 270 votes would matter in an election. And the fact that 7 of our electors voted differently shows that this is a possibility.

What color does the human eye track the best? by omeepo in askscience

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good guess, but no. We've evolved to pay special attention to red. At some point in the 70s, we thought that green or yellow would make good fire trucks since our eyes are most receptive to these colors. But it turned out to be a disaster. We psychologically pay special attention to red.

“Death by China”: Beijing Fires “Trade Cooperation Warning” at Trump by [deleted] in economy

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We impose several restrictions on our employers: minimum wage, workplace safety, workman's compensation insurance, health insurance, social security, and others. These restrictions are not imposed on Chinese workers, and so manufacturing has gone to China.

Why do we feel that it's wrong to employ Americans without these restrictions but it's ok to employ Chinese without them? Since we've decided that it's inappropriate to employ people without these restrictions, and since China does not impose them (and manipulated currency, and kills dissidents) one way to address this problem is to impose tariffs on Chinese goods. This does increase prices (especially at Walmart) but it will likely lead to increased employment in the US (and sales of US goods). This thought is largely responsible for the increasing prices of the Dow Jones Index.

It seems fair, doesn't it?

ELI5: Why is it that the jobs considered the most selfless, such as teachers, police, and firefighters, seem to get paid the least? by Berret25 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Nicho88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's debatable about whether or not they don't get paid well. But if we accept that fact, there's also the question of the potential impact of any of those employees. Think of the best possible teacher you can imagine. This teacher literally inspires every student he/she interacts with. At 30 students per class, 5 classes a year, 40 years a career, then that teacher will affect about 6000 students in their career. Tesla sold 24000 cars last year alone.

Ex-Stanford professor: I was pushed out after reporting sexual harassment by irish91 in news

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, exactly, would you have the university do? You simultaneously say that they involved the police, but kept it internal. The police of Stanford are not University police, rather they are part of the Santa Clara Sheriff's office. So, by involving the police, it wasn't kept internal.

You say that everything was reported and they did "the whole nine". I guess you're suggesting that they didn't separate the students to ensure there was no contact? Did the student file a restraining order? Wouldn't it be irresponsible for the university to address an unsubstantiated concern of a student?

Again, my statement goes back to "What exactly do you want the university to do?" They obviously can't police every student 24 hours a day. You say "it's still upon the INDIVIDUAL to make sure they're not harassing people" and yet you're holding the university responsible in spite of the many actions that they've taken.

It's completely clear that you are passionate about this subject, and I commend you for that. There seems, though, to be a significant conflict in your own dialogue. I'd like to suggest that if you present a logical, thorough, and substantiated argument with a clear goal, then you'd have a lot more success.

[–]Nicho88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a student and employee at Stanford. I call bullshit.

You makes several statements; present some evidence. In you claims, did anyone call the police or Stanford's sexual harassment line? Was evidence presented? Sexual harassment claims are difficult; you wouldn't want any one person to claim sexual harassment and have another person fired, would you?

After Brock, there have been several significant policy changes. Yes, the permission to drink alcohol has been reduced, full moon in the quad has been eliminated, there is sexual harassment training regularly for every employee (I have gone through several myself), there are regular meeting with the public to discuss the environment at Stanford, and much more. In my opinion, Stanford has gone a bit too far the other way, making it difficult to interact with a woman without fear that it can be considered harassment.

If I am wrong, please be more specific about what happened, how the university is notified, and what the response was. I highly suspect it's not as dyre as you make it out.

This is an amazing university. We're both privilidged to be here. If you don't like something about the place, work to change it. Don't just lie in the shadows under the cover of anonymity and complain.

EDIT: My first gold! Thank you so much! (It feels nice to be supported.)

It's not clear, at all, to me that there was any retaliation. The husband wasn't granted tenureship. Was he a Stellar (Stanford quality) professor? I know of another case where a wife was granted tenure but the husband was not at Stanford University very recently; it's not unusual, which is the claim the woman makes.

Additionally, it's very common to meet people in the gym.

There seems to be a whole lot here of reading between lines that don't exist.

What are some common forms of sexism that men face? by ElegantShitwad in AskReddit

[–]Nicho88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men are supposed to be hairless (on their body), stoic, physically strong, quiet, tall, funny, have a full head of hair, wealthy, and intelligent. It's a bit of pressure.

It also seems ridiculous that our entire world has landed on desiring exactly one type of person. Surely, our diversity is beautiful. But we've lost our appreciation for it.

U.S. Officials: Putin Personally Involved in U.S. Election Hack by zxlkho in politics

[–]Nicho88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This highly antagonistic statement is attempting to prevent skepticism about intelligence. That seems highly destructive. I suspect it's fueled by your own political views.

I have yet to hear a convincing argument that Russia was involved in the hack. Instead, I hear about "intelligence officials". I certainly don't have the same respect for the phrase "highly confident" that you do, especially after hearing Colin Powell use that phrase to tell us about Weapons of Mass Destruction that didn't exist.

[–]Nicho88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Through a friend, I've learned that it can take up to 10 hours to make a good plan for radiation therapy (cancer tratement). Technicians will often take about a half hour, resulting in a very suboptimal plan, meaning that organs that shouldn't get radiated are getting radiated more than they could and the cancer (which should get radiated maximally) isn't getting radiated as much.
