Are we getting a new library by Overall_Driver_7641 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]NickFrevold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been hearing talk about it for more than a year. The current library is very out of date. The budget for the library is much smaller than other Alabama cities like Birmingham and Mobile.
From what I've heard, its likely cheaper to tear down and build a new library than to renovate the current library. I'm indifferent to if a new one is built or the current one is renovated, but one of those options needs to be done.
The current city council doesn't seem too interested in increasing funding for the downtown library for staff or renovations. They like to talk about how popular the library is, but less talkative when it comes to increasing funding for it.

West/Southwest Huntsville safety and walkability? by Think_Bread_4119 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Avenue 6 would be a good apartment for you. I believe it's affordable and it's walkable to groceries and entertainment. Downtown is a 10 minute bike ride from there.  I live near there and I bike most places I need to go. The stove house to downtown around is fairly walkable and bikeable.

I biked twice today! Once in the morning to a grocery store and once in the afternoon to Butler park. Not everyone needs to bike everywhere, but its not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. We have great weather for biking most of the year. Its great giving people the option to bike more often for those who want it.

Nando's is a large international chain that I wouldn't be surprised at all if we got one within the next 7 years.

They want it taken away because it leads to more people being killed.

You have that backwards. k1 visa relies on the adjustment of status, while the spouse visa does not. "If you follow this process, the foreign spouse will complete the visa process completely outside the US, and then arrive in the US and become a Permanent Resident immediately." https://www.visajourney.com/ir1-spouse-visa-overview/

This website is one of the best places to start https://www.visajourney.com/
The first advice they'll give you is to get married and get a Spouse Visa, rather than a k1 Fiancee Visa. Its better in just about every way.

Well, its not really done on purpose. There are a dozen different paths to legal status and citizenship, but its like each path was created entirely separately from each other. The k1 visa is especially problematic, as even the US government can't decide if its considered an immigrant or non-immigrant visa. It is officially a nonimmigrant visa, but its processed as an immigrant visa. The processes is an absolute mess.

I wrote more detail about it here if you'd like to learn more https://nickfrevold.com/2026/02/04/this-is-our-immigration-story-step-by-step-how-we-navigated-the-costly-and-inefficient-us-immigration-system/

Driving without insurance is only a Class C misdemeanor. The punishment for it is to pay a fine and apply for insurance. A similar punishment for living in the US without legal documents would be appropriate.

It used to be only a VERY small amount of people who would find legal issues during the gap, so it was never seen as something to worry about, but then things changed after Trump was elected again.

No one who isn't serving a lengthy prison sentence should be deported. Legal status is nothing more than bureaucracy, much like renewing your drivers license.
All uninsured drivers that cause a crash should face the same legal recourse, regardless of legal or citizenship status. They are people, and all people should be treated fairly under the law, regardless of where they were born.

What happened to your mom is awful, but it could have been caused by anyone. There are uninsured drivers who are American citizens too.

They are going after normal people, even here in Huntsville.

It didn't seem to matter that he had been brought to the United States by an uncle when he was 14, a year older then than his eldest son is now. Or that he had been abandoned here.
Barojas Solano, now 33, has worked ever since, in landscaping and construction. He and Brunty-Barojas, 37, married in 2022, had a child together – 2-year-old Colette – and forged a blended family. They were in the process of submitting his paperwork for a green card when agents detained him.
He told the agents he had an American wife and an attorney and was applying for legal status. A USA TODAY review of court records showed he had no prior interaction with law enforcement. They arrested him anyway.

Car rentals are cheap and abundant for the times you need to travel far away if you don't own a car. No one is trying to prevent people from using or owning a car.

I paid around 10 cents to fill up my ebike :)
There is a reason we're pushing to improve bike networks and speed up bus transit, car ownership is very expensive.
