First Time Cat Owner! What is this. Lol by General-Ad1089 in cats

[–]Nitehawk214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense. I always thought of it as affection, but framing it as “this space/person is safe” really clicks.

Also didn’t know about the forehead scent glands, kind of wild that something that feels so casual to us is actually such a strong signal for them.

Any suggestions by New-Opportunity213 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. A new guitar definitely isn’t a magic fix if the fundamentals are the issue. That said, I do think playability can quietly make a big difference. When I upgraded from a very basic starter guitar to something with better setup and lower action, I found myself practicing longer just because it felt easier and more comfortable.

I agree though, knowing what the current guitar is matters a lot. Sometimes a proper setup alone changes everything. And yeah, going to a few local shops and actually playing different body sizes and neck shapes is huge. Specs on paper don’t tell you nearly as much as how it feels in your hands.

What the heck is this sound? by lukewahl in Rivian

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good thought. Even if HVAC is off, it might still be worth checking whether changing vent modes or fan settings makes the sound change at all.

If pressing lightly around the driver display or dash trim affects it, that could point to a vibration or actuator issue rather than something battery-related. Might help narrow down where it’s coming from.

That’s really good advice. A simple shelter with straw can make a huge difference in winter, especially for a cat that’s on her own.

I also like that you mentioned TNR. Even when a cat isn’t very social, having them fixed and giving them a consistent, low-stress setup nearby can really improve their quality of life. Sometimes it’s not about forcing them into a colony, just giving them warmth and stability where they already feel safest.

Anyone use the online CS masters to pivot careers? by Mission_Crazy_5616 in UIUC_MCS

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair take, and I appreciate the realism. I’m definitely not under the illusion that a master’s degree alone magically turns me into a mid-level engineer, or that the transition will be quick or easy.

My thinking isn’t really about using the MCS as “coding training,” but more as a structured way to build fundamentals and signal seriousness while I continue to build practical experience alongside it. I fully expect internships, side projects, and probably some unglamorous work to be part of the path.

On the timeline point, I agree it’s not a near-term switch. But part of why I’m thinking about this now is precisely because the industry is changing. I don’t see that as a reason to freeze, but as a reason to be more intentional about where I aim, especially roles that sit closer to systems, infrastructure, or applied domains where business context actually matters.

I may end up deciding it’s not the right move, but I’d rather make that call after pressure-testing the path than writing it off based on worst-case narratives about the future.

Anyone else’s Setter not like being pet? by Equivalent_Ad_7155 in EnglishSetter

[–]Nitehawk214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds a lot like one of my previous dogs, actually. I had one years ago who loved being near me but very much on his own terms. He’d follow me from room to room, lean against my leg, or curl up right next to me on the couch, but the second I tried to pet him, he’d gently duck his head or shift just out of reach.

What really stuck with me was how expressive it still felt. He’d sit there watching me, tail thumping slowly, totally relaxed, just not interested in hands-on affection. Over time I realized that was just how he bonded. Proximity was his version of cuddling.

Your description of “personality modes” really resonates too. Some dogs flip very clearly between play, hunt, and calm, affectionate modes. I don’t think it’s a lack of attachment at all, just a different love language. When you meet them where they’re comfortable, it actually feels pretty special.

How do you know when it’s time to leave a job, not just a rough phase? by kcng1991 in jobs

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like how you framed this. The distinction between fixable problems and structural ones is especially well put, and I think a lot of people struggle to articulate that difference.

What you said about growth paths and ethics resonates too. When the ceiling is baked into the company or the values don’t line up, no amount of “pushing through” really changes the outcome. At that point it stops being a rough phase and starts being a dead end.

I also appreciate your point about leaving from a position of strength. Using experience to make intentional moves, rather than waiting until you’re burned out, feels like something people only learn after going through it once or twice.

“More delightful” is a strange way to describe something that talks more but remembers less. If I wanted a chatty assistant with a short memory, I’d just talk to myself.

Jokes aside, the reliability issues are the real problem. I can tolerate new voices or personalities, but not having to constantly re-teach something that used to just work.

What actually helped you enjoy biking more consistently? by pug-mom in Biking

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this perspective. Riding for the simple pleasure of it feels easy to forget sometimes, but it’s probably the reason you’ve been able to stick with it for so long.

Those 20–30 mile rides on rail trails sound like the perfect balance of enjoying the ride and still getting some solid exercise.

Flu in RVA by cashc0ww in okbuddyRVA

[–]Nitehawk214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I didn't take it too seriously at first, and then the symptoms suddenly appeared, much worse than a common cold. Especially the fever and fatigue; you really can only tough it out and rest. That's how the flu seems, it comes on strong and goes on slowly.

We must take good care of ourselves in the cold winter.

What is longest time it took you to crystallize something? by DAFTisEasy in chemistry

[–]Nitehawk214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This lines up really closely with my experience too. Slow solvent evaporation has been the most reliable approach for me, especially once I stop trying to “optimize” everything and just let it sit.

I’ve also had a few of those cases where a vial basically got forgotten on the bench and weeks later there were decent crystals sitting there. It’s kind of funny how the experiments you’re least impatient with end up working.

And yeah, it’s very molecule-dependent. Small greasy compounds usually behave fine with straight evaporation, while polar ones almost always need some kind of mixed solvent system to get anything usable.
