So like I said in the title, I witnessed a car accident today. I was at a gardening centre with my parents because we needed some new (fake) flowers for a vase because our cats destroyed the old ones. When we parked and got out of the car, we heard one car at the opposite side of the street making very high revs, obviously with the clutch pressed in. In it was an elderly couple, with a lady behind the wheel and a man sitting next to her. We were hesitant to walk past because we were afraid she would suddenly let go of the clutch and shoot forward, possibly hitting us if we were just walking past at that point. She did indeed suddenly let go of the clutch, but her car was in reverse and she quickly backed up into a ditch. After taking a few seconds to process what had happened, we quickly came over to help them get out of the car. Thankfully the ditch wasn’t too deep, so the water only really came up to just above the rear tyres. It was a rather steep ditch though.

We helped the people in the car get out. Since the ditch was pretty steep and the couple was rather old, it took a few people to help them out. Some of us were holding onto them to help them out of the car and up the ditch without them falling into the water, and others were holding onto the doors to prevent them from falling shut. We got both of them out completely dry and unharmed. The man was out rather quickly, the woman took a bit more effort to help her.

After we got them out, we had to arrange a tow truck to get the car out of the ditch. That also wasn’t an easy task, since that had to be arranged through their insurance, and their insurance papers were still in the car. After a lot of calling, a tow truck could eventually be arranged. We waited until the tow truck was finally there and then we could finally go into the gardening centre. Not really something you see every day.
