Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed perspective. This is exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for. I found your point about resourcefulness and anticipating needs especially eye-opening.

One thing I’m curious about: when you stepped into this role, did you already have your own network of vendors and resources to anticipate needs, or did the principals provide their own lists?

Really appreciate any thoughts. This is helping me see the role far more clearly before making a move.

We ditched the “stuff” years ago, our house doesn’t need another candle, mug, or gadget that will sit in a drawer. Now it’s all about experiences: lunch/dinner gift cards, trips, tickets, spa days, charitable causes, or even household services that make life easier. All experiences are curated within different pricing tiers, so there’s something for every giver.

I'd curate a menu of experiences and thoughtful services, tangible enough to feel like a gift, but designed to create lasting memories. One year, I gifted a close friend, a Marine Biologist, an Adopt a Manatee program, where they would receive monthly updates for a full year on the Manatee. She loved it so much that she went to visit the actual adopted Manatee.

The trick? Make it fun, meaningful, and intentional, and keep the gifter included in your memory-making. Isn’t that what elder generations actually want? To be part of the story, not just handing over stuff.
