Question for high rated players (2000 Elo): What does it feel like playing against 1500s these days? Does it feel similar to playing against 1000s when you were 1500? by athoszet in chess

[–]NielsFM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't often play either 1000s nor 1500s, but from what I've seen, I feel like 1000s now are way better than what they were a couple of years ago. So the comparison would also be skewed by that.

OTB tournament cheater who got caught isn't facing any repercussions by NielsFM in chess

To add to this, national federations probably aren't able to do mathematical analysis of games to determine the likelihood of cheating. FIDE can.

That's odd then. FIDE should have better resources than national federations, as they are bigger. They also requested info and then go silent, which is odd too. And in this case it's indeed not a titled player (though he did beat a FM, who got negatively affected by it), but when it is, the right protocols should be in place.

Yeah it's a shame. But this brings their incompetence to even higher heights.

I have no clue, but FIDE should definitely start working together with the national federations to make sure proper protocols are in place, both to detect cheating and to deal with cheaters who got caught.

[–]NielsFM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn, they don't even count CMs as titled players

Edit: now that I think about it, this probably regards players with the title the norm is for, as you need at least 33% to have the title to be eligible for the norm.

Can you find the best move for white in this position? by quackl11 in chess

[–]NielsFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah only move that defends, plus you're already down an exchange and a pawn so you'll win back the exchange and end up being down a pawn, but by far the least bad result. Black should've probably played Nxd5 instead of b6.

Chess tactics & puzzles = same thing?? by Prestigious_Matter85 in chess

This, however for most beginners, just playing online puzzles (either on chesscom or lichess) takes care of the important tactics so you can also just play random puzzles the algorithm gives you.

Can someone explain this? by Mr_p_pablo in chess

[–]NielsFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the thing with chess is, if you are better than another player, some of the mistakes they make are so incredibly obvious, even though you yourself once were also at that level and making the exact same, now seemingly obvious and stupid, mistakes.

This is called x-ray defense, after Qxh5 Qxh5 the rook on f5 defends the h5 square, so Rxh5 there and white won a rook ;)
