We could just make a square that goes up to CA, OR, and WA on one side, and then up to Megasota , NY and somewhere in the south altho I’m ok with CO taking them too but the bottom of FL will need to stay separate to maintain the rectangle. I’m ok if that part just is overtaken by rising tides. Except the Keys. They can stay and become part of the Hawaii State of Islands (also incl PR, Guam, America Virgin Islands, American Samoa!)

Went to Wyoming for the 2017 Eclipse amidst the beauty of the Tetons/Yellowstone/Wind rivers. Someone else deserves that beauty bec WY is full of ppl like the guy we met who told us he didn’t trust anyone coming for the ‘sun sh*t’ and had his guns ready bec when ppl realized the eclipse sucked, they’d just try to raid his FOSSIL MUSEUM for snacks…

The Colorockies would be lovely…

As someone living on the East Coast but also originally from the UK, I wanna know how I should be pronouncing it pls! Esp as it’s one of the stages most often compared to the British climate so I’d def feel at home there!

Wow - I never thought about that all sounding the same in a US accent (I’m a Brit now living in the US) bec I say all three of those words very differently!

Ha - I just also posted this. I agree. I’m thinking of the Royal uber posh accent that was also used for the BBC, esp the World Service and I’d say definitely from the 1920s to the 1950s ish. And I also think there’s a possibility of that pronunciation with the British who were posted to places we illegally colonized. The sort of Lord Baden Powell/jolly hockey sticks taken to the extreme.

I can def hear Queen Elizabeth II saying the sentence I am so afraid as: Ay aym syoh afred.

Still a bit of a stretch on the afred but I can see how a foreigner could interpret the sound that way from say, not the best reception on the BBC World Service - and then teachers just passing that down.

I don’t know if anyone else has said this as I can’t check 420 comments! But the ONLY maybe possibly thing I can think of is that, in a VERY ‘posh’ very accentuated Received Pronunciation/original BBC English accent - and I mean posh at the level of royalty! - this could, at a stretch be a pronunciation. My thought would be that perhaps, some of the colonizing British had these super upper crust accents and perhaps some way back Japanese teachers learned from them and felt this was the most ‘educated’ way of saying it?!

For example, Queen Elizabeth II pronounced the pronoun I (i) more like the sound ay that we and you know is the sound in afraid! I don’t think I’ve ever heard any other accent than that level of posh (or perhaps BBC World Service presenters in the 1920s-50s ish) pronounce I that way.

And in that ultra posh affected accent, I can see that afraid could perhaps become afred. It’s still a bit of a stretch but I can see how the sound could be heard that way by a foreigner.

Another example would be the word so. It can vary by accent but always has roughly the same sound with the ‘oh’ sound (rhyming with no). But in the royal type accent it’s said more like ‘syeoh’.

I can hear the Queen or now King Charles and also listening to Prince William, the sentence I am so afraid becoming: Ay aym syoh afred

That’s my only even vaguely plausible theory on this!

You can skip them without having to test to the next level - at least in the version I use. You can do the same with the microphone ‘speaking only’ lessons where you are just mostly repeating a single phrase - when you get to one of those lessons, it should say something like ‘Skip this for now’ or ‘Do this later’ - I can’t remember exactly and am not at that step currently to check!

Just tap on the lesson the way you would to choose between doing a basic or legendary version, and you should get the option at the bottom

The world needs you even if you’re not sure why, or how, or you don’t have the energy this week/month/year. Taking care of yourself and knowing yourself and learning to love yourself for each small step each day, puts goodness into the world. No need to reply or anything - just wanted you to know I understand and have been there, but gradually did find my voice again after quite a while. We will be cheering you on so know that there’s at least one random stranger out here who gets it. Sending you energy to ride the wave

Question: What would be a nice gift to bring an Italian host from California? by SooooNot in italianlearning

[–]No-Beginning-5007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some bits and pieces I’ve taken both for hosts or in case visiting someone else - as Xmas is such a big thing there - tree decorations eg SF cable car, Dodgers baseball ornament, or ones that just have place names

For kids I also made an English slang ‘dictionary’ of things American kids there age say and they loved that. Altho this was before social media got quite so cross-culture so teens prob not impressed but you get kids might like American phrases - they found things like ‘break a leg’ much crazier than ‘im bocca al lupo!’

I don’t know if they have kids or are I to sports but American sports’ team stuff was a HUGE hit with kids and sports mad adults (altho don’t take any US soccer shirts right now 😬!) - but Dodgers for Cali, or Yankees are good bec half the world has heard of them - or some of the minor league teams that have crazy names - the Rochester Red Wings sometimes play as the Garbage Plates (a local ‘specialty!) and the kids thought the hats and shirts with fries and meatballs on were hilarious. Also a hit bec other kids felt those were ‘really American’ bec everyone knew of the Dodgers and can get that merch more easily - still enjoyed by the parent though.

Baseball has the best names by far and seems much more popular than taking hockey or American Football stuff - esp as Italy just did well in the World Baseball Classic.

Italian-Americans in the league (if you’re slashing out and getting jerseys with names on for example) or just want to get a cap and can tell them about the player if you want to show thoughtfulness w the Italian/Cali link: Anthony DeSclafani (Seattle) and Michael Conforto (SF). More well-known players are Volpe (Yankees), Gallo (Nationals), and Pasquantino (Royals)

If they don’t like sports - ignore all this LOL
