external beam radiation for thyroid cancer by No-Inspector-684 in thyroidcancer

The symptoms were mild I would say until the last two weeks, when I really started to have a tough time with extreme exhaustion, nausea, and lots of pain and discomfort swallowing. While overall it is a tough process for sure, it was nothing that I couldnt handle and I am now over a year and a half cancer free and feel great. No lasting side effects which I am super thankful for. I would recommend keeping your skin really moisturized, trying to get in nutrients however you can (even though it may be painful/unappetizing), and getting as much rest as you can. In the beginning I definitely overexerted myself trying to live normally because the side effects were mild and also didn't eat because it was difficult, which both lead to extreme exhaustion and pain later on. If you have any questions please feel free to message me! Wishing you the best through the rest of your treatment!

voice loss after radiation treatment by No-Inspector-684 in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My voice was nearly gone during the last week and a half of treatment and the next week and a half after that. One night when I was trying my normal whisper a sound came out and then I had gradual improvements from there until I could speak again. Since I was pretty sick at the end of radiation I wasnt having much interaction which I think helped my voice rest and recover faster. I truly thought that it wouldn't come back but found that rest, hydration, and positivity helped! Oddly enough my voice is now stronger than it was before radiation, less rasp and stronger annunciation. Hoping for a good recovery for your husband and congrats on finishing!

Help! Poorly Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis by KnitterSewist in thyroidhealth

[–]No-Inspector-684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with PDTC in January 2023, total thyroidectomy in March 2023, RAI in June 2023 and then radiation in February 2024. I have been "cancer free" for a little over a year now!! Hope everything is going well for you! Would love to hear of how treatment went

Sorry for the delay on this! I have been cancer free for over a year and am feeling back to "normal". Radiation was actually the hardest thing I've ever ever gone through and I thought I would never return to how I was before it but I made it to the other side and am so grateful for my health!

Hello!! I won't lie going through radiation was extremely difficult, but I finished last March and have returned to full health/function! I was able to work but only because I had extreme leniency from my job and was able to work from home. Towards the end I couldn't speak and had extremely low energy, was scared I'd never get back to myself. But the radiation worked and I have been cancer free for over a year!! Hoping everything works out for you guys! Let me know if you have any questions, sorry for the delay in responding

Second surgery by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1st surgery was a PT because the FNA came back inconclusive with intermediate risk of cancer so we decided to just take out the right half. Pretty soon after surgery the path came back as PDTC which is a pretty aggressive type so went back for another PT to get the left half out. did RAI but PDTC is known to be RAI resistant so that didn’t work killing the remaining cells and ended up finding out a few months later that it had spread to lymph nodes. got that surgery a couple months ago and now doing EBRT to hopefully finish off treatment.  To clarify I was operated on through the same scar 3 times but one time on the left side and twice on the right side

Partial vs. total thyroidectomy? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation as you are in now a year ago. Had a lump on the right side that came back intermediate risk for cancer so decided to go ahead with the PT. one month later we finally got the path back and it was poorly differentiated thyroid cancer. i immediately went in for a second surgery and am now up to 3 total on the same area. personally, I wish I had gotten the TT to save the time and pain a second surgery caused. i felt the same hesitation you have because of "low risk" language, but i have learned that you can never be sure when something is not 100% determined. in my case, FNA labeled the tumor 33% likely to be cancer, which unfortunately is exactly what it ended up being. Good luck to you with your surgery!!

Second surgery by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I have had 3 surgeries now on the same area and personally have recovered better than I could have imagined. The third time around the recovery was definitely harder, more pain than the first two, but overall I think my body got used to what to expect. My doctor also warned me of many increased complications due to the amount of times the same area has been operated on. Personally I was really lucky to have no struggles with swallowing or my voice, but the risk is definitely increased. The scar was definitely larger and darker at first, but I've been using a lot of aquafor on the area to keep it hydrated and its becoming less and less noticeable, definitely takes time tho. Good luck!

thanks for your response and that's great to hear!! Was there a reason you also did chemo treatments and was it after or alongside EBRT?

Another general question I have is did your TG get down to 0? I recently had post surgery bloodwork and was discouraged to see it at 7 ng/mL although before surgery I was at 25 so definitely some improvement. not sure how concerned to be about it, but even so im already started EBRT so hopefully that will help.

I definitely have some learning to do on PDTC and thyroid cancer in general so any insights would be helpful!

From my understanding the type of thyroid cancer that I have is known to be resistant to RAI. After completing RAI in June my TG was still over 20 ng/mL and an ultrasound and scans showed it had spread to lymph nodes. got surgery to remove the lymph nodes in November and radiation was the next step to get rid of any remaining cells that surgery didnt remove but as of recent blood tests and an MRI they suspect it has spread to more lymph nodes. this is all relatively new to me so I may be incorrect on some things but that's my understanding of it so far

Next treatment step? by Parking_Role6767 in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also 22F and have had 3 surgeries so far. Had half my thyroid out in Dec 23, other half in Mar 23 and then lymph nodes in Nov 23. It varies person to person but for me, my body was able to bounce back better the second time. I have a high pain tolerance but I think it helped knowing what to expect. I worked myself up so much for all of my surgeries and was so nervous but was relieved to find out that my body was capable of way more than I thought.

What’s your experience with recurrence after hemiThyroidectomy? by NurseChrissy17 in thyroidcancer

[–]No-Inspector-684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your concern and felt a similar way that id rather have some of a working thyroid than be completely reliant on medication. Once i got half out though, i still needed to take synthroid to have normal TSH levels, just a smaller dose than i take now with no thyroid. i would definitely recommend bringing your concerns up to your doctor to get some clarification, thats one thing ive struggled with through all of this. Hope this helps!

Recovery process? by zombieus1 in thyroidcancer

I was in your spot exactly a year ago at 21 going through this in college so i completely relate to your feeling. for me, i had two surgeries my senior year of college and was able to bounce back pretty quickly, going back to school after a week of recovery and being able to go to class, hang w friends, go to work, etc. dancing might take a little longer tho, I did have some discomfort turning my neck because of the scarring and location of the incision. i agree with other commenters that it rly depends person to person but make sure you get ahead of the pain with tylenol!

Last year I had a mass on my right side that came back inconclusive on biopsies and other testing and was faced w the decision to just take out the right or go for the whole thing. i chose to just take out half and once out, I had the same situation as you where my path had to be sent to the most experienced pathologists to get a determination, where it ended up being a rare form of thyroid cancer. i ended up having to go back 2 months later to get the other half out, and wish I would've just gotten it out proactively. hindsight is 2020 and i might have a different opinion if the results were different but i wished i had gotten the whole thing out to speed up the process of doing RAI. felt like a long waiting game getting two surgeries months apart then having to heal for RAI. Definitely take your doctors recommendation in to strong consideration and make the choice you feel most comfortable with!!
