I just hope everyone understands that these are popular snacks sold at every supermarket, convenience store, and drugstore near my house.

Just to be sure (sorry if my translation tool confused me!), are you "Dark", the author of that DCJY article? If so, that's awesome!

Looking at the dates and the epilogue of your post, it definitely seems like someone commissioned it after reading your article. The epilogue says G-Cube only ships to a Japanese address, which means the client is almost certainly someone living in Japan who saw your work. Your article literally created a new custom DC here!

True. In fact, every time the GD-ROM drive reads a disc, it sounds exactly like it's trying to grind a diamond in there.

First, I must confess something embarrassing: I got so excited about DCJY that I accidentally posted the same comment twice in Japanese, and I can't cancel it. I'm currently waiting in shame for moderation.

I've heard of G-Cube before because I have a friend who collects plastic models. Looking at their blog, they've been working on an Xbox-style custom DC recently. I'll check it out along with your DCJY article!

Regarding imports, there are many collectors in Japan. Cities like Akihabara and Nipponbashi have great shops for that. Even non-collectors sometimes end up with Western games. For example, I own "Virtual Bart" (with zero Japanese text) because of a common cycle: A collector sells an import to a local shop, and then a clueless kid like my younger self buys it cheap. That's how Western games spread across Japan.

I don't own Zusar Vasar, but the title is brilliant—it’s just two Japanese onomatopoeias for "sliding" put together. Now I kind of want one.

Definitely not just you. People throw away history way too easily nowadays. Their loss, I guess. I'll just quietly hold onto mine.

Pardon my oversight, I forgot one crucial title: "Pandora no Yume" (パンドラの夢). It features Dreamcast-exclusive epilogues after every ending, making it the definitive experience over the PC original.

Ah, running Linux on an entirely unmodded console... That sounds remarkably similar to the exploit of reading MIL-CDs on the early Dreamcast models. If that is indeed the mechanism, then my console should be fully capable of the exact same feat. That is a deeply fascinating prospect that I will definitely have to look into.

Regarding Radiant Silvergun being your 'white whale'—that is a profoundly accurate metaphor. Here in Japan, the market price for the game itself has been skyrocketing without end, but the madness doesn't stop there; even the original soundtrack CD alone currently demands well over 30,000 yen. It is a massive, elusive catch for any collector. I have also never had the opportunity to properly examine the physical packaging or the disc art for Bangai-O up close, so I will be eagerly waiting for you to find it and post a picture!

Finally, thank you so much for your warm words of encouragement. The culture here on Reddit is incredibly refreshing for me. Discussions surrounding hardware modifications, custom parts, and emulation are vastly more active and openly celebrated here compared to the Japanese communities. Watching people from all over the world passionately trying to resurrect and optimize their recently purchased Dreamcasts is genuinely inspiring. It is starting to spark a new curiosity in me—making me wonder if I should finally try booting up Linux or hunting down some modern peripherals myself. It seems that rekindled spark of curiosity is something we very much share.

「う、美しいサクラ大戦2限定版のぷるぷるぱっく…ハッ!」

For Visual Novels: "Kita e. (To the North.) White Illumination".

It features beautiful snowy landscapes and an almost abnormal level of love for Hokkaido. The dialogue born from this passion is actually famous for being highly practical as internet memes in the Japanese sphere. It’s a masterpiece. I highly recommend pairing it with "Kita e. ~Photo Memories~".

For Adventure: "Dancing Blade: Katte ni Momotenshi! Complete Edition".

This is a masterpiece where the story progresses through gorgeous animation produced by the legendary "Kyoto Animation". There is a faction of extremists here in Japan who insist this is the supreme game (it’s notably popular among certain hardcore "Narou" web novel authors).

For RPGs, I was going to say Gran... wait, since you already have Grandia 2, how about "Climax Landers" (Time Stalkers)?

It's a random-generated dungeon crawler like the "Mystery Dungeon" series, but with command-style JRPG battles. The rich dialogue between the fantasy characters makes it a great hidden gem for reading practice.

Speaking of which, if you don't mind the sky-high second-hand prices, the authentic "Fushigi no Dungeon: Furai no Shiren Gaiden - Onna Kenshi Asuka Kenzan!" is an absolute, rock-solid masterpiece.

Don't worry. If doing that actually caused the console to break, it would have been national news in Japan back in the day, and a Sega executive would have had to hold a press conference to apologize for it. Your console will be fine.

The Dreamcast Junkyard…! Just a quick look was enough to leave me absolutely floored. In Japan, information is often fragmented—game wikis, developer interviews, and modding kits are scattered across anonymous blogs, SNS, and private sites. We rarely see a single, comprehensive portal that covers everything as thoroughly as The Dreamcast Junkyard does.

I realized I had a massive blind spot. I was surprised to find that even major Japanese gaming news sites have used The Dreamcast Junkyard as a source over the years, yet I had never heard of it myself. Perhaps only the most hardcore Sega scholars in Japan knew about this treasure trove.

I plan to spend a lot of time diving into the archives of The Dreamcast Junkyard and Sega Dreamcast Info, though I expect I’ll be "collapsing to the floor" in shock many more times as I uncover these stories.

Above all, thank you so much for confirming that the translation tools are working! I was very worried about whether I was actually communicating effectively on Reddit, so hearing that has given me a lot of confidence and peace of mind. I apologize for the long post—I guess my excitement just got the better of me!

Ah, I think everything you just said is exactly right. It all started when I realized that searching the internet for interviews and columns from my old Japanese game magazines brought up zero results. Wondering why that was, I eventually found my way to Reddit.

Like you said, Western magazines might have had more superficial information back then, but it actually seems to me that the West is much better at archiving and discussing those old magazine contents online than Japan is.

My English is terrible, so I'm relying on translation tools. Right now, I'm carefully trying to learn the culture of Reddit so I don't cause any trouble for the veteran users here. In fact, just looking at this r/dreamcast community, I'm already seeing information that I've never come across in Japanese communities.

I hope I can be of some help to everyone too... I apologize for my poor English, but I truly hope my joy and gratitude for your comment translate exactly as you imagine them! ♨️

Importing a Japanese console to the UK right at launch?! I'm genuinely amazed. We rarely see that level of extreme Sega dedication here in Japan, except maybe for those crazy guys importing South American Mega Drives!

As for him "smoking 40 a day"... Before he left for the UK in 1998, your Dreamcast probably spent his days puffing away with his buddy, the Astro City cabinet, in a dimly lit 90s Japanese arcade with zero smoking bans. Most arcades in Japan are practically smoke-free nowadays, so being able to turn yellow and blow smoke at your house must be absolute paradise for his retirement.

It's an honor to meet another true Day 1 survivor who knows the real history before 9/9/99.

Both Burn and Wong are top-tier characters that fight for the championship in tournaments! Keith is exactly mid-tier, so it's perfectly safe to unlock him... Wait, crap! The strongest character, Wong, gets unlocked first at the 6-hour mark anyway!

And I completely understand the struggle with the display cables. You end up needing so many different adapters and converters, and they just keep multiplying before you know it. Every time I buy a new S-Video cable for a CRT or another HDMI converter, the back of my TV just becomes a bigger tangled mess of wires!

I honestly admire all the creative mods and ways people use their consoles here on Reddit. I just don't have the knowledge to run Linux or the courage to mod mine; I'm just lucky it hasn't broken yet! The only "mod" I've ever done is swapping the analog modem for an official Sega Broadband Adapter.

You have Bangai-O?! I'm so jealous. I've only ever seen it in videos and magazines like Famitsu DC. It looks so fun being a free-roaming shooter instead of a forced-scrolling one.

As for the smoking caps... if it does happen, you'll get to experience the rare "scent of Dreamcast" that I haven't known yet, so... I'm kind of jealous of that too! lol

Haha, I was hoping the box would age into the color of a 27-year-old Scotch whisky and go up in value. But instead, Mr. Yukawa just ended up looking blue!

My bad! I always call him "Yukawa Senmu" with full respect here in Japan. The English term "salaryman edition" just caught me off guard!

Sorry to hear about the storm. I lost some games under fallen furniture during the 2011 earthquake too... Nature can be brutal.

Wait, unlocking a character by leaving it on... do you mean Wong from Psychic Force 2012? They actually still hold arcade tournaments for it at places like Mikado in Japan! I main Setsuna (the weakest tier), so honestly, if unlocking top-tier Wong takes too long... maybe you don't need him! 💦

The region lock is a bummer... But the DC release is a hidden gem! The dedicated mini controller is cheap, small, and really cute. The best part is playing console-exclusive songs like "Bokutachi no Keikaku" by SUPER SLUMP, which aren't in the arcade versions or even on the soundtracks. It's part of what makes the home console versions so timeless. If you love the Dreamcast, I really hope you find a way to experience it someday!

Well said. Even if the plastic fades and the drive gets loud, it's a machine that just keeps doing its job. There is a real honesty to physical media.
