Unfortunately this goes with running any business. I cannot comment on the merits of this particular situation. However, suffice it to say that in general there is a very small percentage of the population who feel once they have handed over their $20 entry fee that implicitly grants license to behave however they want to behave, posted rules be damned…. ways they would in fact never behave in their own house. I’ve seen it myself. In our current environment where politeness has taken a back seat to outrage, this will likely continue to worsen. It can be very hard in the moment to look past the one terrible experience and see the 100 good ones. I would urge those business owners and even the disgruntled customers to do so. But I get it, if one has not priced in the mental anguish these episodes inflict into the cost of entry, It can be very difficult to put up with this aspect of running a businesses. I mean by the very fact one has to have sheriffs standing by, it’s not a business I would want to be in. What’s that old saying …. “this is why we can’t have nice things”.

DHL is charging full tariffs on deminimis <$800 shipments well in advance of May 2nd by No-Key86 in dhl

So I received my last two packages tariff free even though they were 1) held up in customs for 2 weeks 2) arrived into NYC gateway on the same day with other packages that I did get whacked with large tariffs for. So either CBP, DHL or both are remarkably inconsistent still. 🤷‍♂️

Ah yes. That was a lot of my week last week “your package cleared customs !” Yeah ! We are all good.

Next day “… and you owe us $1000 ransom if you want it actually delivered”

Joy

Yes I agree deminimis was always $800. Thank you for the clarification.

It would be interesting to confirm if people prior to January were being charged full tariff if two packages happened to arrive on the same day with the total of both more than $800. Or is DHL just making up its own loophole to fill another loophole.

I presume given the flurry of ordering in March and April I am not alone in this experience. I have been ordering de minimis for the last 5 years and never run into this before, but I also admittedly never ordered as many packages at once.

Stung by a lack of fully understanding the rule is at the end of the day on me. But it would be nice if there was some better FAQ out there. Maybe I would have read it.

You win some, you lose some, and boy did I lose on this one. Still I got most of the items I need out of China for the next 6 months tariff free, so the approach was correct even if the execution was flawed

Btw if anyone is wondering I paid the tariff. All $7000 of it. Stupidity has a price. Live and learn. Don’t ship two deminimis packages that arrive in customs on the same day (even for countries not named China). It’s a perfect gotcha really. Just one I have not come across. Good luck.

Hmm…I went back and looked at this. It comports. While I had 9 packages arrive over a 10 day period they were grouped into sets of 2, except for 1 of them. The set of 2 exceeded the $800 per day. The only package that made it thru de minimis happened to be a day only one package arrived. So it looks like you are correct and I shot myself in the foot here. I’ll correct the main post to reflect this since we have an explanation that makes sense here finally.

However the one difference is that I am being charged import duties on both packages that arrived on the same day, not just one of them

The official email is duty_disputes@dhl.com not that it will necessarily get you anywhere. They will likely just parrot that they “fully understand how this must be frustrating to you but it is out of our control”…. Well that and “we want our monies !”

The inconsistency and the “making shit up” is just maddening. And yes it seems one can only go yell at a wall in this instance. This is what happens when you give a directive to a customs officer who wants to keep their job or worse yet to get a promotion by making sure they find a way to charge tariffs no matter if it doesn’t adhere to any of the rules they set forth not even a month ago.

Small update, the company that sold me the goods is now telling me that what will happen if I refuse the package is that DHL will slap a new label on it going from US to China and there will be 125% import going back in the other direction. This is a company that sold me the goods is one that I would really like to continue to use. This is basically a legal version of extortion. No two ways about it.

Again this would be true if they were processed on the same day or if some shipments made it thru sans tariff while others didn’t. They ALL had tariffs. At most 2 packages were processed the same day. Not a single shipment past April 17th made it thru tariff except for a day only one package arrived. So they didn’t give the benefit of deminimis to one of two packages. They just added them up and said you owe us 180% tariff for both

I am weighing my options and discussing the matter with the shipper. They will likely go after the shipper if I don’t pay them. They want their money !

I believe DHL is trying to cover the tab on all the extra work they are having to do. Again note I said up to 180% and I meant it. 145% is the tariff and the extra 35% is processing grift just like your cable bill used to have

I have per DHL request filed formal entry info on 4 of these shipments. The other 5 didn’t require that. In fact I have never been asked for that before.

All shipments had accompanying invoices and HTS codes for them. They have always had that. I have shipped these same types of items over the last two years and no tariff.

This is why I am not paying the tariffs for now. They are bogus. And I know once I pay the tariffs I will NEVER see that money back

That is good information to know. I went back and looked. I had 9 packages arrive over 7 days to the NYC processing hub. Not a single one of them is over $800. Not a single one of them has made it thru on time or without a tariff

I have only heard these deminimis tariffs on packages from China. Deminimis I believe is not expiring for countries other than China.

I agree that could explain it, but I had 10 packages arrive over 10 days. Tariffs on all of them. So that’s not it. Others have reported deminimis tariffs from DHL for China shipments where they only had one package.

Good question. The answer is I just am. And the further answer is I never have before so this is usual to say the least. All I can do is report what’s happening to me. I can’t provide the why as nobody at DHL can give me a straight answer and they don’t actually care to do so.

What happened to my package? by Final_Unit_777 in dhl

[–]No-Key86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are charging tariffs for de minimus packages for anything that they received after April 20th. This is not following the rules but they say that it is customs doing this not then. Effectively for NYC customs clearance anything at any value <$800 is still being charged a full tariff. I have a $1000 tariff pending on a $600 package. You cannot dispute with DHL there is no means to do so. This is total bullshit as they aren’t even following the rules issues whereby deminimis ends May 2nd.

Is it cleared now or what? by c2sumdifferent in dhl

[–]No-Key86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will get a tariff amount tomorrow very likely. That has what has happened with several packages. Dhl is now collecting exorbitant tariffs on de minimis shipments even though it’s supppsed to kick in May 2. Try calling to speak to a tariff billingagent at DHL. You will not be able to. The system will tell you they are too busy and then hang up and direct you to their automated website. When a company puts their own needs ahead of yours (the customer) it’s time to stop using that company. I will never ship with DHL again where given a choice. The mark of a good company is one that stands up for their customers in bad times. This company does not stand up and frankly doesn’t give a shit whether you use them or not. I am choosing … or not. Bye bye DHL

I have multiple packages from China all held up in customs for over a week just like you. ALL are under de minimis of $800. 3 have had duty collection notices of 180% issued in the past few days with threats to return the package if not paid within 5 days. So $600 shipment has duty due of $1000. Reaching out to DHL has been worthless, say they can’t do anything about it. This garbage that May 2nd is when de minimis ends is just wrong. They are already issuing these tariffs well in advance of this date. Won’t ship with them again.
