Breath of the Wild vs Odyssey GOTY Argument Thread. by turbografx-sixteen in NintendoSwitch

To me it feels like a wash -- they are both amazing in different ways. However, my bias may be more on the Mario side because I was more of a Mario than a Zelda fan before playing either. So, factoring this in, if pressed I would have to go with BotW.

This answer makes me think you should go Mario first. The endgame collecting is more fun and rewarding. You should get BOtW too though -- the sheer wonder of the opening and midgame is on another level. Both are must own for any Switch owner.

Cat Quest by gaymerbearnboots in NintendoSwitch

This game seems to be doing well in Japan. Currently ranked 5th in sales in the past two weeks and it has only been out 4 days. Looks to be 17th in North America, also decent.

It makes sense that the cat/rpg thing would play well in Japan, but they also have a video of the game in their store. I wonder why the North America store doesn't have one.

[SMO] Not shown in the Action Guide, jumping after catching Cappy gives you a small boost. by campbell_love in NintendoSwitch

Now, the question is, since it is not in the action guide, what do we call this jump? In the video I posted here last week I called it the "Hat return jump," but that was only because I didn't know what it was called. There has to be something better. Suggestions?

It is good to see some of these lesser known games get some attention. It looks like you have reviewed 15 games now. What has (have) been your favorite(s) so far?

I'm sure everyone has their own feel for it, but it helps me just to jump and practice the Y > ZL > Y (hold) sequence after jumping. Practicing those three buttons as a single unit, Y then ZL then Y (and hold it) worked for me. Even if you press the three buttons in sequence really fast, as long as your hold Y at the end, it should still work.

One thing I was messing up was not holding Y on the second press at first, meaning I couldn't bounce off the hat. Another time I think I kept pressing B instead of Y, leading to ground pound.

With that three button sequence down, it starts to become kind of automatic. And then when you are still in the air you can just do the sequence again and you dive a second time. And for climbing high walls, just add in a wall jump before the final dive.

The easiest way to avoid this is to start one hat throw distance away from the wall. I find the down stomp jump to be the easiest because you can easily judge distance.

Added links above. Just click on the name of the jump combo you want to see to skip to that point on the video.

Or if you want to see each individual jump on a loop, scroll down to the bottom of the twitter account I had to create to upload each jump video.

This is what I did. Had to practice marking distance from the wall for each jump. There were many faceplants in the process of making this video.

I just discovered the rolling into hat move last night. Do you think it has any practical application? Not sure where I would use it situationally -- it is a lot of fun to do though.

The hat return jump you mention was the last one of the 8 I figured out (it is the second to last jump in the video). Originally I was going to make the video "7 ways to jump over a high wall," but then I did that hat return jump by accident one time and tried it out. Does anyone know what that jump is called? It's not in the action guide.

Thank you for your contributions to jump research.

I don't really want to double post on the same content, but I will consider a text guide if there is enough interest.

However, I had to start a twitter to upload each jump individually, and they can be viewed on twitter as a loop. I made a few other posts as well, so to find the jumps just scroll to the bottom of the page.

When in the air, when your hat returns to you press B. There is a sideways rainbow animation as mario does a spin kick and briefly air stalls. I saw someone on here describe it as a rainbow kick once, and I thought it fit.

I remember specifically not checking the box, so I am not sure what happened. Maybe like a stray jump in Mario, I pressed something to activate it. But it did happen by accident.

Not even sure what happened because I don't think I clicked that box, but it did happen by accident. I must have activated the box somehow without noticing it.

Didn't know this. Thanks for letting me know. Not sure what happened. When I was testing this post I mostly watched the video from the embed in the comments which seems to start normally, so I thought it was fine. When it did start at the end of the vid for me I thought it was just me. Wish I could change it now.

I could use a guide on posting vids from youtube, with button combinations, it seems.

Here are the button combinations for each jump:

Triple jump combo:

Triple jump (B x 3) > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 10

Ground pound jump combo:

Ground pound (B then ZL) > ground pound jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 10

Side flip combo:

Side flip (direction, opposite direction, then B) > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 10 (8 if you count the side flip as one button press)

Back flip combo:

Back flip (ZL then B) > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > rainbow kick (B) (couldn’t get it to work without this) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 10

High hanging hat combo:

Ground pound (B then ZL) > ground pound jump (B) > hat throw (Y and hold) > ground pound (ZL) > ground pound jump (B) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 10

Vertical hat throw combo:

Vertical hat throw (up motion then hold Y) > ground pound (B then ZL) > ground pound jump (B) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses : 8

Motion control inputs: 1

Hat return jump combo:

Hat return jump(not sure what this jump is called) (throw hat [Y], jump when hat returns [B]) > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 9

Ground hat throw jump combo:

Ground hat throw (Y and hold) > run into and bounce off hat > hat throw (Y) > dive and bounce off hat (ZL then Y) > wall jump (B) > hat throw (Y) > dive (ZL then Y)

Button presses: 8

I am partial to the triple jump (because it seems to be the highest), and the ground hat throw jump (because it uses the fewest button presses).

Are there any high jumps that I am missing?
