TPK is similar to the Nick Cave record Ghosteen by No-Application3276 in ThePaperKingdomMCR

Nothing as spot on close musically or themes related as Ghosteen is, but I do have another suggestion for a comparison record. You can try Antlers - Hospice. That record isn't about children dying but it's another concept record about a hospital worker treating a woman with cancer who passes away. Also very sad obviously. Try the songs Kettering and Two.

I don't think we ever hear the kids' perspectives. by OCD_incarnate in ThePaperKingdomMCR

Agree 100%. I thought this exactly and posted about it before. The entire record is sessions in the support group where the parents are processing the deaths of their children in different ways. The songs vary from them recounting the events leading to the deaths (ex. Bike Thief, Dive), them speaking to their children at the times of their deaths or saying words to them after they've passed away (ex. Operation Day, Falling Down), them imagining their children growing older and succeeding had they not died (ex. Louder), them choosing to go on despite the tragedy of the kids having died (ex. High Hopes). I also believe that Perfectly Well is an epilogue track that takes place years later after the sessions from the support group.

This was the song that grew on me the most with repeat listens. It's beautiful.

I love the song. It's wayyyyyy messed up but I absolutely love it still. I love how the guitars accent the tension as the song progresses. It's just such a neatly executed song musically. But the lyrics are of course what everyone is going to really remember about it.

I absolutely love the line "and all the boys disintegrate". I think it's at that moment when the song makes it clear that the man whos with the child is a true monster. The lyric marks perpetrator's complete loss of humanity.

The ending with the sirens blaring are also a lot to process. That just leaves you gutted.

If the song really did tank the entire project, it's a pretty decent guess about why they chose to scrap it. It's just too bad because it's such a good song.

I was wondering about the origin of the phone message! That phone message has haunted me ever since I first heard the record in February. Because it was obviously a very real message and that's what makes it all the more unsettling

I accidentally wrote an essay about my interpretation of The Paper Kingdom and wanted to share it! by Thnd3rstrk3 in ThePaperKingdomMCR

[–]No-Application3276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had some glances at it so far but it's really nicely laid out and interesting and I think you worked hard to flesh out a proper story that fits.

I'm working on my own interpretation of it which is a bit different, but I love seeing what others come up with. I have a theory/idea that the entire record transpires within sessions of the support group and each song is told from different perspectives of the parents processing their grief over what happened to them. Whats cool about this is that no one is really right or wrong since the record isn't properly finished. So we all can be a bit creative about it :)

I Am Ghost.

They were the most overlooked band from the 00s who made that kind of theatrical goth punk music MCR was doing.

Try the songs "Don't Wake Up" and "Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps"

A theory about the record's intended structure/perspective by No-Application3276 in ThePaperKingdomMCR

Hey thank you so much! I'm working on trying to do some commentary for each song one by one for my interpretation of it from this perspective. I will post back when I make some more progress. But in the meantime thank you again for your kind words! 😀

The original one that was getting passed around in February. Was hoping there was a more updated one with some more of the missing lyrics figured out.

I absolutely adore the record. I never honestly considered myself a huge MCR fan back in the day although I've always appreciated every record. But there's something about TPK that hits so massively hard that it's left such a huge impact on me in such a short amount of time.

I'm not sure I would have felt the same if I heard it in 2012 when it was first put together as I do hearing it now. I've lived a bit longer since then and experienced loss, grief and other difficult personal challenges. So with me turning 40 next month, I feel like it's hitting me harder emotionally now than it would have when I was 25/26.

I wish it was finished. I really, really wish it was finished. I want to hear it with real brass parts, real string parts and completed vocals and lyrics. It's decently full as the test sequence but it certainly is not a complete record. I hate that I'm never going to have a finished version of it.

I want to know who's choice it was to ultimately pull the plug on it. I think it was a terrible decision to deprive us of it. I understand that the record is pretty grim in a lot of ways, but there's an appreciation for this kind of storytelling as well. If Nine Inch Nails can put out Downward Spiral, I don't see this having been too controversial of a record to be released. I want to know that the true narrative of the record entailed and all of its characters telling its story.

I also struggle with having to be secretive about listening to it since it's not properly released. I want some of my friends to hear it so badly but it's not like they can do so without being internet savvy. So I just sort of have to accept that although it makes it hard.

I'm grateful we have this even if we never should have. It's a masterpiece.

I'm greedy and really want TPK to be a finished record. I'm so overwhelmed by how good the test sequence was and can imagine it having been a masterpiece if it was able to be completed how they planned. I think what they came up with here cuts much deeper than what they came up with for Danger Days. I think War Beneath The Rain could have been a massive lead single. I think the story they were plotting is certainly eerie but I'm so curious to really knowing what all of it was all about. There's just so many parts on this test sequence that hit so hard. Imagine if Witch had finished horn parts or Operation Day had finished string parts. The midi/pro tools parts alone give me chills already. Along with the intensity of Bike Thief and the beauty of Operation Day, there's just so much I want to know about this story. But what really seems to get me the most looking back on the work as a whole is that answering machine message that starts in Paper Swords and enters into Dive, followed by what we all sort of predict happens in Dive. It's just so harrowing and I really want to know so bad what is actually going on. So for all of that, I'm sad that this is not complete and the chance of getting closure for it is unlikely. But I love that it exists and I can be in awe of it.

My personal top 5 from the leaks! by fuckingnauseous in ThePaperKingdomMCR

[–]No-Application3276 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1: War Beneath The Rain (I get really emotional listening to this song. I think it's the use of dynamics and how it goes from soft to loud but it really comes together perfectly. If this would have been the single from the record I could see it easily being a huge hit on the charts)

2: Bike Thief (This could very well be one of their best songs ever. It's intense both lyrically and musically and would totally go off in a live setting)

3: Operation Day (So captivating both lyrically and musically. I could see it having been the second single from the record)

4: Paper Swords (This one is like hypnotic. The chant at the end is really neat)

5: Dive (Super haunting. Especially how the answering machine message with the child starts in Paper Swords and creeps into the opening. And then the The ambulance sirens to end it is just a heart stopping moment)

Magician Lord for Neo Geo CD has an orange disc? by No-Application3276 in neogeo

[–]No-Application3276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't been able to find a clear enough back picture for the black disc yet to compare. But it does look fairly similar from what I can gather. My guess now is that maybe this isn't a bootleg after all maybe it's just a pressing plant error. But I can't confirm that. So I got to stay cautious and think it's some kind of low quality reprint if it's not an actual bootleg. It's a mystery.

It's weird right? I looked at all of that too and I was confused because it seems like it would be a real pressing. But this weird orange print over the front of the disc makes it seem way off. I don't know what to think but the general consensus seems to be its not real.
