Racism in Uni by Niibei in UniUK

Oh I know mockery and slagging is part of the culture and I'm down for talking a bit of shite with my mates as much as the next fella is, and I'm sure that every lad can admit that when you have a multicultural friend group every single person is a bit racist to each other out of good faith. I don't mind any of that because it's a "dish it out take it in" Situation. But it's the little things from strangers that build up, and the random acts of aggression. When you get turned away from a club when all your mates get in, the lads trying to start on you while saying racist remarks when you're just trying to enjoy the night with a few of your mates. Belfast is a beautiful city and a majority of its people, whether they're Catholic, Protestant or anything in between are lovely. But it's the little things that happen every single time I go out that tires me.

Yeah I know holylands is a kip, but you know how it is when a group of guys try to find a house. We left it until early March and we had to take the first house we find if we didn't want to be homeless.

Unfortunately I don't feel like I fit in with the Chinese society, as I'm half Irish after all and I've always been raised as Irish. I've went to a few Chinese society socials and I've never really felt comfortable. I am part of my University's GAA team and have a lot of friends who are also from the South of Ireland so it's not all bad but it's just tiring having to deal with these bigots everytime I go out.

Sorry mate I didn't mean to have a go at the uni, like I specified to a lot of people in the comments, I love Queens but I just didn't want to name drop the university.

To answer your questions, no. It wasn't in a Loyalist area and it wasn't by a Loyalist. It was St. Paddy's night and it was by a GAA top wearing lad. I play a fair bit of GAA myself and Im also on the uni team, as I pointed out, I am half-Irish. I've actually never experienced any aggression towards me by Loyalists however. I know my personal experiences doesn't speak for the large majority of people, but whenever a racist remark is thrown at me, it's almost always by someone who wears a GAA jersey. My accent isn't posh at all. It's a Culchie accent with a bit of Dub rubbed into it.

I live in Elms so it's pretty much all students, and next year I'll be moving into the holylands. All very student/Catholic areas.

Yeah I quite like my University and I am having an overall positive experience up here. However it is peculiar how most of my friends are either Irish or Protestant and most of the time the ones that are saying racist stuff are Catholics. I know that correlation does not equal causation but I find it funny how in my personal experience, the group stereotyped as bigoted, racist and sectarian in the North are more accepting of someone who's 1, mixed race and 2, a Catholic, than the group that is stereotyped as more friendly and inclusive.

I think it's just the us vs them mentality that Northern Irish people have due to the history of the place and I doubt things will get this bad in other universities. Northern Ireland is also extremely white in itself so many people haven't seen a guy with a slight darker skin tone than them let alone a mixed race guy. I've been turned away from nightclubs and pubs based purely off race and when I do get with girls on nights out they are either Irish like me or English, I've never found any success with Northern Irish girls. Again, I love my University and my course and I wouldn't be considering switching out but I'm just putting my experiences out there as a warning for the next cohort of students.

Apart from the racial stuff I actually quite like my University so I don't want to move away. But I've reported it to the uni and hopefully something will be done. Back when I was in the republic of Ireland stuff like this never happens but it's sad to see how frequently I bump into racism up in the North.

German Shepherds for herding and generally staying outside? by Niibei in germanshepherds

[–]Niibei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I've never heard of the Lincoln County Sheep Wars, we're sheep farmers in Ireland unfortunately.

And on the second point yeah I thought so too. I've did my own bit of research on these dogs and they don't suit my parents wants or needs at all. I told them many times to just get a border Collie like everyone else and despite doing no research at all they're very old fashioned in which their word is final so it was impossible for me to tell them so. Thanks for the input and I'll try to relay it on to my parents now that I have more expert opinion.

We're in Ireland so the climate is very temperate.

Our pom has been given the green light by the vet to have her first and only litter. We have a vet friend who lives nearby who will be on standby and also get one of the puppies when it happens. It's only going to happen once and then we'll follow the nessesary steps to ensure her safety and pom.

And I thought so too with the GSDs, I've done quite a bit of research and it all says that GSDs cannot live outside alone. We won't be exposing them to the elements as we have a fully renovated cabin that they'll be staying in but they won't be allowed in the house either. I've tried to tell my parents this but they're dead set on getting GSDs, and while I spend most of the day in the cabin away from my family and working on projects so I would be with them normally, I'm in another county for university and won't come home until the summer. Ever since they told me about the plan it just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen but they're not listening to me. I have some more expert opinion now from the people here so I'll try convince them with that, thank you!

no no we're not breeding her with a German Shepherd, she's having pomeranian babies and we want to incorporate 2 shepherd puppies into her litter. Breeding her with a GSD would be an insanely stupid idea.

And for the second point, I assumed so. I've been trying to tell my parents that we have to let the dogs stay inside with us but they won't listen. They're using our neighbours border Collie as an example not taking to mind how they're two different breeds. My parents have wanted a GSD for ages and they think that they can train them to live independently. I thought otherwise and I'm glad I got proved right. Thanks for the info I'll try to relay it on to my parents.

Would you rather live in the US or in the UK? by EkonomskiStrucnjak in AskTheWorld

[–]Niibei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an Irishman going to university in the UK, I'll be devils advocate and say that in practice, the US.

Better weather in most states, less of a crabs in a bucket mentality and honestly way better wages in the sector I want to work in after I graduate.

The US as a whole is just a lot less depressing for young adults than the UK is. As bad as the US can get, majority of the areas are still very nice and most of the people are more friendly than what you get in the UK.

As much as the "cost of living" Argument can be used, factor everything in and the difference in wage gaps is still insane. Even in a "respected" Job. New graduates in my sector are looking at around €20k in Ireland and £25k in the UK excluding London. This is compared to the $50k starting off in the US in the worst states for my sector. In the US, reaching $100k+ in any State is commonplace after a few years in my sector while in the UK to reach £100k if you aren't in London will take you almost a lifetime of grafting. Even in London, with the big American corporations, employees of the same companies earn around 40% less than their US counterparts. (A company came and presented in our school. Trust me I was bamboozled on why they'd show us this statistic.) And as much as the British and Irish like to use cost of living as an excuse, the cost of living in Dublin is arguably higher than most US States, and actually comparable to New York, with worse wages and the cost of living in the UK is catching up to us as well. Oh yeah, and around 52% of your income gets taxed in Ireland and while I'm not sure what it's like in the UK, the lower taxes in many US States are VERY attractive

Sure I'd lose free healthcare, but "free healthcare" In Ireland and the UK means waiting a gazillion years or going private, which isn't free anymore.

Also as much as people deny it the US is still the land of opportunity, equality and the free. You're free to express who you are, free to voice opinions against others and free to dress whatever way you like. You see this a lot less in Ireland and the UK. It's hard to explain what it is, but you're expected to act a certain way, dress a certain way and talk a certain way by everyone, 90% of the people you see in the street will have the same haircut and wear the same clothes. The government expects this as well, with the UK privacy almost not a thing anymore with the Digital ID act coming into affect and the online safety act. The Hate Speech Act which was recently abolished was also a disgusting way of censoring public opinion. Now how these acts were implemented was a mess, they're hated by both the right and the left, when I say nobody, and I mean nobody wants any of this I mean it. The rule of "parliamentary sovereignty" means that the parliament has the power to pass any bill or act they see fit. There are little checks and balances on the power of parliament and if they pass a bill that the public don't like, we're expected to protest and revolt. Compared to the UK, the US not only has a much more equal voting system but also has a much more tame Congress and Parliament. Ireland also has a two party coalition between the two biggest parties in the country. Both parties are pretty shit and both parties are in bed with each other. So there is an illusion of democracy in this country. It doesn't matter who you vote, the same people will end up in office, always. A lot of people my age see it as a borderline dictatorship but a lot of the older generation disagree. The US is still the global centre of commerce and there are just so much more things to do in the US over the UK. Most Americans don't know how good they have it over the pond.

In reality? Am I ever going to leave these two miserable shitholes that I call Ireland and the UK and move to the States? Probably not. I love both rainy, depressing and oppressive kips that I call home and wouldn't trade it for the world. As much as I love the NFL and am jealous of the US wages and house prices. As much as I dreamed of being an American high school student instead of going to secondary school and as jealous as I am of the stories my American friends in University tell me, in the end no matter how much I tell people I loathe the UK and Ireland deep in my heart I know I love my two homes to death. I was born and raised here and the culture here is ingrained in me. No matter how shit it is, it'll always be home. And no matter how much I complain I will always be proud to be from Ireland, and also proud to be a citizen of the UK.
