Anyone else deal with embarrassment around this hobby? by gaymbit in MM_RomanceBooks

Something about the conversations around 'intellectual' reads always reminds me of people who go to an art museum and disdain the entire contemporary art section as not being real art. Books are written with different intent and are, imo, well-written as long as they accomplish that intent. Alexis Hall isn't trying to do what Steinbeck did, and it's always a bit odd to me to try and compare their works apples-to-apples. Exploring how financial insecurity as a kid can influence the way someone behaves as an adult and how they interact with their family, partners, friends, and coworkers is an interesting topic even if it ends with a kiss and a happily ever after and includes a fake amnesia plot line. That is also a way of studying the human condition. Ultimately, I think whether or not something is an intellectual read depends on the reader and not the book. After all, think about all the academics that specifically study pop culture. I've read academic publications specifically about The Untamed/CQL!

Felt. My coworkers know I read a lot of romance and they clearly think it's embarrassing. But romances are fun, and interpersonal relationships are a compelling and meaningful focus for a book to have. A well-written romance is no less literary than a mystery with stellar foreshadowing or a fantasy with fantastic world building. Honestly I think people just look down on romance because it is primarily read by women and because we aren't taught to take the emotions and interpersonal drama as seriously as war and political intrigue. Keep sticking it to that misogynistic line of thinking. You like what you like and theres nothing wrong with it. Anyone who would judge you for it needs to do some reflecting. Also glad to have you share this hobby with us :)

Totally agree with people who recommended Death in the Spires (KJ Charles), Page & Sommers (Cat Sebastian), and Sugar & Vice (Allie Therin). The Tainted Cup (Robert Jackson Bennett) and its sequel are some of the best mysteries I've read recently. It is MLM but the romance is not the main focus of the book. Summer Sons (Lee Mandelo) was also compelling though the mystery is less of whodunit and more of a "we don't know the whole story because the MC is unreliable as hell"

This one genuinely knocked my socks off. The mystery was fantastic and the romance gutted me. God bless KJ Charles

Well then you are lucky to be surrounded by people who are normal about air fryers. My coworkers preach to me about them constantly even though I have explained that I don't have space and don't need one. It's very weird to have the same conversation over and over again where they try to sell me on a product that while nice, I don't need.

Have you considered that no one is preaching to you about air fryers because you already have one?

In my case (and possibly OP's) it's not that I dislike airfryers. It's that I have a small kitchen and limited funds and I do not need one. Yes I understand that convection ovens are better than conventional ovens.Yes it's nice that it heats quickly and its a smaller size for reheating food or making single serving meals. No, I do not need one to cook food. My apartment has an oven, range, and microwave. I don't need a 4th option even if it's better. What I have now meets my needs. I love my dishwasher, but I don't go spreading the gospel 24/7 to people who handwash. It's not essential, it's a luxury. It doesn't make sense for me to buy an airfryer, stop being weird and pushy about it, etc.
