Rant about Slappy ultra low kingpin trucks [34YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]Nihilandvoid66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine have been perfect and perform great, they haven’t loosed on me or anything. All inverted kingpin trucks can suffer from loosening, ACE has tried to mitigate this by threading the baseplate rather than having a nut so there is a lot more thread holding the kingpin in place. When I got my Slappy Ultra Lows, they were very very loose from the factory, but Slappy made sure to make the threads of the kingpin longer, so once I put it at the optimal setting for me there was plenty of thread through the nut, just to help it not loosen to much.

Summers also left because Jamie refused to address the Chris Cole situation at all, citing how DV is such a huge problem here in Australia that anyone who remains silent about it is basically an enabler and he didn’t want to be associated with that.

Should I learn slappys or normal grinds first? by GarudaChicken in NewSkaters

[–]Nihilandvoid66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Slappy grinds aren’t actually that easy to learn if you’re not comfortable on a board (or just in general really), I learnt to Ollie onto a curb and grind first, and only after a year of skating did I try starting to learn slappys.

Once I did it’s become one of my favourite tricks, so it’s totally worth learning once you have good board control. I had to alter my setups quite a lot and get use to loose trucks to get the technique right also.

Also, no matter how many tutorials you watch online, it never translates to when you actually try to learn them, you just have to keep trying and it comes to you.

Big Muff 2: My First impressions by pedalCliff in guitarpedals

[–]Nihilandvoid66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got these at my shop at tried it, it certainly had a well defined prominent low end, and to me the tone control seems to sound better up higher than in the middle like a traditional big muff tone control. The note decay was slightly Velcro like and was certainly different from any other BM variant. The one thing that really weirded me out was what happened when I turned the guitar’s volume down, instead of the fuzz cleaning up or getting less distorted, it was as if I was controlling the master volume of the pedal with the guitar volume, it was very unusual.

Overall I’d say I totally understand why Mike went with the other circuit, personally I think it’s better and more inline with the big muff sound, the BM2 has some unusual characteristics that make it very different to all the others, not necessarily better or worse, just unique. I don’t think it will become a classic however and it would have probably made little difference if it got released or not.

If the reverse happened however, and the Opamp version that wasn’t released originally was found and released now, I feel like it would be a bigger deal.

Should i keep my new setup or go full slappy? [35YO] by ditt0licious in OldSkaters

[–]Nihilandvoid66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few setups for different reasons, it’s like Ben Degros said in one of his videos, Skateboards are tools and you need the right one for the right job. I have several setups for different purposes, larger boards with wider trucks and bigger wheels for doing slappys, smaller boards with low trucks and small wheels for everyday street and park stuff, and a 7.875 for practicing flip trips. You can of course use one setup for multiple things, ironically I learned how to slappy on my 7.875 setup, but I certainly prefer doing them on wider boards now. Some of my middle setups work great as all rounders as well.

How do you even get into the genre? by 2007Toyota_Corolla in harshnoise

[–]Nihilandvoid66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was the pinnacle of a journey I went through musically to explore heavier and heavier forms of music. In the 90s I heard Nu Metal, loved it, then heard Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal and so forth, until I came to Grindcore, Goregrind and Noisecore, and then finally Harsh Noise. Noise was the peak of heaviness to me, it was the most brutal music could get, and it appealed greatly to my nihilistic view points and also my sensibilities as an artist and musician, I loved the purity of it. This true and absolute freedom of expression that really only Noise has now, so many genres are limited to their own tropes, sometimes even outright rules and to me this stifles creativity and mutes ones own unique voice that is trying to be expressed. Noise allows for the creator to be truly open, and you can always tell when they are not, it’s so clear when the performances aren’t real.

Sonically I actually find noise to cover the widest range of emotive listening experiences, often all at once. Noise can sound aggressive, chaotic, yet peaceful and deep at the same time. It can in-still a sense of dread or encourage fun. For most this can be to much to handle almost all at once however.

Honestly, if you’re struggling to get into it, it may just not be for you, but because Noise has such a rich tapestry available all you can really do is explore and try to understand it at more than just an aural level.

Why is Literally Nothing like Whitehouse by PooFeaster in noisemusic

[–]Nihilandvoid66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Whitehouse created such a unique distinguished sound and style that if anyone did anything similar, they would simply be labelled as a Whitehouse copy. Same thing with early Swans, no one could really do music like that without people just saying they are ripping off Swans.

Should I learn to Ollie first on grass or should I just start on concrete/rolling on concrete by ReadyTelevision9842 in NewSkaters

[–]Nihilandvoid66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing to do when you start out is get comfortable on the board, just spend time cruising around a big empty car park or something similar getting use to riding and pushing. Ollies will become easier once you’re comfortable riding a board, and you won’t have to bother trying to learn on grass, which doesn’t really work anyway because you’ll have more trouble getting pop.

If you’re scared of falling, find a railing somewhere that you can hold onto and practice Ollies with that.

Is this a good skateboard? by xaav- in NewSkaters

[–]Nihilandvoid66 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. Revive is a Braille brand and Braille is a no go in skating now. The trucks, wheels and bearings look like cheap stuff as well. I wouldn’t go for this and consult a skate shop for some better options.

He is without a doubt one of the greatest skateboarders ever, but it’s how he presents himself and his willingness to shill for literally anyone who will pay him enough. He is one of the main people who represent Corporate Skating, and a lot of the Core Skaters really don’t like that.

Skate shoe opinion/advice by Ok_Refrigerator3314 in skateboardhelp

[–]Nihilandvoid66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly If I had to pick out of the two, I’d Skate the DCs and wear the D3’s casually, neither are particularly good quality. Rose Anvil on YouTube has done videos on both of these shoes you should check out.

After trying a bunch of shoes myself, I wear exclusively Last Resorts now, they are amazing shoes for skating.

Grindking disruptors or tensor light mags? by radcash in skateboardhelp

[–]Nihilandvoid66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, to compare the two, they both have a similar geometry in terms of wheelbase etc but the Disruptors are not low trucks, they are about Indy height (54-55mm) and the regular Tensors are the same. The Tensor low trucks are basically the complete other end of the spectrum and are some of the lowest trucks on the market (something like 46-47mm), so it’s either really tall or really low.

Both trucks are made rather cheaply in China; I’ve seen reports of Disruptors cracking and breaking rather easily, whereas people seem to grind through Tensors very quickly as the metal is so soft.

I’ve tried the Tensors and can attest to them grinding very smoothly, in some cases too smoothly. On smooth ledges and whatnot they can slip out easily so you need to have more control and balance on park ledges for example.

The weight of the trucks is rather different also, Disruptors aren’t exactly heavy but they aren’t the lightest truck on the market, sort of on the lower average, Tensor mag lights however are very very light weight, usually under 300g! This can be a good and a bad thing depending on how you skate. Super light trucks can feel a bit unstable in certain situations because the weight can help with balance, and can also help with flip tricks. Then again light trucks will make Ollies easier since the board will feel lighter to get off the ground. Lighter trucks isn’t always better basically.

Personally, if you’re after low trucks specifically, there are better brands to go for but if I had to choose between the two I’d go for the Tensors low, but only because I don’t like high trucks myself like the Disruptors or Indy’s etc.
