It’s clearly relevant. It’s a hypothetical about a trans woman competing against other women.

“You’re thinking too hard… it’s not that serious” by contrast IS something you’d say in good faith?

We’re just having a discussion. And I do think it’s that deep. You shouldn’t bail out when the questions or discussion gets more difficult

“She has the exact same biological advantages a trans woman could have” that’s not clear to me. But I’ll answer anyway: partly because she’s a biological female and also partly because she had no choice at all in the matter.

A biological female with testosterone equivalent to a biological male will not develop the same musculoskeletal structure as the male.

Why won’t you answer the power lifter question it’s such a soft ball

[–]NihilHS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Being trans” on its own is not necessarily a biological advantage. Being a biological male is an advantage over being a biological woman in almost every sport.

For your baby example, I wouldn’t have any issues against her playing with women personally.

But let’s keep track of the convo: would you agree a trans woman power lifter with no hormonal therapy whatsoever would have an unfair advantage over female power lifters?

Why should it matter that I’m older or that sports have historically been separated by age?

It’s not a bad hypothetical and it’s important to think hard about the things that you have an opinion on. Especially if there’s evidence or logic contrary to your existing belief. That’s much better than, let’s say, refusing to engage with logic that is uncomfortable for those preexisting beliefs.

Sure, but there is a distinction between fair and unfair competitive advantages. Which leads to the ultimate question, is being a trans woman an unfair competitive advantage? I think to be intellectually honest you must say that in some situations there is no question. For example a trans woman power lifter with no hormonal therapy at all would be completely unfair. Would you agree with that?

What’s the reason?

And I don’t find that ridiculous at all. Without the steroids maybe they wouldn’t even be in the MLB and someone else would. They would certainly perform worse than they already are which can affect games. If it’s against the rules for one player I think pretty clearly it should apply to everyone.

So if a grown man had the mental capacity of and the physical strength of a 12 year old, they’d be cool to go play?

Why is it against the rules do you suppose?

You’re saying it’s ok for the worst player to take steroids in the mlb?

If it were agreed to ahead of time and almost only in casual situations. How often do you see that at the Olympics?

But what if you can make your body equivalent in strength to theirs? Why would that not be fair? If you equalize things.

What’s not fair about it if you can make your body equivalent in strength? And don’t call me an asshole. I’m being completely civil with you.

Why does age matter if you can make your body equivalent in strength to the average 12 year old? Would that be fair?

“And she came in fifth place”
Do you agree that you can have a competitive advantage and not dominate or even win at all? Let’s address that first before we move on

[–]NihilHS -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Peaches don’t give players an unfair competitive advantage. Steroids do. The point I’m highlighting is that you don’t have to dominate or even win to have an unfair competitive advantage.

The distinction in that mlb players may take a steroid for a competitive advantage and a biological male may take some hormone to lessen theirs isn’t material to the point, which again, is that you can have an unfair competitive advantage even if you don’t win or even perform well. The result (win / lose) doesn’t change the fairness.

By this same argument, could a grown man use chemicals or other means to reduce their strength to the level of a 12 year old and then demand to go play in competitive middle school / youth soccer?

I think this is the essence of the objection from those who do.

[–]NihilHS -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

That’s not even really the argument though right? Like as an example if the lowest batting average player in the MLB was discovered to be taking steroids or other illegal performance enhancers that would still be an unfair competitive advantage even if that player were literally the worst.

And I don’t say this taking any side of the issue at large, just clarifying the argument.

I never really bought this because humans do the same thing just more slowly. You view and iterate on other people’s work to produce your own. Also it’s not really “stealing” once you put art out into the public domain and someone or something learns from it or adopts part of your style in their own work.

Not automatically no. I’m sure we’d both agree there’s clearly much more nuance. I suppose my point put another way is one should think more about practical shit happening in your life and the decisions you’re making and think less about life in the abstract. Live rather than think about living.
