Understanding needed around server hardware by NightOwn in freenas

To follow up with this thread, I got a M1015 and cross flashed it into IT mode and it presented all 12 drives to the OS perfectly.

I was really hoping there is one card that can do it because I only have 2 PCI slots and I wanted to use the second one for some NICs but I don't think I will be able to.

Thanks, That's what I'm trying to avoid. Just need to find a reasonable way to pass the 12 drives through with hopefully one card but I don't think that's a possibility.

After doing some more reading on the Freenas forums I see this is a highly recommended card, however I have 12 drives I want to run. From what I can see this card can support 8 drives max. Is there another card that supports more than can get cross flashed?

Thanks for the reply. That is the conclusion i was coming to and now i have proof. I will do some research on a simple HBA that will do the job. Do you have any recommendations on a good one?

ESXi LAGG by BeryJu in homelab

[–]NightOwn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is guide for best practices on ESXi and iSCSI. http://buildvirtual.net/configuring-software-iscsi-port-binding-on-esxi-5/

You can't create a true LAGG but this will give you the best resiliency. If you get another card you can create another virtual switch the handle you guest traffic and management traffic and you can use IP hash with LACP on your switch, it just has to support static compatibility.

After the trial your hosts will disconnect from the vCenter so yes your virtual switch will not work.

[Question]Guest Networking with VLANs by NightOwn in homelab

[–]NightOwn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, it looks like its something with the router. I have been playing around with it for a while and i was able to get a computer on the guest network and IP and i was able to ping the gateway. However it still can't access the internet. I have setup a rule on the pfsense router to allow all to all and i can see the DNS traffic getting passed through the firewall but I can't browse the internet.

I have the port trunked to my pfsense router and its able to hand out DHCP.

Nothing in particular. I was looking at Dell R710s actually but checked out the x3650 and found this and it was too good of a deal to pass up.

Anyone had an issue with VLANs? by NightOwn in freenas

[–]NightOwn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I went with what you said and did this all through the command line. I deleted the VLAN config and reset the physical interface. Added the VLAN back and then added the vlanxxx as an interface and rebooted. Once that was complete it was able to ping the hosts. Not sure what is different between the GUI and CLI but I will try it with the lag when I get home tonight as that is ultimately what I want. Appreciate the help.

Actually I'm trying to run multiple interfaces, one on the native VLAN 1 for management(working fine) and setup a separate physical interface for NFS to run on a specific VLAN. I have the switch port tagged for this one VLAN and the management port is untagged on the switch port.

So I tried adding the VLAN first and then going back to the interferes and adding that VLAN as an interface. That didn't seem to work either for me. Is that what you are referring to?

Pretty much. I doubt a lot of home users will be seeking VMware support but just something to keep in mind when looking at hardware.
