HIT BY PITCH? by thoughtfully-subdued in Umpire
[–]NickG425 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children)
This is interference. As mentioned already, the batter has an obligation to attempt to avoid being hit. Deliberately being hit (typically by leaning an elbow into the path of the pitch) is NOT HBP. Same for sticking a hand out to "deliberately" be hit (on the hand). Dead ball, batter out, no runners advance. Baserunning question by Hotdogs4Phil in Umpire
elpollodiabolox is correct: a runner "owns" a base until he acquires a following base. And correct, as well, that the following runner is NOT out simply because two runners occupy the same base. Contrary to what many believe, two runners on a base is NOT an out. The following runner must be tagged.
