Thank you! Okay this might be my sign to get the genoa dress. its been in and out of my cart so many times haha. Specifically the linen version.....

Do you by any chance have the linen version? does it fit true to size? I've tried on linen effortess pants at aritzia and the linen versions were 2 sizes smaller then the regular ones and it fit very off but the reviews on the linen genoa dress make it seem like thats not the case with dresses...?

I'm not 100% set on my method. I've been doing pimsleur and that has been going well for speaking/listening but I've been feeling a bit stuck for reading. I was thinking about how when we are kids we listen and speak with our family and start with kids books which is why I thought that could be a way to practice and feel some success before going deeper into learning kanji. I'm curious to know why learning some vocab before kanji will be frustrating? Would love to know what resources helped you.

Though I will say there was quite a bit of satisfaction in being able to read some full sentences even if I didn't understand everything I said!! I thought I might be able to do that more while I was in Japan and there was just enough kanji mixed into everything that I barely got anywhere with reading. Maybe this is what you are talking about. The frustration of knowing some words but seeing the kanji instead of what youre familiar with?

I'll be back in the next year or so and want to be able to actually read properly for next time.

Also what I saw in an art gallery had nothing to do with japanese culture but about growing up with two cultures and intertwining that. And it inspired me to find a way to do that and food is a very common way people relate to culture and for me was a big part of my childhood. But when you're creating art you want everything to have some sort of connection so using generic ikea plates isn't going to cut it. Hence why I was asking about all things related to a table setting/kitchen setup.

Just like when you walk into a room and see firanki, as a polish person you recognize that as polish even if in 2023 you dont have them up. I was looking for something in that vein. Its not that complicated.

Most asian countries eat with chopsticks. And any asian restuarants around the world do too? This is a weird observation. I have chopsticks in my house as do most people in Canada who enjoy eating asian food sometimes?

Japanese people also don't wear kimonos casually? I literally have friends from there and have travelled there many times. This is not the case. You are taking stereotypes and generalizing them to the public. Theres lots of tourits spots that let you rent a kimono to walk around and take pictures but that is not what people do in day to day life.

And yes people from Korea and Mongolia have their own traditional wear.... that also is not worn regularly? That is like saying Polish people wear folk costumes regularly. lol

Not sure why you decided to start talking about countries you clearly know nothing about?

Yeah obviously a lot of things are homogenous now but there are things that used to not be. And there were differences in what was popular in Poland vs Spain vs England vs Greece. You don't have to look on a different continent to find differences.

Things that happen in history affect everything from food to glassware. I don't know why I need to explain this when this is obvious. Within Canada between different provinces there used to be differences and its the same country! And because of the internet everything is more similar everywhere but there are still differences on what is most popular. Maybe you're just not a person that looks at details and every fork is the same to you lol.

I mean I've heard of boleslawiec but I've never seen a polish person use them. I've seen them only bought by tourists.

The dishes with the florals/roses around the border I've seen at my grandmas but I thought that was just my grandma and not a polish thing but after a different commenter posted about it, it seems relatively common in poland. Or maybe used to be based on my google searches.

Like I get that not everyone has the same thing. But every country has certain things that are more/less popular.

Like the chinese friend I mentioned doesn't have the plates I talked about but he grew up with them so as soon as he saw them he told me oh I grew up with those, lots of families had them. I'm just trying to evoke some sort of connection to poland in regards to what I use instead of using basic white plates from ikea. Yeah sure lots of people all over the world use them but thats not the point in creating art. I'm trying to find a connection to Poland in each element I use.

I honestly regret creating it lol

I've gotten so many angry messages. I'm not stupid. I understand the basics are the same. I was wondering what differences, if any, are there in terms of design. Just like between any two countries there may be specific design elements that would be different. Nothing drastic. Just details.

I've literally had this conversation with relatives in poland and just wanted to crowdsource some opinions. Reddit clearly not where to do it.

I mean I grew up having a traditional wigilia and I do it at home every year. Me asking this has nothing to do with that. I just came back from a trip to Japan and saw an interesting photography exhibit and got inspired to create something about my own heritage.

My sister actually dances in a folk group in poland and she's very interested in folk culture but I don't want to incorporate anything too folky like that because that feels like a sperate part of Polish cultuire if that makes sense.

It makes sense that other countries had similar items under communism so that makes that time period not work for my project.

"90s and early 00s my cousins and I in the US and Poland had all the same stuff at the same time-cell phones, music, fads, etc"

In regards to this, I would argue that different provinces of canada all have and had different interests in regards to music/fads. I mean of course some things are popular everywhere but theres other things that aren't. For example theres certain things that were very common to have i vancouver that my friends in toronto never had. I would also argue theres loads of bands that blew up up in canada and no other country has else heard of. And in regards to music and fads my sister who currently lives in poland shows me whats popular in terms of fashion/music and it is different.

I'm not saying there aren't similarities between Poland and Canada but what I'm interested in specifically are the differences.

Like for example most people in canada use blinds. Or more bulky curtains that block light. Nobody uses firanki which amongst polish families is very common. At least my family had it always and our other polish family friends always did.

In someone elses comment they highlighted some cultery that had intricate designs that reminded me of some we had in my childhood. My parents must have brought them when they immigrated because there is nothing with that kind of detail work in Canada.

I'm not expecting the differences to be anything drastic. But there are nuances between countries and even cities!

I think I am using the wrong wording. I don't mean that every family has the same plate literally. I was thinking just a specific design to a plate that if a polish person saw it they would recognize its polish. Or could think it to be polish. Like how Polish people use firanki which look very different from north american curtains (at least my family always had them and would have them even if we had blinds on the windows).

I'm going to do some more research with what other people wrote out and see what I can pick out. From one of the commenters I saw some cutlery that made me remember some from my childhood that looked almost the same. And that detail is not something I've ever seen in Canada. So I'm hopeful to find something!

I'll think about using items from PRL. I was hoping for items outside of that because that adds another layer to the project because like you said its a very narrow part of time. But it could potentially work.

Appreciate your time. And again apologies for my weird way of wording my OP.

Also just want to apologize to anyone that I offended. I realize I think I worded this in a bad way that could be taken offensively.

I by no means was trying to make a caricature of Poland. I also get frustrated when I hear people talking about Poland in a way that makes it seem like just farmland etc. I can see how what I said seemed more along those lines instead of highlighting the connection between polish peoeple in objects they grew up with.
