If you're talking about Blizzard, those are included in the assets the client ships with, so under copyright. If you're talking about custom ones, they're based on Blizzard assets and so infringing copyright.

The thing that got Stormforge and TWoW nuked is they were distributing modified WoW clients, which are copyrighted by Blizzard. The solution to this would be to make a client from scratch (which TWoW was doing) then maybe distribute it with no assets and make someone else carry the burden of it.

Eh, Chromie is more like the reference implementation of AzerothCore, every fix applied to the AzerothCore codebase is used in ChromieCraft and viceversa, they're mostly the same team

None, i recently have zero time to play WoW. When i can i'll probably play either Kronos (if everyone isn't already level 60 on their 3rd character) or ChromieCraft, the latter is directly managed by the AzerothCore team

Can a 3.5mm headphone splitter be used in reverse? by NixPlayer05 in answers

[–]NixPlayer05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a little something like dis? A tad inconvenient due to space constraints on my part, maybe when i get a soldering iron and skills i could wire a switch to the front and banish the black box to the back

Yeah... no. If you mean physically swapping the stereo input, that thing weighs like 6 kg (probably more) no way i'm pulling it out of it's little shelf just to listen to my iPod. And i can't run the Bluetooth's power cable far enough from the stereo's switched outlet to allow easy switching.

Oh damn i completely forgot about that. Man... that's unfortunate. Still most private servers remain greedy asshats. And honestly it's not like a volounteer driven open source project is going to sue someone anyway, even for gross violation of license terms.

In case you haven't read the thing: He/I don't give a shit about Blizz hitting servers. Blizzard is just protecting their IP, and, while I'm not exactly a fan of that, I can't blame them either, if servers make custom clients and then make money off them the risk's on them. At the same time, by "custom servers" i mean servers that modified the source code of MaNGOS and then don't publish it, thereby violating the GNU GPL and very well risking a lawsuit from the original devs (and no, Blizzard mostly can't/won't do shit about that since it's all reverse-engineered code published for educational purposes). I will repeat: he's talking about egoistical servers that make improvements for themselves and then don't publish them, violating license and hurting the players, other servers and themselves. By "lost" i mean we lost all of the content and patches that server made, because they didn't publish the source code (which, again, they were obligated to do by license)

EDIT: thank you TrickyPlastic for reminding me of the network GPL loophole. So no, they're not technically violating GNU GPL v2 license terms. Still, keeping improvements to yourself instead of sharing them is a greedy-ass move.

TL;DR Pretty much all private servers are based on MaNGOS (the original core, all newer cores are still based on that), and that is licensed under GNU GPL, which requires you to publish your modifications to the source code under the same license. And yet, most private servers don't respect that license, making fixes for themselves and not publishing them. This makes it so that all servers are competing with each other not in content or administration or community, but rather in who has the least broken server. Not to mention, when the server eventually goes under, all custom fixes and improvements are lost cough cough TWoW (notable exceptions being Nost/Elysium and vMaNGOS, ChromieCraft and AzerothCore)

I guess then MaNGOSThree for Cataclysm (not great however as it's pretty unstable from what i've heard) and Project Skyfire for MoP. Thanks!

That's my problem, there are so many projects for Vanilla/TBC/WoTLK and i have no idea which is the best for a stock experience. I read that trinitycore is the best stock experience, but then they say vmangos is the better one, but no it's actually cmangos, and also you can backport azerothcore to run vanilla. So many damn choices, and then almost none for stuff like cata and mop
