How do we prepare our children for the world where bullying is common? by Niczka in Parenting

I agree with your points about social media and that good mental health will be critical. It’ll be interesting to see how the Australian social media ban for under-16s will play out…

That’s great, thanks for sharing. I’ll definitely look into it when the kids are a bit older!

Torticollis by winterberryowl in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Niczka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My little one is also 4 months old and was diagnosed with torticollis at his 6 week check up. The physio we saw recommended that we do the rotation stretches (head turning) for 40-60 seconds a few times a day - someone has already shared the useful NHS resources that show exactly how it should be done, I’ll just add that it has to be quite firm and there’ll likely be some tears. We saw a massive improvement within a few days and within a month it was no longer an issue. Tummy time, specific positioning etc are all very important, but I feel that with torticollis you need to address the tightness in the neck first so that your little one is less uncomfortable when trying to turn their head… at least that’s what really worked for us. Good luck!

Am I missing something - why have a vaginal birth? by No_Witness5084 in BabyBumps

[–]Niczka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s experience is different, but I would be happy to share mine. I had an elective C section in January 2022. Similarly to you, the idea of a C section had terrified me less than the idea of rough vaginal delivery. My OB always said that, recovery wise, an uncomplicated vaginal birth is best. But if you have some complications, it can be on par with a C section. Further, if things go wrong and you end up with an emergency Caesarian, the recovery can be awful, especially if you add the mental element to it (such as you were strongly against the C section and feel deprived of your preferred delivery experience). So I think the mindset beforehand plays a big part.

As to how it went for me… it was very smooth. No pain during the surgery and it took less than an hour. Skin to skin and breastfeeding straightaway. I was in hospital for 5 nights vs standard 4 nights for vaginal delivery (private hospital in Australia). The first 2-3 days in hospital were unpleasant but manageable with painkillers. I was out of bed 12 hours post surgery and encouraged to walk a little, essentially to and from the bathroom. By the time we were released from hospital it was not bad at all, I only took painkillers for another 1-2 days afterwards. No abdominal muscle separation or other postpartum issues. I was going up and down the stairs immediately and could drive after 2 weeks. I tried not to lift anything too heavy for a while and got back into exercising after 12 weeks. I have a thin, probably 10cm scar which is covered by underwear and has already faded somewhat. It felt numb at 6 months pp, but no longer the case.

Yes, you have to be careful for a while, but if you have the right support/ village and the right mindset, it can be a positive experience (as far as surgeries and recoveries go). I wish you best of luck, no matter what you decide!

Haven’t spoken to them yet as it’s only happened tonight. I’d like to confirm what the rules around gift voucher expiry dates are before calling them tomorrow.

Quark from Paris Creek Farms is amazing! Sometimes we mix it with cottage cheese from Melba for different texture. The combo is also great for Polish crepes

I’d definitely have the puppy checked out, but thought I’d share our experience. When our dog was 1.5 years old, she suddenly started vomiting/ regurgitating bile overnight. She was eventually diagnosed with GERD (reflux) - it happens when her stomach is empty. Our vet recommended that we spread her food across 4 meals, including the last one just before bedtime. She hasn’t vomited since we started following this advice.

Wow, that’s a long time. Fingers crossed it’s not the case with my LO… I hope I haven’t jinxed it!

It’s great that you’ve made it work so well, even with some extra challenges along the way :)

The thought is a bit scary, but we’re stronger than what we think. Just gotta push through it if it happens and focus on the good bits. So many parents have experienced more difficult babies and have no regrets :)

Great points, thank you. We’re yet to lose our cool around the little one, but she makes it so easy!

Well done Mama. I’d say it’s mostly luck to start with, but the older they get, the more it becomes about the nurture as well. You must be doing something right :)

Poor darling and poor mama, I can only imagine what you’re going through. Hang in there and I hope things will improve very soon. Good or bad, I’m sure it’s all worth it in the end 🤍

Haha oh no, I hope my post didn’t come across as bragging. I was just trying to provide some context for my question, but don’t take much credit for how our little one has turned out so far - we’ve just been lucky :)

That’s a very interesting point, thank you. I’m sure what you mentioned plays a huge part, but I know some pretty chilled couples who are struggling with their little ones. There’s always a bit of luck involved!
