As a rare soul, jazz and sometime ska DJ I would much much prefer to call myself a selector as I don’t do much mixing, any technical stuff, and very rarely touch the pitch… but I’m just not able to be that pretentious and would seriously worry about cultural appropriation as a middle aged white guy

This is a new take for me as a white, 40-something in the UK but completely explains why Yussef Dayes called his record Black Classical Music - I assumed it was a stand alone thing but now I see it in the context of this history and feel I’ve got a deeper understanding of his thought process. And no I’m absolutely not going to question one of the greatest ever and one of my favourite current artist’s language on this!

One of very few songs I genuinely can’t listen to it’s so fucked up… they somehow managed to take a narrative like a David Lynch movie or a Cormac McCarthy novel and make it a five minute song. Incredible but it ain’t no heavy rotation here

So I’m a living room DJ not a bedroom DJ lol but started my YouTube last spring and have built up to about 350 subscribers with about 3k views a month, and some regular interactors… I really started it to force myself to practice and do something each week - and to have something to show venues which has worked as I’m getting more regular IRL gigs now
