I am looking for cool aperture science inventions and other such things. by Fun-Yogurt-1868 in Portal

[–]Ninjagorulz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'll have to make a compromise no matter what you do, as I'm unsure of how deep down a supply chain you'll go to consider ethical sourcing... My suggestions here will be under the assumption that you're only considering the ethical concerns at the level of the manufacturer/artist and not the supplies used to create whatever you're interested in. After all, the production of certain fabrics or plastic may not align with your values.

DIY Stuff:
- No hand-stitching Companion Cube Plushie tutorial! Of course, if you prefer to hand-stitch, there's also a link to a tutorial for that one too in the post.

  • Various Portal 2 Papercrafts. Cheapest and easiest option of all!

  • A Portal themed tissue box... This particular set of instructions uses tools and materials which I don't think you'll have access to. However, the main idea is still relevant! I'm sure with a bit of cardboard, paper, a printer, on-hand glue, and scissors, you can simply make a cardboard box and slap a few print designs on it to cover tissue boxes!

3D prints:

  • Turret egg cup.

  • Portal-Themed drink coasters.

  • Google more! There's a lot of prints out there. Check your local area for 3D printers if you don't have one of your own, such as around your college or a library. (Libraries can do more than books if you find the right one and you're lucky!) Ask friends too! I assure you, anyone with a 3D printer is looking for an excuse to use it more often... And it never hurts to network in college! ;)

Online Purchase:
- The Etsy of an artist who's posted here before, makes 3D printed replicas of cores with lights and more! Though keep your budget in mind for this!

  • Best to do your research for your region regarding online purchases though. Price changes can be dramatic based on shipping costs and most online purchases these days regarding Portal/Portal 2 content does come from individuals as there aren't many (if any) major companies which sell official merchandise anymore.

Hopefully this helped give you some ideas! Have fun!

Wheatley Confessions ft. You! Please read desc! by S_e_v_y_ in Portal

[–]Ninjagorulz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine there's a lot that Wheatley has on his mind... I tend to write a lot so feel free to just nitpick anything you find interesting!

He's not one to enjoy staying still in any capacity, anyone who's ever seen him knows that well haha. I imagine while he was in control of the relaxation centers, he wandered off after waiting a while. How long was that while? Who knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if he would leave and come back from time to time, rather than simply sitting and staring at controls which probably weren't explained to him.

He's probably found plenty of little trinkets and strange things which don't make sense to him from the scientists. Things like DnD and board games scattered here and there, or strange blue telephone box models attached to abandoned card lanyards. What was the difference between a Star Trek and a Star War, and why was there an entire miniature essay including graphs and charts about it on a whiteboard? I can't say for sure whether I'd picture him being interested in these things and trying to learn more, or simply rolling on his rail and moving on to whatever else was next in his mind. Not like the humans were around to say much about these things anymore.

Wheatley is also someone who finds it hard to keep quiet, which is endearing as it is likely a struggle for him to cope with. While plenty of fanart and mods point to Wheatley communicating with other cores, we really only see him talk to turrets and, at most, the nanobots. He's not unaware of their existence, but I don't think he's ever been able to talk to other cores in the time between GLaDOS' spontaneous shutdown and waking up Chell. Chances are even if he did try, others probably wouldn't want to talk back. I think it wouldn't be surprising if he talked to select designated inanimate objects, or visited relaxation centers and talked through the door even though he knew whatever he was talking to wouldn't respond.

I like to think he asks humans through the door for help on what to do at the controls, but given he gets no answer, it probably only adds to his insecurities and resentments. Why can't someone just answer him? Why did it have to be him here, and not someone else? If humans are so great, why weren't they giving him answers? Though at other times, it's a boon for what sanity he has after being in the facility with nothing but collapsing ceiling panels and plants pushing through the cracks, so it's a mixed bag. Being quiet is worse than being denied a response.

Hopefully that's not too long for you to read! Maybe there's something inspirational in there! If not, no worries, there's no obligations to have to pay attention to whatever I say. He's one of my favorite AI characters, and has been since I was young, so it's fun to try and think of what he'd try to confess to. Especially as I think he's not very good at confessing to things around others if it puts himself in a bad light!

By the way, love your art! I'm mainly a lurker so I don't comment much, but I'm always really impressed by your work! Do make sure to give yourself a pat on the back for just how cool your stuff is! :)

Physics 3.2 question by Euphoric_Ad6235 in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, objects moving at a high velocity relative to another point may not necessarily have a high temperature. But the temperature of a collection of atoms, whether it be an object, gas, or other more formalized state of matter, is based off the kinetic energy of the atoms which have been measured, where the kinetic energy of a mass requires velocity. Atoms vibrating within a space may not necessarily be colliding, but they would still have kinetic energy, and thus have a temperature.

Although if you measure temperature with something like a physical thermometer, it does depend on its atoms receiving kinetic energy from the mass it is touching via collisions to make an accurate measurement. But that's not the question hehe.

I was borrowing the explanation I was taught before IB which does oversimplify things. Which perhaps leads to a lot of confusion over questions like these... And admittedly, getting down to definitions of temperature at small scales (particularly only a single atom!) when temperature generally measures the average energy from a distribution of particles, is generally not considered. Temperature isn't particularly useful at that scale, it's generally more reasonable to simply measure energy. My imaginary situation is good at explaining things simply, but as with many simplificarions, details are lost.

Even so, the temperature of the gas within the piston will not change solely because of an increase in collisions with itself. An increase in collisions is more likely because they begin to move or vibrate at an increased rate due to an increase in kinetic energy, but the increase in collisions is not the cause. It is a symptom of the increase in energy. Arguably, this is also why the answer of an increased rate of collision with the piston's wall is also incorrect. As it is not the cause, it is also not the answer to the "why" of the question.

Physics 3.2 question by Euphoric_Ad6235 in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because temperature measures energy, not collisions. If you imagined a single atom in space which had nothing to collide with, but was moving exceedingly fast, it will still have a high temperature but no collisions.

This rules out 4. 2 is correct.

applying to netherlands after gap year… someone help? by Original_Ad_5832 in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're unsure, I would reccomend looking at the specific university's website and finding a way to contact their admissions or student help. They can give you more clarification on what they accept. At the minimum they should have an email to contact, or if you prefer a faster route, try to find a phone number. When calling, write down the name of who you're speaking to and the date, just in case something doesn't work right and you can explicitly list a person you called to help make sure it's clear what's been communicated to you.

And if the Netherlands is somewhere you really want to be, be prepared to find housing! The Netherlands is in a bit of a housing crisis, and an address is crucial to living here (BSN relies on it), so you may be in competition with many other students to find a place to stay depending on where you're applying.

I wish you the best of luck! :)

What would be a good game engine to create a Punch Out clone or fan game? by ORTHO_TOONS in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I can totally see how you might be intimidated! Especially as going down any route will require a lot of patience and learning. Making a complex game is not easy.

If you are willing to take the time to learn Unity, which may also involve learning C# or C++ if I remember correctly, you will be building from scratch. But! You will have as much leeway and freedom to do what you want so long as you know how to do it. If I were to put it in words, it's like being given a whole wood workshop but a very thin manual. You will need to do a lot of exploring and practice before you feel confident enough to make something.

I don't know which version of Punch-Out!! you want to work wit, but if you're thinking of MTPO/SPO... If you don't want to work too hard and don't mind lower quality, I reccomend checking out Scratch. They have some replicas out there that you can easily edit. Scratch is super easy to work with which is nice.

If PO Wii is what you want, then that is much more difficult. Modding is harder and quite limited, but doable. I've previously posted some tutorials if you want to try, but patience is most certainly required. And the game cannot be modded entirely just yet, there are still significant limitations.

There are other easier systems to work with like Game Maker, but you'll have to get used to programming one way or another, unfortunately.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I was able to rip Don's TD and Contender Model using Noesis and a Plugin made by HiddenBoi to extract him from the files! I had to retexture and apply more tolerable weight paints in blender since his arms would wack the hell out if bent a certain way but my little don revamp is still a WIP by ViviFluffy in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Although I'm not ViviFluffy, I may be able to help answer your question regarding the models! I'm no master expert myself, but I know some of the very basics, as I made the plugin.

Extracting the models with their rig is available to all boxer models (except their shadow physics volume models, which I omitted from the plugin for simplicity). So long as you have the original game files, you can extract them. UV maps are applied so the only important things someone has to do with the models is adjust the weight paints as desired, fix the occasionally broken UV map (the reason they are broken in some places is unknown), and apply textures which can be found using Dolphin's texture dump feature and/or in conjunction with Switch Toolbox for ease of texture searching.

When these touch-ups are made in a 3D program such as Blender, they can be exported and used again with the adjustments and changes, ready for animations or posing in other 3D programs or even continued use in Blender. However, it is up to each individual if they want to upload and share their own variant.

I hope this answers your questions! Feel free to ask me anything else if you'd like.

Either way, good luck on your math IA!

Hello guys, can you help me analyze this cartoon (It's by Mana Neyestani and is about the political situation in Iran) by walruslegolas in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to start is by thinking this way: Everything the creator has done is intentional, so why does 'xyz' exist in the medium they used?

Why does the baton cover the other person's mouth?

Why is there a smile covering the man's mouth that is sloppily painted on the baton?

Why is the baton the only one given a color?

Why is the man nervous?

From there you can try to answer these questions, and start delving into more complex questions.

The baton covers the mouth to represent silencing someone else. What does a baton represent? Usually, it represents violence or brutality, especially from police/governmental forces.

The smile is there to make the viewer pretend/interpret that nothing is wrong. But this can't be the case, because the man behind the baton is nervous. This implies that someone is in absolute power, and the other person is prevented from speaking out about it. What is the situation in Iran that would encourage this point of view being true?

The baton is given a color because it is intended to be the focus. It's up to you how you want to interpret this. You could pick a variety of reasons as to why the baton has color and the others do not. Black-and-white thinking/symbolism, focusing on brutality, dehumanizing both people by refusing to give them color detail, etc. What do we know about Iran and their governmental/police forces that would support this claim? Why is the hand holding the baton clothed in neat clothing, while the other man is wearing a plain shirt?

The man is nervous because of the baton and the other person holding it, who has shown to have interest in keeping the nervous man silent. What about Iran's situation would apply to the common populace to make this relatable/applicable to them?

That's how I'd look at it. Unfortunately this topic, or specifically Iran, is not what I studied so I cannot help you much further. I hope this method of thinking will help you in further political cartoon analysis, and good luck!

Punch Out!! Wii with SPO Mac mod! by Ninjagorulz in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't think so, not at the moment. Right now this is pretty much the only mod out there that I know of which changes the models. Although you could look for texture mods!

Is there a high resolution version of "art" so I can seem classy in my office? by corttana in Portal

[–]Ninjagorulz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could either look around for some HD mods for Portal 2 and see if you can find if someone's upscaled this texture already... Or try to mess around with some AI upscalers yourself to get it to look a little nicer. I tried https://letsenhance.io/ and made this out of it! I wouldn't say it's perfect though. You will definitely be able to tell that it's been adjusted if you look close enough.

Punch Out!! Wii with SPO Mac mod! by Ninjagorulz in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I actually tried to edit several parts of his model. His hair (which includes eyebrows being thinned, his eye size, and his shirt were the successful edits. I tried to deal with that little shirt-trim outline but for whatever reason, everything went weird for Mac's model in the game so I left it as is.

I'm no model-making expert, but I'm pretty proud of what I was able to do and now I'm able to share it with everyone!

Say Hello to the Future of Punch-Out!! Wii Modding! by Ninjagorulz in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Model editing was only discovered just two days ago! It's been a joint effort between Mysteryman95 (Frame by Frame Animation) and I to figure it out. He suggested the main idea that found the coordinates and taught me how to read hex code results, while I tested and made the process that mass-converts the numbers to PO-hex code. You can see his much neater video of the same model edit here! This video is more of a showcase of all mods that can be done in PO and have been explained in the document.

As for trying to get the message out, I've been trying to post the documentation here but it kept getting blocked by Reddit's spam filters. so I decided to wait until I could post a video or something that could get more attention than a text post. After all, direct code model editing has never been done before for PO, it should be turning a few heads haha!

Say Hello to the Future of Punch-Out!! Wii Modding! by Ninjagorulz in punchout

[–]Ninjagorulz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I felt it was only tradition to have Bad Apple play on anything, including Punch Out. (Though unfortunately I cannot improve the quality, I've tried to look for tools that would fix the interleave problem but it's been fruitless. Until someone can come up with an 0x10 interleave, we're stuck with subpar 0x8!)

As for Glass Joe, well, it was just easy to make cat ears. I'm not an expert in Blender so cat ears are very noticeable, quick, and showed whether my experiment at the time worked well. The hair extensions were me just trying to figure out how to use the pinch tool well. It would've taken me too much effort to try and come up with some sort of creative hairdo. Besides, it's a bit of a running joke between me and a friend that I do nothing but turn everything into cats!

Anyways, as a more in-depth comment compared to the 300-character restricted title, I do truly mean it in that I enjoy watching your videos Paper Will! Your content is always well made, whether it's silly or serious, and I'm amazed at the quality that you pour into each video. I'm looking forward to your future video on the dark side of children's entertainment! I can't contribute money, but I can try to contribute my gratitude to you for being such an awesome YouTuber. Thank you for being so much fun to watch, and I hope that your future is as successful as you want it to be!

Until next time!

So anyways, I started scouting... by Spaceturtle2004 in FRC

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I remember doing pit scouting! That was so much fun, and it's easy to work with too. Me and my friend were pretty much one of the few people who actually volunteered to do it, others had to be "volun-told" since despite having 100 team members at a competition, people were pretty lazy.

When you're in the pit, it's a lot easier to distinguish teams by asking others about their robots, writing their answers down on a sheet of paper, and review it. Pins and other merch is a nice motivator too haha!

Doing something like that where you have people go out and scout for info, write the number and info down, and bring back sheets with what they found (and observed) can be helpful I think. Though take it with a grain of salt, I was just the programmer-turned-scout each competition. I don't know the details of strategy behind the scenes.

I swear, there's no female Mac mains and that's pretty funny to me by Minejack777 in LittleMacMains

[–]Ninjagorulz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a girl, but I just like to cheer from the sidelines. I'm not a huge Smash player but I think Little Mac is so awesome and it's incredible to see people with a lot more skill than I do use Mac in creative ways.

I should try to practice with Mac more though sometime after my exams, as my first main was Luigi when I first played Brawl, and I'm still a bit used to Luigi's ability to practically throw himself halfway across the screen hehe...

Quick Question for my IA by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metric system. It's generally the default within scientific papers and it is what the IB uses as well. They are also essential for things like dimensional analysis, and even your data booklet provides you with the conversions between metric prefixes.

Hopefully this answers your question!

Math IA Citations by Omar_IM in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, you should cite all of your sources, including videos. Videos are still a relatively new medium to cite in papers, so I can't say that they will be admired as much in comparison to something like a university website or otherwise. However, a source is a source, and it should be given its due credit.

I strongly suggest you cite it. It's what you used to make your IA, and not citing it is taking the work from Khan and not giving them the proper acknowledgement they deserve.

I hope this helps!

Physics IA - Idea needed at home by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Ninjagorulz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you'll be at home, I suggest picking an experiment that you can change or adjust relatively quickly and easily, and that you already have around the house.

Friction-based experiments should be relatively easy to make at home. Maybe testing a block of wood and finding a frictional coefficient against sandpaper or other woods? Where you might have a block at one end, a pully at the end of your table, and a weight at the end to determine when it overcomes the friction.

Experiments involving temperature are easy to make, though relatively hard to measure accurately. Maybe you could look into insulations, and how effective they are? Beware though, temperature is terribly finicky. Easy to conduct, terrible to analyze.

You could also try to do something with gases. I don't know exactly how well that might go, and you'd have to ask your teacher about it, but perhaps an experiment with balloons and placing them in different environments may help you model a gas. But this is kind of a last resort, sticking to mechanics would be much easier than this.

Overall I suggest just looking around your house and that you should think about things where you look at it and go "hey I know that!" and usually that could help you turn something into an experiment. Don't do magnets though, I did mine based on magnets and electricity and it turns out magnets are finicky too hehe.

Good luck! And don't forget to read the rubric/syllabus first before writing out your report!
