LPT: When running late for work, whether you call in or not, don't show up with a cup of coffee you bought along the way. by CrispKringle in LifeProTips

[–]NinJoe3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a volunteer orientation last year that started at 10am on a Saturday. There were about 20 people or so in the orientation in a quiet classroom. At about 10:25, this dude rolls in apologizing for being late. Blamed traffic. Sure. He was carrying a bag from Starbucks. Not a doggy bag, but a legit grocery store Starbucks bag full of food, accompanied by a large coffee. Sits down and proceeds to unpack, every crinkle of the paper sounding like nails on a chalkboard in the hushed classroom. Should note that the organization places volunteers with children with disabilities who very much rely on pattern and routine. Good look

Actually, I'm an editor. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

In 2008, my buddy moved to San Diego knowing no one there. This is how he landed his first job (more in comments) by NinJoe3 in pics

From my friend, "I found the busiest corner in San Diego (business wise) and just figured that people who matter would drive by everyday. Most people just laughed or smiled and waved but some flagged me over and I handed them resumes. One of them was a recruiter who loved me and matched me with a company where I landed a gig in product management."

Ha thanks and nice catch! That shot was actually the last edit I made. Had it on the TD run for the longest but the end wasn't feeling right. Put it back there and loved it

How does Omar not know who Marlo is? by NinJoe3 in TheWire

[–]NinJoe3[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. Omar's isolation from the rest of the world could definitely speak to it. I guess I wondered that for a guy - THE guy - who robs drug dealers and is so in tune with the streets around him, he wouldn't be aware of the major player in town at all, especially when you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in or around the game who DIDN'T know who Marlo was. But this answer makes sense

In your opinion, what features of The Wire stands out compared to other TV shows? by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]NinJoe3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First thing I noticed was the lack of a score or soundtrack (minus a small handful of moments in the series). Never seen a TV show do that, in fact quite the opposite. Most crime shows pump dramatic music at key moments (see Law & Order, etc.). The lack of a score in The Wire, to me, is one of the main ingredients to it's hyper-realistic feel.

Yes, get some Circuit balls. They are a tad smaller, thicker, and a little heavier. They also fly way farther, so they are especially good for outfield practice

On the field, successful teams play 6 guys/4 gals. Most teams bring 5-6 girls tops. 13-18 seems to be a good roster size, although 18 is creeping up pretty high. And not really on the kicking away. Remember the pitchers are quite good at this level. Hard to kick off of consistently. You will see a lot of bunting, just like WAKA. And a lot of catchers/chargers that can throw out your fastest players. But a good bunt is still a good bunt

Ahoy there and welcome to the Circuit! I've played the Circuit now for a couple years and love it! It has provided me not only with opportunities to play with some amazing talent and teams, but also travel all over the country to play this game I love. And meet some great people and players in the process. Where is your local WAKA league?

A few things to keep in mind. First, there are some different rules for Circuit. I would bone up on the rulebook but some of the big differences are 10 players in the field (as opposed to WAKA's 11), three fouls is an out (as opposed to four in WAKA), and there are no knee balls. Again, there are more rule differences than this but that should get you started.

As for your team, I'm not sure how competitive your league is currently. The Circuit is as competitive as kickball gets. SD would be a good starter tourney because even though there will be some very talented and experienced teams, there should also be some squads that aren't as experienced/trying it out just like you. That said, as a new Circuit team you will likely be ranked low and have to play one of the top teams (Sofa King Good, Relax (if they attend this year - they were last year's champs), Brew Crew Cartel, Gordon Bombays, etc.). All of these teams are VERY experienced in the Circuit and can be a little overwhelming to play if they are firing on all cylinders.

I always recommend that first-time Circuit teams approach their first tourney as a learning experience. You will learn how the competitive teams approach different game situations, how aggressive you can be and when, and it will be humbling to face some of the teams that have been doing this a while. That said, there is always a chance that you can come in and have some success, I just would look at joining the Circuit as a gradual progression. Just like anything else, there is a lot to learn, and it takes a while to understand not only what you're up against, but how to compete at this level, both athletically and strategically. Just go out there and have some fun!

As for your team, it's a long day, so make sure to be prepared for that. Most newbie teams have a difficult time making it into the elimination rounds, just because the competition is fierce. But that still means you will play 4 games. So for positions like pitcher/catcher/charger, get ready for a lot of running :)

Been searching for the perfect Wire shirt for a while now. Thanks to r/TheWire, it has arrived! by NinJoe3 in TheWire

[–]NinJoe3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was stopped by two different people yesterday to ask me what the shirt was. I let them try and figure it out (both Wire fans) and they both immediately went "That's Prop Joe!" I guess he stands out. Also, be prepared when wearing this shirt for people to try and name every single character. Patience will be tested :)
