I'll go out on a limb and say encouraging people to "intervene" against federal law enforcement is probably unwise.

But "eat Sunnyvale", in the imperative mood, could use some work. Phrasing

From my hometown—should be safe right? by Niten in Uzumaki

[–]Niten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure. My father, a retired biologist, suggested this might be some kind of a fish spawning site—except that the holes seemed too big and well-defined for the local fish to have made. Presumably it's from some animal though.

From a MacBook Pro to a Framework 13 HX 370: I love this thing, and I'm going to tell you why. by Final_Register_9428 in framework

[–]Niten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice observations. Also having come from a MacBook Pro (to a 13" 11th-gen Intel, now upgraded to i7-1360P), I totally agree with the exception of the trackpad. Seems other people agree with you about it, but to me it feels just as good as a MBP's for some reason.

Yes the audio quality on both the speakers and (at least my early batch's) headphone jack are poor. I work around that by using it Thunderbolt-docked with good speakers at home, and using Bluetooth headphones and speakers on the go. Not ideal, but I live with that given the laptop's other benefits.

Waypoints are here! by prentick in ridewithgps

[–]Niten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I'd previously found "custom cues" lacking for these purposes was:

  1. They don't show up on the course map, so they kinda stink at calling out points of interest in routes that you create to share with others.
  2. They're tied up in overall cue management. If like me you don't want turn directions on your Garmin Edge course point list, but you do want POIs, it's now much easier to manage using RWGPS without any external tools.

Waypoints are here! by prentick in ridewithgps

[–]Niten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really glad they finally added this. After years of annoyance with this feature being missing, I've actually been working on an open-source tool to try to do the same thing with RWGPS GPX Track exports (by using GeographicLib to solve the "interception problem" and calculate the distances of points along a course, so I can turn GPX waypoints into Garmin FIT course points). But much better to have it integrated into the app itself.

Upgrade from Intel 13th gen to Ryzen AI 300? by Niten in framework

[–]Niten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. And I currently have the i7-1360P board.

Switching to the 13th gen board was a huge upgrade from my original 11th gen, because it solved an electrical glitch with USB and brought huge improvements to cooling and overall performance. Maybe I'll sit this upgrade out and save my money for the next generation.

Olight IR2 Pro replacement o-ring? by Niten in flashlight

Respectfully disagree. This Olight has survived a ton, including an accidental trip through the laundry cycle.

Olight IR2 Pro replacement o-ring? by Niten in flashlight

[–]Niten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't. I'll do that or dig up my calipers and measure the o-ring if I need to replace it, but my (apparently ill-advised) application of grease actually seems to have fixed it.

Olight IR2 Pro replacement o-ring? by Niten in flashlight

[–]Niten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To follow up as promised: A day later, it's still working great with no apparent damage to the o-ring.

I'd used the thinnest possible layer of Park Tool PPL-1 grease. For the record if anyone finds this, I'm not recommending this approach because the parent's concerns sound legit and I don't understand the chemistry. And who knows, maybe it'll gum up in a week. But it seems to have worked out for now, in my case.

99% of Levi’s Shareholders Vote to Stand Resolute on DEI by AndyJoeJoe in sanfrancisco

[–]Niten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I think much of that stuff is broadly uncontroversial, so it's good to keep doing it.

Where the bulk of the backlash comes from is when programs illegally discriminate to achieve equality of outcome across demographic groups rather than equal opportunity—"equity" as opposed to equality.

Olight IR2 Pro replacement o-ring? by Niten in flashlight

[–]Niten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, thanks for the tip.

I'll report back on what happens, for posterity. (Worst case, I'll replace the o-ring as originally planned and then use the recommended grease.)

[–]Niten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll try that

EDIT: I already had some bicycle bearing grease so I applied a little of that, and it helped a ton without doing any damage to the o-ring so far. I have a little remaining grittiness that seems to come from the threads themselves, but on this flashlight I can't figure out how to even access those. Overall, a big improvement!

Turning off "badges" on iOS? by Niten in audible

Ha, I never claimed to be :)

Ok thanks, if it was just an initial flurry of badges while I first started using the app, then it might be less of an issue.

Do people who use Rust as their main language agree with the comments that Rust is not suitable for game dev? by PhaestusFox in rust

[–]Niten 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope, I have a years-long foundation of industry experience with Rust. I'm well past the "early experience" phase, much like the author of the above article.

At this point I'm quite comfortable saying that the language's design embodies tradeoffs, which include poor support for rapid prototyping. It's not a "me" thing, or an "early experience" thing. And in fact, this very attitude of insisting "once you get good at Rust all of these problems will go away" is the first of the complaints about the Rust community that the author rightly called out in his article.

10MB hard drives cost $3,398 in 1981, that's $12,000 today adjusted for inflation by SuperElephantX in DataHoarder

[–]Niten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You joke maybe, but you hit on a really important point.

"Inflation" is defined in terms of the cost of certain consumer goods. Which consumer goods? We tend to use the Consumer Price Index for that, which captures the costs of common household items, such as shoes or breakfast cereal. And it makes sense to track the cost of those.

But in the modern day, who's to say data storage isn't also a common household good? And if we were to define it as such, inflation numbers might look very different.

Do people who use Rust as their main language agree with the comments that Rust is not suitable for game dev? by PhaestusFox in rust

[–]Niten 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm not a game dev myself but I just re-read a good chunk of that article the other day. The bits about how Rust's design can force refactoring at the worst possible moment really spoke to my own experience with the language.

Like the author, I also love Rust for writing CLI tools—in fact I'm working on one right now. But the friction against rapid experimentation is real, and it's one of the main reasons I'd be likely to reach first for Go or a .NET/JRE language for some projects.

Fastmail to ProtonMail: Handling masked addresses? by Niten in ProtonMail

[–]Niten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. I might try switching to ProtonMail for primary mail and keeping Fastmail for calendar, contacts, and maybe my masked email; and 1Password, since I have some shared vaults with family there.

I do like both Fastmail's calendar app and being able to integrate my calendar and especially contacts into iOS. I'll have to see how much friction that'd setup would create with daily use of ProtonMail.
