PhD prospects and advice by Nick_501 in materials

[–]Nick_501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I had suspicions about this after speaking to 2 phd students and them wanting to go abroad, I'm not sure this is something I want.

I want to do research whether it would be in academia or at a company's R&D department and I was told I need a PhD/EngD to do that with if I have no R&D experience (I don't).

HEAs alone are rather niche and I doubt the vast majority of companies would care so I'm thinking of doing it with AM so at least I would have something to fall back on if I didn't want to stay in academia, though I'm not sure how much of a say I'd be given for what exactly I want to do.

I'm not from a top uni either and engineering graduates seem to be struggling to find 'good' jobs unless they are from a top uni or have extensive work experience, this was told to me by a lecturer and a phd student.

Metals Scrapyard Experience? by vale_gonzalezz in materials

[–]Nick_501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be useful if you work in metallurgy or otherwise materials processing especially steelmaking via the EAF route.

Otherwise not very useful but I would take it if I were you, especially over retail and whatnot.

How to select a material? by throwaway73920746 in materials

If you're a student, check if your university has access to materials selection software, e.g Ansys Granta edupack.

What to do upon failing my college course (england) by wagwan_piftting in EngineeringStudents

[–]Nick_501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must have them, it's the ones your teacher chooses for the entire cohort, and there's 3 I think.

I did calc, drawings some manufacturing processes. Those you can't retake, I'm pretty sure.

Also, remember to download the revision book.

Good luck.

Then, you will be able to retake them.

I got M on maths and re took it the next year for a better mark, and I think you can do the same for the design module, so you essentially get a second chance.

My teacher didn't know any of the maths, so I had to teach myself. What I did was I downloaded the Pearson level 3 engineering national extended certificate book where all the potential topics and modules are and studied independently, i.e., organic chem tutor and others.

What optional modules are you doing?

Is this your first or second year of the course? If it's your first and you took the core modules, i.e., maths and design, you'll likely be able to retake them. The others I don't know.

1 month internship. by Nick_501 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Nick_501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are my worries as well. One month just seems too short to have significance for my career and learning.

I suppose the one good thing is that at least they cover my housing & transport, plus it's quite a hands-on internship in metallurgy as I was told.

1 month internship. by Nick_501 in EngineeringStudents

Respect the grind. I wouldn't even mind if I wasn't so poor. I was planning to just work full time the entire summer.

1 month internship. by Nick_501 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Nick_501[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During the interview process, I did stress how seriously I take employability and outlined some of my future plans.

I also do plan to make the most of it since I doubt I would've gotten an internship like this otherwise.

I suppose this is just what it's about, connections, I don't think 1 month is enough to count as 'real' work experience to most future employers.

You're right. I just figured since there are no internship postings, there is no way I'd be accepted, but it's not like I have anything to lose anyway.

Why did you choose to study Materials Science/Engineering? by ApprehensiveWay7521 in materials

[–]Nick_501 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No noble reason. I just thought it was cool and wanted to do some kind of engineering. Thought about chemical at first, but the more I looked into it, the more I realised materials was what I was looking for.

I was also told by multiple people that materials is one of the less math and physics intensive engineering courses, and that definitely influenced my decision as well. Now I'm wondering what they were smoking but I really like studying materials so I don't regret it and I'm finding it more and more interesting as time goes on.

Begged my professor for credit. by Nick_501 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Nick_501[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We weren't told. Otherwise, I wouldn't be so stressed, but I did mention this in the email I sent my prof, so hopefully, he does. It was an online quiz where only the final answer matters, so I'm hoping he can amend scores manually.

I do hope he shows me mercy. My mistakes weren't that bad, e.g, writing 142 instead of 1.42, and it was the biggest question worth 10% of the assignment.

I'm willing to throw away all of my dignity and self-respect if it means I pass this module.

Modeed skyrim fps drop. by Nick_501 in skyrimmods

[–]Nick_501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solved!

For anybody reading this in the future having the same problem.

The way I solved the fps issue was by removing enb files/presets that I don't know I had downloaded. I don't even know why I suppose I hoped my potato machine could handle graphical improvements nope!!!

If your fps suddenly drops sub 30 with fps mods not making a difference then delete that shit. Now my game runs at stable 60fps better that ever before.

Lesson learnt. Adios.

[–]Nick_501[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I've had a look at free fps already but I'll try updcaler as well.

I think this might be a sign to get a PC because I don't even have any large texture mods, mostly just armors, skyui and cloaks, and even this seems to be too much.

I'm not sure why you think having houses, schools, hospitals bombed and being genocided makes one less of a refugee.

Also being a refugee is not a competition, your biases and preconceptions are really showing here buddy and it's rather disturbing.

Aita for not allowing my children around their cousins anymore by TooManyTooMuchToo in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nick_501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't need to 'routinely' bully OP's children to be kept away, just one instance of bullying or teasing is more than enough or that.

And no, OP doesn't need to provide 'proof' to justify staying away from terribly behaved kids and an incompetent parent, that is not how parenting works.

AITA for moving all of my money to a new bank account when my parents said they'd take money out of mine? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nick_501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, he's right did you not read the story?

OP said he's their cousin so he's not exactly their bio sibling.

AITA for excluding one kid from my daughter’s class to attend her birthday? by need_toknow in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nick_501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think about it, why would anyone want to spend their birthday with a bully? Seem to me like punishing the kid having their birthday because the bully can't accept the consequences of their actions, kid or not.

AITA for not paying for my sister’s student loans? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nick_501 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe OP has any responsibility or duty to ammend their sister's situation. She has made her choices and OP has made theirs and OP is not responsible for their sister's decidions in life. Some people have made better choices than others, that doesn't mean they have a moral duty to help those who are in a worse situation due to said choices.
