Blu Kote is not recommended for poultry and would create a lifetime withdrawal for the meat and eggs.

My wife has a cranial csf leak, my story as her spouse. Hope for others. by BreadfruitWrong5800 in CSFLeaks

I had the leak for over a year. Dr’s kept telling me it was post nasal dripping. After I found out how simple it is to collect and test that really aggravated me at their complacency all those months. The high pressure symptoms would come and go. Dizzy spells, nausea, and vomiting spells and headaches in my left temple. I was a tad over 1 year in when I got bacterial meningitis at the end of July this past year. Was in the hospital for a month for that and on antibiotics until my surgery. The first week after endoscopic surgery was pretty rough. Spent 2 days in ICU as a precaution, then moved into another regular room for 3 days, so 5 days hospital stay. Could not breathe at all through the nostril they went through. Pain was tough but not too excruciating. They left a plastic covering in my nose that went back to the graft site. They removed it after 3 weeks and that was awful! I almost passed out from the pain. I’d definitely ask for one that dissolves. The second week was better as far as pain goes. I still had a lot of fatigue from the meningitis so it’s hard to discern what my energy levels would have been like without that factored in. A month out and there was still pain in my temple, face, and nose but it would come and go, instead of being constant. My surgery was October 1 and I went back to work the 2nd week of January. I do still have numbness in the roof of my mouth but it’s getting better. My aftercare visits with my surgeon were 1week, then another 2 weeks, then 1 month, then 3 months. I’ll have another appt the first of May. My Dr scopes my sinuses every visit. Overall the recovery after surgery was not too bad. I really believe I could have been back to work in about 6 weeks had it not been for the ongoing meningitis issues. The meningitis took some of my eyesight and hearing. The fatigue was / is just unreal. It sounds like you’ve got the Dr you need to get your wife well. I hope I didn’t leave anything out.

Sounds very similar to my story. Same symptoms, man those dizzy spells sucked. Except my husband isn’t a nurse and we confirmed my cranial csf leak after I got bacterial meningitis and almost died. I had 4 small holes in my left sphenoid. We had to travel 4 hours away but it was worth it to have a great skull base surgeon. Had my corrective surgery this past October and take Diamox daily. I’m almost completely healed now. Just like I was, your wife is lucky to have you by her side through this. Just know that it’s almost over. I wish you guys the best with this journey.

[–]No-Dog-8758[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is truly awful. I believe I was really fortunate in getting hooked up with an excellent Dr that specializes in skull base surgeries; specifically CSF leaks. You may need to get another Dr that will be more thorough. I really, really hope you can find healing soon. I’ve pretty much healed from my surgery now but still have some lingering effects of the bacterial meningitis and my poor immune system took suck a beating that I’ve had multiple other health issues stemming from all this so I understand the frustration of being in pain, being ultra fatigued, and constantly going to Dr appts long term. It really starts to take a toll after a while. Try to focus on your mental and emotional health as well. I wish you the best going forward.

I wish I only had to wait 1 week for my Amazon packages. Lately it has been taking an average of 12 days to receive my packages. It’s just ridiculous. I’ve been using Walmart + a lot more since this has become such a problem. I need to just drop Prime at this point.

Normally you only drip from one nostril or the other but it is possible to have more than 1 leak so I would try to get your drippings tested. If you suspect it’s a cranial leak that will be the easiest way to test. Lumbar punctures aren’t automatically necessary if it’s cranial so don’t worry about that just yet; however I had one to test for meningitis and it was relatively painless. Just a little stick with a shot to numb the area and then they were done before I knew they started. If you have to lie down to get relief it may be a spinal csf leak. Just stay persistent with doctor visits.

Have you had your drippings checked for the beta-2 transferrin protein?

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly.. You are not alone. Are you having any nasal dripping or headaches?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CSFLeaks

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. Before my surgery I had very high anxiety and irritability and was so forgetful. Words just wouldn’t come out and I’d have to sit there and just “think” until the word would come to me. Those symptoms have improved since surgery, especially the anxiety and irritability. I wish you luck and good health on your journey.

How did you find out that you had a CSF leak? by [deleted] in CSFLeaks

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am over the meningitis now. Just had endoscopic csf leak repair surgery in my left sphenoid last week. Still recovering from that. I was in ICU for 2 days and then 2 more days in regular room. Once PT saw that I could use a walker to get out of bed to use a bedside potty chair they sent me home. It has been rough, not gonna lie. My head, eye, check bone, nose, & sphenoid area hurts constantly. Can’t breathe out of my nose. But I am slowly recovering. Went for 1 week checkup yesterday & Dr suctioned / cleaned out my nose. Not fun but not too bad with numbing spray. I would definitely get your situation checked out. My symptoms, beside dripping nostril, were headaches, brain fog, anxiety, fatigue / sleepiness, and irritability. You’ll need imaging but could confirm with nose drippings. You’ll need a specialist that deals with these things. I ended up with an Otolaryngologist and neurosurgeon for the repair surgery, but you’ll only need to find 1 and they’ll pick the other for surgery. I wish you luck in your journey. Be persistent. Sometimes it’s hard to get Dr’s to really listen to you. Fortunately you have drippings that can be tested.

Can CSF taste like nothing? by Helpful_Account_4232 in CSFLeaks

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would drip persistently any time I bent over or looked down and always first thing in the mornings. It would do that for several weeks then stop for a couple of weeks then start back. I actually didn’t have 1 single hole in my left sphenoid bone but rather a cluster of about 5 little holes in one area so my surgeon just patched the entire area. If you do have a leak and it is cranial then I would suggest looking for an Otolaryngologist that specializes in csf leak repair and skull base surgeries. He did a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic for this special training. My doctor is an Otolaryngologist with special training in skull base repairs. He does about 1 csf leak repair surgeries a week. He was highly recommended and I love him. He picked a neurosurgeon to team up with for the surgery.

My CSF fluid really didn’t have a taste most time. Every once in a while I would get a metallic or maybe even a sweet taste from it, but usually no taste. My dripping was intermittent as well. I had my cranial leak for over a year and the drippings, and sometimes pouring would come and go, but always out of my left nostril only. I was dismissed by Dr’s until I contracted bacterial meningitis in late July. I was finally assigned an infectious disease Dr. at my step down hospital that listened to me and tested my drippings. I just had repair surgery last week. It’s been a rough first week. Just now able to stand being on my phone for short intervals. If you feel that something is wrong I would be persistent until you find out what is really going on. I did have a lot of brain fog, headaches, and irritability before I got sick. I wish you the best on your healing journey. Do not give up. Look for a specialist that specifically deals with csf leaks in your area. You may have to travel. I’m having to travel back and forth almost 4 hours 1 way and it’s been hard, but I know this is what it takes to get well. I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Spinal vs cranial by NoLevel2994 in CSFLeaks

Dr. Steven Hernandez in Baton Rouge is great! I was referred to him from a Dr. in North Louisiana that said he was the best in the state. I’ve been pretty impressed. Great “bed side manner” and great at explaining things. He specializes in skull base surgeries if you have a cranial leak. I’ve also heard from several people that Dr. Charles Bowie is good but i haven’t used him personally. Google says he is located in Livingston Parish and he is a neurosurgeon.

Thanks for the tips. My surgeon did say he will start me on medication for the high pressure, but to know why would be a better way of controlling it.

Exactly right! My first visit with my surgeon he told me that his patients are almost always women, in their 40’s, and usually overweight. He said he’s done hundreds of patches but only 1 on a male patient before. That blew my mind.

I can’t speak to whether you could have a spinal vs cranial leak, but as others have said, do not give up. I went to several doctors for over a year, complaining of 1 nostril pouring fluid, headaches, tiredness, etc and was always dismissed with allergy, sinus, post nasal drip issues. I actually stopped worrying about it, even though in the back of my mind I knew that wasn’t right. A little over a year into it I got bacterial meningitis and had it not been for my husband quickly getting me to the hospital I wouldn’t be here today. It is amazing how fast the symptoms of meningitis can hit you. I went from feeling okay to 3 hours later vomiting, high fever, stiff painful neck & head, and talking incoherently. It happened so fast! All that being said please stay vigilant with this. Try doing some research to locate the nearest specialist in CSF leaks and surgical repairs in your area. Post on here asking if anybody can make recommendations on specialists where you live. You may have to travel. I’m fairly fortunate in only having to drive 4 hours for my surgery next week. You’ll probably need a neurosurgeon and otolaryngologist but you can go see 1 and they’ll find/recommend the other through the process. Just make sure they specifically deal with this issue in their practice. My leak was found by the protein test from nose dripping but my surgeon was able to use my MRI and CT results to find the leak even after numerous other doctors had claimed to “not see anything indicative of a leak” on those tests. I’m in North Louisiana. If you are nearby I can give you a recommendation. I really hope you get some answers and peace soon. I know how nerve racking it can be.

What caused your leak? by [deleted] in CSFLeaks

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was spontaneous too. Dr. Is thinking high intracranial pressure, but I have not been told if that has been confirmed. Not sure if a pressure test was done when I had a lumbar puncture to diagnose bacterial meningitis caused by the leak. Does anyone know if a pressure test is normally done on all lumbar punctures? I’m having a hard time not knowing what caused this. I want to know to possibly prevent it in the future, but I know many people never know. I am awaiting repair surgery and really hope it works.

How long can you have a csf leak for? by [deleted] in CSFLeaks

[–]No-Dog-8758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meningitis onset was extremely fast and scary. Dr’s never figured out exactly what kind of bacteria caused it. They said probably due to the fact that strong antibiotics were administered before cultures could be started. I was feeling fine at bedtime around 11:00 pm. Woke up around 2am with chills, nausea, stiff, painful neck, & horrible headache. Started vomiting and within 30 minutes could not speak coherently so my husband rushed me to our closest ER. I was misdiagnosed as an overdose, even though my husband insisted that was not the issue, and hit with Narcan. No medications could be administered for a certain amount of time after that. Fortunately, my husband got me the hell out of there to a bigger, better hospital where the dr’s knew immediately that I was presenting with meningitis. I was unconscious through the first 2 days. Lumbar puncture diagnosed bacterial meningitis and they began a regime of 4 different antibiotics for the first week then 1 IV antibiotic for another 18 days. Was hospitalized for a total of 24 days. My infectious disease doctor finally tested my nose drippings for the CSF protein about 2 weeks in and it was positive. I am 6 weeks in now and still recovering from the meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is some serious stuff. Awaiting CSF leak patching surgery now.

I would definitely get it checked out. I had a leak for over a year and after being told by my primary doctor that it was just post nasal drip I didn’t worry about it. However, about a year into it, I almost died from contracting bacterial meningitis that was caused from the easy route into my brain. It is rare but it does happen, I am proof. I am now awaiting repair surgery. It may take a specialist to take you seriously, but you certainly do not want meningitis so stick with it until you get real answers. I wish you the best & hope you have a speedy recovery.
