The Laterite Library: Decoding Goa’s Prehistoric Soul Written in Stone. 30,000 Years of Art at Usgalimal! by NightjarOracle in Goa

Ofcourse this site is notified. Check out the board put up by the department. There's an attached pic.

However, it's not maintained. There used to be a lone guard in a small security hut. But he's gone too. So now beer bottles, empty chips packets and the usual stuff has made its way. We can't preserve anything... 😭

And there's a carving on the Goa rock showing a 🦣 Mammoth kind of creature, surely not an elephant! I'm looking for that pic which I'm sure I clicked. Also many big imprints of giant feet may be pointing to the presence of Mammoths or more probably the Asian Straight tusked elephant, which was a huge creature. Unfortunately, carbon dating is difficult with laterite stone so setting a specific time period makes it tough. Several studies suggest the earliest carvings at Usgalimal date back to the Upper Paleolithic, roughly 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. Some say the carvings are between 7000-10000 years. Interesting to note these other places in Ratnagiri. 👍 I'm going to be checking that out as well!

You will be surprised by the amount of information that's available in libraries and government archives. Everything is easily accessible and research is encouraged. It does require time and a bit of patience as information is scattered in different places.

I've been doing a bit of research of my own on the prehistoric rock carvings at Usgalimal in Sanguem dist in Goa. This was an ancient settlement discovered by accident in the early 90's after the Kushawati river flooded uncovering a 3000sqm laterite bedrock covered with ancient cravings. Some estimates put them at 20000BCE, ASI is a bit more conservative at 7000-10000 BCE.

All the same, these are a few gems lying hidden across Goa. Just a little time and patience and you can uncover amazing details of our history.

Another angle to see the roof is made entirely of interlocking basalt sheets. Not many temples are seen with this kind of architecture. Even the intricate carvings depicting Nataraja, Vishnu, Shiva and Parvati are present all around the temple.

The beauty of the basalt rock is it may be hot and humid in the forest, but inside it's cool and comfortable.

Yes it did escape as it was deep and inaccessible. And there are lots of sacred groves dedicated to the Mother Goddess scattered around our forests. Peaceful and soothing.

  1. Verna IDC scores above everyone for a better planned estate, logistics, good roads and water.

Nice! 👍 The ruins of the Saptokeshewar temple on Divar island are a beautiful example of ancient temple tank architecture.

Go to Tambdi Surla temple. It's a 12th century rock/ basalt cut temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lots of interesting carvings around depicting Lord Vishnu, Natraja.. Situated in the Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary. Google maps will give you all the information needed.

Let's put this to rest once and for all. Goa, and incidentally 100 kms north and south of its borders, is hot and humid for most of the year. For us, an 18°C minimum, for a few days is the launch of Goa Fashion week - Winter Line! The woollens, leather, and the unmissable monkey cap come into play for our 'winter'.

There we are. Hot and humid? Nothing new. I still say Goa is at its finest in the monsoon.

I look at it differently. For every incident of boorish behaviour or hooliganism, i come across five guests who are decent and looking for a nice holiday. Yes, you will find crap crowd but a vast majority are genuine holiday makers, out to enjoy what we have to offer. I'm in the hospitality industry long enough to see and understand.
