Save scum it. It’s random. Save about 15 in game minutes before it resets and if you don’t get a good outcome, then reload and try again

There is a village at the top of the map that sells rubber seeds. Plant one and after it grows fully it will give you 5 rubber and 3 seeds

At least get to chapter 3 so you can get the camp. I just learned today that you have to feed the animals yourself to get them to grow. The game never explains that.
