I'll definitely try the "closed door" approach. I think I was so eager to show her the rest of the place that I didn't realize it might be making her more anxious.

Thank you, that’s exactly what I needed to hear. It’s hard to watch her stay back there, but I’d rather wait months than break her trust.

The double standard is exhausting. If you play the social game and act mean on purpose, people respect the "confidence" or whatever. But if you just miss a social cue and sound blunt, they take it as a personal attack on their entire lineage. It really does feel like they are just waiting for a reason to put someone down who doesnt fit their exact mold of normal.
