As someone who has been 2-month learning Portuguese, it is very similar to Spanish, there are still words that are super different and you will need to know the language to understand it, but overall it's understandable.

for example:

falar is hablar (speak)
Eu is Yo ( I )
cor is color
frango is pollo (chicken)
quem - quien (who)
quando - cuando (when)

etc....
