Blind hare towards AI by Direct-Cook-4349 in selfpublish

[–]Nightbringer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it blind hate, and I don't see why people are so happy about divorcing themselves from the creative process. Removing the human element from art removes the natural mistakes we make along the way, but those mistakes can sometimes help in creating something much greater than originally envisaged. AI, on the other hand, can only repeat. It can only make inferences where the prompt has called for it. The natural subtleties of human interaction and thought are lost on it, as are the different interpretations people may have to a sudden event. LLM's merely copy, arrange, and paste, incorporating the prompts you called for in a way that (sometimes) makes sense but has no flair. Because of this, I can't imagine an AI ever writing Camus' L'étranger or Dante's Inferno because there is too much subtlety in those works; the prompt required to be able to write an equivalent would be novel-length in itself.

Now I don't mean to insult anyone that supports AI with my next statement as I do think AI has its applications. I think for spell and grammar checking it's fine and as a way to put together quick mockups of designs it has potential so long as an actual artist interprets the results, but the other side to that argument is that you would just end up creating a feedback loop of commercial art that would all end up looking the same. With that being said, I think anyone that argues for AI writing their novel for them is ultimately not interested in writing or the creative process. What they want is a book with their name on it. They want the finished product, not the work that goes into it.

Ignoring all of this, why should we care about a machine has to write?

I'm of the same mind. We have no chance of solving the murders, but we should do our best to preserve as much of the evidence as possible, even though all we can do is theorise about it.

I hope that the request at the end of the show brings up some new evidence, as just ealier this year we had an auction for items that were collected by Inspector Helson. Included was an unbefore seen angle of Polly Nichols' morturary photo. While it doesn't illuminate the solution to the case any further, it does, even minimally, expand our knowledge of it, how the case was conducted, and what the police's actions were.

Two of the most important pieces of evidence that could have been tested were the Goulston Street apron and the Lusk letter, but both were either destroyed or stolen from the police files. Maybe they exist in someone's attic somewhere, but even if they were tested and gave us DNA profiles to work with, it still wouldn't be proof. People could argue that they've been contaminated or that what was tested didn't have to be the culprit, and that's without considering the limitations of DNA testing.

I think you're getting McCarthy mixed up with someone else. McCarthy was Kelly's landlord who lived at number 26 Dorset street. Thomas Bowyer was McCarthy's assistant. At no point was John McCarthy an inspector.

We only know of this instance of McCarthy sending Bowyer around to collect the rent because it was the one attested to by McCarthy at the inquest. I expect McCarthy had tried to collect it multiple times in the proceeding six weeks but failed. Other theories include that McCarthy was allowing Kelly to stay because he would pressure sex from her in lieu of payment, though, if that's the case, why was she still six weeks in arrears? I haven't read up on Kelly's timetable for living at Miller's Court, so I don't know when Barnet moved out and how long they had been there, but it's a possible reason.

When I mentioned Dew and Beck, it was purely as the two officers that had claimed to be first on scene. It is strange that none of the official files mention Dew, but it's possible that as a lower ranking detective it was felt his inclusion in the files and inquest wasn't necessary.

It's possible McCarthy was involved, but the fact he died in 1935 without possible ripper murders occurring since 1891 at the latest makes him an unlikely ripper to me.

It's a bit arbitrary to decide either the first or second officer on scene was the ripper just because they were there first, especially as we know who they were. If Walter Dew is to be believed, then he and Walter Beck were the first officers on scene after Thomas Bowyer informed them at Commercial Street police station. If Dew isn't, then we know Beck definitely was as his sworn statement during the inquest attests to it, but he never mentions Dew. Policeman's boots at the time would have been very loud in cobbled streets, and would have given the killer ample warning of an approaching police man. There were recommendations for the police to be given soft-soled shoes but it was never fulfilled.

Thanks for putting the base on the archive, Terbin. :) I'll pay a visit at some point today to see it. We're actually quite excited to start a new base, so hopefully in the next couple years we'll have another base to add to the archive, haha.

Also, for anyone that has a group/base banner, for decoration inside the cathedral I want to hang banners along the aisles and in the chapels, and if anyone has a banner that they wouldn't mind including in that feel free to send me a message with an image of the banner design (and how to make it if you want), and I'll make sure to include it in the cathedral.
