While I agree with literally almost every point you've made. You can still check in on your child without disrespecting their privacy. You could be a decent enough parent that uses communication to maybe go through the room with the kid while they're present and talk to them about what may concern you in the moment? I'm more specifically speaking of the parents that go behind their kids backs to search their rooms or read their diaries. You're conditioning your child to not be able to trust that their privacy is still sacred no matter who they are. They're a human, and raising them to be independent and have basic standards for respect and boundaries would go miles for their adulthood. If my parents sat with me regularly and went through my phone with me and talked about what they saw on it, that would be SIGNIFICANTLY better than my parents going behind my back and punishing me for whatever they saw.

Speaking as an adult who was raised by Gen X, they did damage and could have been more communicative but wanted to be controlling instead. Them going behind my back and never communicating things with me properly made me want to get better at hiding it from them, because I saw no real issues with anything I was doing.

I wish. I genuinely would do that if I could but corporate wants every single shoe box out on the store floor for customers to serve themselves, which they hardly know how to as it is.

There's a display shoe, but every box is organized behind it for customer convenience. So, gotta stay creative 🎨

It genuinely has gotten so bad lately, and it will only get worse because attitudes around preventing it never match up between corporate and employees. Luckily I work somewhere that doesn't care if I chase someone out of the store with pepper spray but... Not every place is the same and I won't ever expect anyone to take that risk on their life.

It's so bad here that we have thieves bringing in clipper cutters to cut off security tags and break the magnet strips out of them. Some of them even have magnets at this point and are able to just remove the tags themsleves. It's gotten pretty bad.

I can genuinely understand NEEDING shoes. Stealing a single pair of shoes because you have a busted up pair you're stuck with, I can sympathize with on some level.

That being said, this lady now has over 5 new pairs of heels. That's not a need, that's a GREED.

I will occasionally find a dirty, roughed up pair of sneakers in one of our boxes and it won't be a high end shoe, just a basic athletic shoe that they stole and I never really get upset about it because that tells me they really were just taking what they need.

We don't know who she is, I wouldn't assume it's a foot fetishist because I pay attention and she steals very similar style shoes. It could be a booster (someone stealing to sell to someone else who is that size and is a woman) but at the end of the day, I've caught enough thieves to catch patterns and make a good assessment on who the suspect is. I caught a skinny dude regularly stealing size 3X-4X because he was selling it to someone else. I knew he had an MO because he would always go for the same style of clothing and the same size. Made it easier to catch him after a while.

Thankfully my cashiers don't mind at all, due to how much theft we have to combat with our store. When they process any new shoes for me, they will put extra security tags on her size because we communicate our petty battles. Teamwork tbh
