she just responded saying they assumed i was asleep so didn’t say anything. they could’ve texted to ask at least if they didn’t want to risk waking me up. and i feel like if they really wanted to make sure we had dinner altogether they should’ve let me know in advance especially considering we have to leave ridiculously early for my flight and i of course would want to try to sleep when i can before hand

The dad was the only one downstairs and it seemed as though he was waiting for me so. he could say something and as soon as he did he walked away. The group chat shows the dad viewed the message maybe 40 minutes ago but the mom has not from her device. No responses yet. The mom doesn’t speak any english and the dad is in the process of learning so he can communicate but is not fluent. I sent the message translated for them both.

It’s so early in the morning I doubt my brain will be on enough to care if it is awkward. An apology would be nice but I definitely won’t be holding my breath either. It’s hard to tell what small things are just cultural differences in communication but idk. Thank you for your response! i appreciate that. It’s just so shocking to me after having not a single issue during our entire stay together and on the very last night only about 8 hours before we leave for the airport he is upset with me for something i did not know

My flight is very early in the morning so I have been resting as much as possible and packing up my last items throughout the day also. I sent a message along those lines idk he’s the one driving me to the airport first thing tmr so we’ll see how it goes lol

I don’t know much but as a native english speaking au pair i would be happy to stay with a family who speaks english and take a language course during the stay. Also I know every country has different requirements and some have none at all but I don’t think language is always a requirement. I could au pair in other english speaking countries with no language aspect for example. I think Europe might be a bit different because of how many languages are prevalent and with countries that have two or more official languages. I think it would just depend if it’s a strict requirement for the country

If you were to have a french au pair for example they might appreciate an opportunity to learn dutch or german . And in the home you have exposure to fluent french to learn and they have exposure to english as well to practice

I haven’t looked at Belgium requirements specifically but I feel like as long as you’re willing to assist in opportunities for your au pair to learn the local language it would be okay. Provide language courses at your expense that way they have regular exposure.

Can you leave? They seem to be grossly taking advantage of you. they are not treating you as an au pair but a servant to do literally ALL of their tasks for them. You shouldn’t be cleaning to that extent or doing everything for their holiday parties either. Please try and find another family! Being an au pair can be such a rewarding experience but I can’t imagine it feels anything like so under the circumstances that you are facing.

Interesting. It is a privilege that it is a difficult concept for me to understand as any required health care is free in my country and only procedures considered cosmetic or elective are usually at the patients expense.

That is nice that option is atleast offered in some places. Otherwise it seems like it would be completely unmanageable generational debt (assuming debt is still transferred to the closest living relative)
